Hardcastlemccormik posted:Yeah every software engineer who’s worked corporate for more than a year can tell you that getting a new manager is like a 70% chance you get a blustering idiot who doesn’t know how to code and you’re not sure how they ever got hired, they don’t understand the job or the product but they have some Extremely Important Ideas they need you to get right on top of, stat. And their deadlines are about 80% too short but if you tell them this they’ll write you up for underperforming. Yeah calling him an "elemental" of any kind oversells just how common and mundane his incompetence actually is. If Elmo's Daddy hadn't had a "safe so full of money we literally had trouble closing it" then Elon would be nothing more than a bland white noise poster here struggling to make ends meet at a call center, crying at YOSPOS bullying and convincing himself that the waitress does indeed like him. He's a rich failson who bought his way as far as he possibly could to get people to like him. Nothing more.

He's already doing the "these problems you speak of are not problems, but also they're already fixed by a thing we've just announced but isn't available yet" thing that Tesla's famous for. He really is the terrible manager who keeps his job because he'll harass anyone who tries to fire him.

"We're pleased that we squeezed free money from the 'richest' man on Earth and will continue to muddle along" would have been realistically the best outcome for everyone involved. This is a close second given the comedy but it'll be a little sad when the last person has to shut the lights off before they leave.

No, he's loving over Twitter because he's a moron. I believe he legitimately thinks he's doing his best, except his "best" is to be an enraged bull in a fine china shop and wondering why the value of his inventory has plummeted. He Dunning-Krugered himself into a scenario where his brand of moving fast and breaking things leaves a trail of broken things worth nothing.

Now imagine being so rich and insulated like Donny Dump Trump or Elmo "Emerald Mistary" Muskrat and never ever needing to grow out of it. All you have to do is keep on doubling down and you'll always find some toadies willing to suck you off. Really what says more about those guys than anything is that they have to insist on engaging with the public, which means that likely even their own socioeconomic peer groups of idiotically wealthy failsons can't loving stand 'em and their only instinct for making connections are with people who literally can't afford to tell them to get better.

The only thing that gives me pause is that Twitter's core usership is made up of enough plugged-in people in a wide enough array of industries to really raise a stink about this before/during their inevitable lockout, and it'd require competing figures to rally up behind Elmo. Shot in the dark, I'd guess that comes down to whether or not Elmo actually does have the liquidity to buy their loyalty. I could see it happening, I do think there's real truth to that being a possible dark avenue, and people should be ready to offer up meaningful road blocks to keep it from happening.

That’s basically the difference between junior and senior engineers. Junior engineers think through rapid refactoring and high code quality and careful algorithm selection, they can fix anything. The senior engineer knows that the code nobody has touched in a decade produces 7 figures a year in revenue so you don’t loving touch it unless there’s a security issue or the business says you need to. After decades of experience you just know nothing is ever as simple as it looks.

Also people vastly, vastly overestimates the reach Twitter has. Everyone had an AM radio, and the level of engagement was as simple as flipping a switch and leaving it running in the background. The number of people logging in to engage on the network is multiple orders of magnitude lower, and they already tend to run in their own circles. If Musk turns it into Truth Social Lite, then it dies faster because those dirty libs will leave, and the conservatives will leave because the point is to try to own the libs and if they're not there why bother?

Plan R posted:Grain of salt and all -- lol, twitter's userbase would need to be greatly scaled back for that to happen. Turning the site into that will be expensive to maintain, and the only companies willing to advertise on it will be very shady. There is also the issue that credit card companies don't like doing payments to porn sites because there are a lot of chargebacks. Pornhub is only worth around $1.5 billion, and its the largest porn site. It'd also probably get banned from the apple store if that happened.

Yeah people really overestimate internet apps when comparing them to AM radios and transistor radios and poo poo. My dad saved up money to build a transistor radio kit when he was a paperboy so he could listen to his own personal radio, on the FM band even! Twitter is not like that, never was, and never will be.
