I'm so happy the set code is BRO it makes every comment about it sound like breathless excitement

I opened 8 set booster packs for BRO from a box that showed up to my house on Saturday (isn't this set supposed launch in paper this Friday?). No "wow" cards in the regular rare or old-border artifact slots, but did pull regular Megatron, Starscream, and Prowl (ACAB). I'm sure that is just wacky chance in the distribution, but interesting nonetheless.

Did anyone else's LGS give out set boosters as prizes at the prerelease? What am I supposed to do with them open them like some addicted chimpanzee? At least if you did well enough before you and your friends could draft before release.

Set boosters are for opening, yeah. I guess you could play flip+rip with them

Set boosters are what my store gives out, but they thankfully allow you to take store credit instead of packs as your prize. Yeah, set boosters aren't really good for drafting or sealed.

LGS I go to doesn't let us use store credit on boxes or draft entries. Draft wins are usually a choice of any in-stock standard legal packs or 4$/win store credit. I usually just grab packs I haven't opened any or many of before.

hell yeah, the only "jackpot" lottery card I've ever opened before was opening a single box of amonkhet and getting a force of will invocation, and that was a while ago. just pulled this guy: seems they're insanely rare, only one up on tcgplayer for a cool grand, but I'm sure the market is entirely unsure at the moment due to the sheer lack of quantity available.

Did my first prerelease since Coldsnap last night. Was fun to get back to it, despite BRO being awful for sealed. Looking forward to the next one. Seems like draft may be high powered fun, since it'll have more balanced decks.

The foil shattered glass transformer cards are about as rare as the neon inks from kamaigawa. https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/feature/whats-inside-the-brothers-war-boosters

pure rarity is a weird price multiplier, there are currently twice as many textured foil Wren and Six than etched foil Abzhan Ascendancies on the market, and the prices couldn't be more different

I know the playtest mystery booster convention cards aren't "legally" constructed playable, but I can't be the only one who sees things like acorn symbol, silver borders, "not for constructed play" labels as an invitation? The commander playgroups I play with are fine with acorn cards, it's more like hyper cEDH or whatever folks don't run except in specific pod for that sorta thing. Some of the playtest cards are extremely broken so wouldn't want to mess with those, but others seem just like janky cards of a normal power level. If nothing else all my kitchen table decks so far are already unfinity-based and a playtest kitchen table deck could also be fun. Any of y'all ever make a deck or play with/against these cards outside of a draft? I haven't really browsed through them all yet, just saw the secret lair convention bundle thing and looked through a little handful of em

Mine is probably going to be a dice rolling durdler with gate lands. There's also a bug circus deck with Jermane and a goblin tribal deck with Space Family Goblinson in the group.

I heavily considered a bunch of the mystery convention cards for a vintage cube but the playgroup decided against it as it changes the basics of gameplay too much. Impatient iguana would be so good but hard to know just how strong it is and changing start order feels a little outside of what folks want with cube

Because they can make you spend more money on the stuff you want, while still using the store credit eventually. Maybe there is another incentive but I think this is the simplest explanation in a capitalist system

Instead, they're periodically cashing it out on singles or whatever but you're still getting their entry fee for your events But I've never even worked at a game store, let alone owned one

There is no good reason , only many bad reasons. It helps the store move product they have a harder time selling as well as probably have people spend less store credit overall, which is free money to them.

You (should?) know this. Limiting store credit use to singles and snacks is just good business because it means you end up paying less to cash in your players' winnings. You want to sell your high margin products as much as possible. Our store doesn't let you use store credit to buy into tournaments either, gotta spend fresh cash which is fine by me. Gotta keep the lights on somehow. Katana Gomai fucked around with this message at 22:31 on Nov 17, 2022 |
