I don't think that's much disputed now given how many people are super into PSP emulation. Hell I think the PSP outsold the GBA.

Some leaked old videotapes from the Nintendo QA department demonstrating bugs and crashes and stuff for developers to reproduce and fix. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEy0UuenpJg Nothing incredible since it's all nigh-final builds - about the only previously-unseen thing is a character select pose in Smash Bros. Melee - but a kind of interesting peek behind the curtain. And an interesting reminder that even with all the advances in tech over the years, some disciplines like QA really haven't changed much. Well, okay, they probably use Shadowplay instead of VCRs now. Well, I hope they do, at least...

Whenever we heard you could make a character/level or whatever for some future thing it was always "I'm gonna make this thing that does this and this and this" that was all just impossible poo poo. You're actually missing something bigger here that would cause a pretty massive timeline tangent all on its own; If the PSX never exists, that means no DualShock controller. The template for all controllers after it.

Vord posted:But the dualshock is just a snes controller with two more buttons and analog sticks You're ignoring just how many weird shots in the dark there were for controllers in the early/mid 90's. The DualShock lead to the Xbox controller as well as the DS2, and pretty much wiped out any kind of alternate controller design completely.

The Saturn with the NiGHTS controller basically set up that controller scheme, but with only one analog stick.

Vord posted:But the dualshock is just a snes controller with two more buttons and analog sticks Tis just a step in the ever evolving trends, 2 analog sticks was a huge stepforward but both its lauded features, analog sticks and rumble, were nicked from the N64 controller and doubled. If nintendo anounced a controller that punched you in the face sony would immediately start working on one that kicks you in the balls. Xbox controller obviously ripped off the dreamcast too, same face button placement.

Hell, all you have to do is look at Nintendo's controller designs from the N64 to Wii classic controller to see how a company can come to using analog dual sticks on their controllers without "stealing" from Sony. N64 "Hey, what if we design our console with an analog stick?" ][ V GameCube "The analog stick was cool, but we can get all of this into one controller if we make the C buttons a digital stick and move the Z button to the shoulder" ][ V Wii classic controller "Wait, gently caress, we need a second analog stick for Waveracer 64"

Mr Phillby posted:I also don't think its fair to call it the template for all other controllers when most others don't replicate its weird legacy left stick placement. Its there because thats where there was room to put it on the OG PS controller, just like the N64 its a design that prioritises the D-Pad over the new fangled sticks, only sony stuck with that placement forever for some reason. Dualshock has the superior left stick placement

Neddy Seagoon posted:You're actually missing something bigger here that would cause a pretty massive timeline tangent all on its own; In the alternate timeline the Nintendo Playstation would have eaten up development time and resources delaying or outright cancelling the VB and Nintendo would have taken ideas from it for their next console, like the controller. And so today all controllers would be descendants of the VB controller and we'd have 2 dpads (the c buttons on the N64 controller were close, so it's not a stretch) But also 2 analog sticks too, we may be all sticks and dpads by now. Also Gunpei Yokoi would still be alive because he wouldn't have been fired and would have been chilling in his office at Nintendo designing a 3d Mario land game instead of in that car. Since Nintendo never got burned on the VB they'd have released the Oculus headsets and there'd be no meta. The GameCube would have been a much better console and Zuck would have been playing games instead of inventing Facebook and so he'd just be some guy and your grandparents would be on myspace instead. This would end up worse for society because foreign influence campaigns would be a lot more extreme with the ability to just embed html into your profile, leading to botnet personhood getting passed in the mid 2000s and the first botnet president in 2016. NTSC 240p sticks around as the US TV standard, since Nintendo hates upgrading their graphics chips & is a dominant force on the TV industry due to their console popularity. OTA analog TV never got kicked off the airwaves in 2009 and is still available. Cable TV is also still analog, and scrambled porn is still a thing.
