the milk machine posted:i don't know if it's the same issue, but recently i've been having an issue where when a show ends and goes to the next episode, there's no sound. it's fixed by backing out and hitting play on the ep again. Experiencing this as well. AppleTV connected to a receiver, Plex running on Ubuntu via Docker. At first I thought it was specific to some content my kid was watching before catching it happen with stuff that never had issues during repeated watches. Heavily suspect it's the AppleTV client because of that.

I have some spare hardware (CPU, mobo, ram) that is better than my current Plex PC that I was planning to upgrade with. Since I'm going to be doing a fresh install of windows too what's general process I should follow to set up this new server? Should I just follow the Plex guide for moving servers or just start a new server on the fresh install of windows? Would I have to reinvite my friends and family that are using the server or would I just grant them access to this new server through the access options menu?

Why windows? And it is possible, although a pain to transfer your database and settings.

Any of you running Plex on Linux have an issue with the /dev/dri directory just disappearing until a reboot? This is an 8th gen Intel on debian. I just want reliable quick sync.

If the system is not populating /dev/dri/ as you expect it to be it implies the OS (kernel) had some issue loading the GPU drivers. So check journalctl for any error from your GPU kernel module. This is all probably a better question for the Linux thread btw.

But at this point by having it running as a windows machine my roommates have been using it for minor work/web browsing, has a printer that's is connected to it/shared on the network, and the physical PC lives in the common room. So by being a OS that people know how to use it's been doing extra work other than as a Plex server. The worse one was the one that tricked you into upgrading to 11 without you wanting it. So now my workplace is split between two OS', just what I wanted to support! Luckily my work machine isn't considered modern enough despite not being that old so I'm "stuck" with 10, oh dear.

Here's something completely useless but might be a 'oh that's interesting, I guess' to someone. If you use the DVR on a HDHR or similar device and turn on the 'detect commercials and add skip marks', it generates a neat little log file in the folder with all the info in it The ASCII art it brings up at the top is it working out the channel branding to watch for - in this case Channel 10 WPLG code:

No need to reinvite. The process was pretty easy and only took me like an hour.

Plex usually has a decent Black Friday sale, right? Been commuting to work on the train again after 2 1/2 years and would love the ability to easily download shows on my Plex server. Streaming over cellular isn’t cutting it.

Plex downloads are 100% unreliable in my experience, even if you manage to get the sync to start and finish, sometimes the content you have just.. vanishes or otherwise throws a cryptic error.

Okay, good advice. I just assumed it worked like every other streaming app that lets you download stuff. I am on Apple devices through if that matters. I'll sign up for a month today and give it a go.

I am also an apple ecosystem person. My solution to the sync problem has been to just do it manually, for TV shows I go to the directory and do a loop over the seasons I want to take and then just drop em in icloud or sync them in finder. For movies I wouldn't loop, just do 1-offs.pre:for name in $(find ./ -name *.mkv); do ffmpeg -i "$name" -vcodec h264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -s 960x540 -crf 30 -acodec aac -ab 96k -tag:v hvc1 ~/out/"${name%.*}.mp4"; done

The download/sync system they implemented originally was always broken and a complete coin toss as to whether it worked or not. After several years they scratched all the code and implemented a more simplified one with less features to ensure it worked more consistently. The new one is just as broken as the old one.

I just wanted the convenience of being able to add something to do it with the click of a button when I was at work to load up something on the ride home. But if it's glitchy like people say it is, I might just have to plan more about what I watch and load stuff up in advance.

I could never get the downloads to work when the server was running on my Synology NAS but moving it to an old compact workstation I grabbed from ebay has everything behaving like a dream.

I finally paid for Plex Pass myself after also waiting years, specifically because of the mediocre experience people had with downloads, but I wanted to try PlexAmp and I've certainly gotten my ~$80 worth of use out of Plex over the years. Sure enough, downloads did not work for me. Spent some time looking through various threads and trying stuff with no luck, but then it started working randomly last night. I'm not even sure what I did. Fingers crossed that it continues working.. PlexAmp is great, but sadly I've had zero luck getting it to sync iTunes rating data and playlists, which kind of limits how much use it is to me right now. Hopefully I can figure that out as well. There's no way to playback video content at > 1.0x speed is there? That's one thing I've really enjoyed doing in VLC when trying to get through content quickly.

Hadn't found one yet, but haven't looked hard. I would want basically an HTPC case with a screen on it, not something that looked like your typical "raspberry pi touchscreen + case" maker contraption.

Not sure how feasible it would be to do with PlexAmp, but I used to use a cheap phone/tablet with a 1/8" out plugged in to speakers with Spotify as the remote control. Worked fairly well and I don't see why it wouldn't work with PlexAmp. I guess it just depends on how highly integrated you want it to be?

Yeah I’m a big PlexAmp fan too, I use it because I exceeded the 100k song limit in iTunes Match ages ago and it made sense to try. Use it constantly now. I like the idea of a dedicated PlexAmp box. I’ve always liked that Sony network player than Techmoan has, feel like that could be recreated pretty closely (and way cheaper).

I'm on Android, which probably matters. I was unable to get Netflix downloads to work on my employer-provided iPad. Seems like you have to keep the app in the foreground and the device unlocked? LOL.
