https://twitter.com/mtgaaron/status/1590170452764528641

If your "churn" format is on the decline, and people are moving more and more to eternal formats where they don't need to replace cards as often, that's going to show up on your bottom line sooner or later. Maybe WotC thinks that they're able to replace a lot of that business by targeting stuff like Secret Lairs or Commander products to players who just need a few dozen cards every year, but the decline of Standard does mean they have a hole they're going to need to fill.

hipstersofthecoast wrote about the actual report. apparently their source is they looked at _collector boxes_ on TCG, and then maybe went to the 2 closest targets near the BofA building in Manhattan, with one of them being a Target Grocery vs an entire Target Retail Store.

the writer also cites the fact that the report ignores Arena completely, instead focusing on secondary market conditions, which WOTC should technically not care about in terms of their own bottomline.

one thing i disagree about though is hipsters writes that WOTC should be printing more if they're trying to grow out their userbase and not worry about investors. But I'd argue overprinting the demands of your userbasefor a product is not really good for the health of the game either.

edit: oh yeah the report also completely ignores amazon

Target also technically doesn't even stock MTG. They contract that TCG stuff out. I don't recall the names but there's pretty much just two companies that run all that for big box.

yeah i think the report pointed out that no one was buying it (they have pictures) and that the stock was over a year old.

i'm at work right now on a busy day so i can't read into their reports and i speed read through the hotc article too. i want to read it when i get home though

Skimming through it they also cited Costco not calling out Toys as best performing non-food category since January (it's been #1-2 all year until October now it's 5th or less).

Also they mentioned people mad about foils curling. You've been heard, Magic thread!!

I wonder how their financials compare to MTG stuff overall. I presume MTG is the bigger game, but then again I know way more people, at least fighting game people, that grew up and still play YGO then magic

I might not be reading this correctly, but the claim being made is that national retailers are either a) not carrying Magic at all or b) they are having so much trouble moving Magic product that sets that came out over a year ago are still available, indicative either of overprinting or lack of demand. But then, again if I’m reading this correctly, the evidence to support this claim is that the author visited two Target stores in New York City (of all places).

Wouldn't a Target in NYC have more movement due to higher population meaning a Target out in the sticks would be holding onto some really old stock if at all?

It Was All A Dream
It’s actually inaccurate in the opposite direction - because New York consumers don’t use stores like target the same way they do in parts of the country with a more even population density. The result is less retail goods being bought and carried home and more being delivered direct to door step

there was more to his argument but he's saying the analyst only looked at the 2 nearest targets, one of which isn't really a target you go to for magic. but besides that people don't necessarily buy magic from big box stores only and using 2 stores to project onto the health of the game doesn't seem robust.

In New York City, of all places, which is about an atypical location as you can get and completely insane to extrapolate into nationwide trends.

Edit:The island of Manhattan has a population of 1.694 million people, and is 22.83 square miles. The United States is 3.79 million square miles, so therefore, the total population of America is 281.7 billion.
