I think the 1918 angle misses that the Hundred Days knocked Germany out of the war when they still had hopes for a more favourable peace of some sort. They had previously been able to force Serbia and Romania to quit the war in genuinely brilliant campaigns. In Italy, I have no idea how the Italian government didn’t collapse after Caporetto, that may be an other example of the resilience of modern armies even led by inept states. Operation Michael might have won the war in 1914, but by 1918 there were just far too many Entente soldiers in France for it to have a hope. It was too far to go and the Entente could make good their losses with Americans. The Germans had a lot of fight in them, which led in part to the Dolchstosslegende

All of that to say, I don’t doubt they could have slowly withdrawn to Germany, as they had done in the withdrawal to the Hindenburg line and later withdrawal behind it. It’s just that the Entente was willing to suffer a million casualties in the Hundred Days to win the war.

Ukraine is certainly willing to suffer a million casualties here, no matter how well they fight at the tactical level, Russia is not.

e: I think I’m mostly agreeing with you, it’s just people have this idea the Great War ended with a wimper and not with a bang.

In the case of the entente, they could always call upon more American cannon fodder and while the German army was far from broken there simply were in an impossible strategic position. As you mentioned, the Kiel mutiny meant the High Seas Fleet was out of action and the Ottomans/Austrians were dead weight (the Austrians in particular had overextended themselves in Italy). Also, the allies took a million causalities but the Germans took 1.3 considering caputred soldiers and by the Armistice were at a 2:1 disadvantage. Obviously they could still back themselves to the Rhine, but yeah, they would simply put themselves in a worse post-war position.

the US saying negotiations after Kherson are possible is a lie? say it ain't so

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/11/11/how-far-are-negotiations-between-russia-and-ukraine

quote:

But experts have said the prospect of meaningful talks remains distant. Ukraine, they say, will seek to achieve more battlefield gains before heading to the negotiating table, while Russia hopes the impact of winter on Ukraine’s allies will fracture international support for Kyiv and weaken its resolve.

“It makes sense to wait for now – Ukrainian forces now have momentum, they are advancing further in Kherson and that progress is going to set the stage and conditions for any discussion,” said William Taylor, a US former ambassador to Ukraine and vice president at the US Institute of Peace

[...]

It’s too soon to speak about negotiations as both sides have too much to gain or to lose, said security expert at the European Council on Foreign Relations Rafael Loss.

[...]

“Once winter is gone then there will be a re-assessment of the situation.”

oh.... joes got some hidden messages about attacking crimea being a bridge too far 🤤😂

Ukraine’s southern region connects the mainland to Russian-annexed Crimea. The small isthmus linking the peninsula to Ukraine has turned into a key land corridor used to supply Russian troops.

“If Ukraine breaks through and captures not just the city, but the province of Kherson east of the Dnieper River, the hidden message of the [US President Joe] Biden administration is that they should stop and accept a ceasefire,” Lieven said.

quote:

“There are strong indications that if Ukraine tries to take Crimea, then Russia’s use of nuclear weapons is very high – through a ladder of escalations,” he said.

Pifer disagreed, arguing that the US would support Ukraine trying to drive out an invading force.

[...]

“I also don’t think the US is saying don’t do things due to nuclear concerns. The threat of nuclear weapons is serious, Putin does not back down, but also Putin does want a nuclear war,” Pifer added.

Kyiv will also need to consider its domestic context. After months of war and suffering, more than 85 percent of Ukrainians insist their nation should keep fighting rather than negotiating, a recent survey indicated.

I would augment, is more that leftism was extinguished, and in its place there were a series of placeholders put in place to act as a buffer to capture future resentment. At a certain point by the 1970s, perhaps even if the Communist Party was self-moderating itself, why not just throw in the towel?

Admittedly, if your enemy is signalling weakness, why not keep pushing? The US is only going to stop if the Russians actually signal they would take action, but they don't seem to be.

USIP’s cover story sounds really funny

quote:

Spurred by a grassroots movement in the 1970s and 1980s,[citation needed] Senator Jennings Randolph joined senators Mark Hatfield and Spark Matsunaga and Representative Dan Glickman in an effort to form a national peace academy akin to the national military academies.[8] The 1984 act creating USIP followed from a 1981 recommendation of a commission formed to examine the peace academy issue appointed by President Jimmy Carter and chaired by Matsunaga.

the general idea of a department of peace has been around for a while apparently https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Department_of_Peace

quote:

The Peace Alliance[9] and the Student Peace Alliance[10] organizations support the creation of a U.S. Department of Peace. Both are national nonprofit organizations and independent grassroots political movements that operate autonomously. The ongoing movement is supported by several members of Congress, the late former CBS Evening News anchor Walter Cronkite and author Marianne Williamson. Also joining the increasing list of national endorsements are Yoko Ono, Joaquin Phoenix, Frances Fisher and Willie Nelson.
