lucas star wars was iterative, at least. Not going to defend the prequels because that's just contrarian nonsense those are bad movies, but he did make it a point to like, pull from pulp stories, serials, and other garbage, and iterated on it. Most of the time it was bad, but it was novel, and good special effects were still an effective coat of paint over an otherwise bad movie.

the tentpole disney stuff is self-consuming. It's an ouroboros, coprophagia, and completely creatively derelict, and that's why it's bad. it's a different, worse kind of bad where there's a fixed and sealed canon of aesthetics, ideas, and plotlines and it just recycles them endlessly. If they make X-XII star wars movies they'll be the exact same poo poo.

Apple's Foundation was very dumb, but it took a few decent swings, and I'd be interested in watching more. It was clearly a troubled production, and it's not really anything but a loose adaptation of the source material, but the latter didn't bother me.

Did it swing as big or as dumb as Raised By Wolves? No. But basically nothing does.

(not socialist)

Re: The Sequel Trilogy. Yes they were crap -- I think coprophagic was a good description -- but I stand by the middle one at least clearly trying. The aftermath from the rammed spaceship was the single most interesting image Star Wars has produced in a very long time, perhaps since the iconography of the original trilogy. And it wouldn't be the first time a good director went to work for Disney -- particularly current Disney -- and had their work savaged in the edit.

That Andor has, for instance, legible action sequences is astonishing to me.

Do not trust in hope- it will betray you! Only faith and hatred sustain.

Trash is strong but it's done in 3 episode arcs (except 7 as an interlude) and ep3 is when ot goes from setting up pieces to actually having things happen

Yeah, there was plenty of criticism of Whedon before it was made official. The material he produced plus his "feminism" made it pretty easy for people to recognize exactly what type of guy he was.

if one of my film friends came up to me and said "I have a really hosed up kink, I worry about it leaking into my writing" I'd think theyre an idiot. write what you know. the screen is a fantasy space. if only for the spectacle.

I'm seriously balking at the accusations levied. whedon's writing sucks but strong female character is an excellent fetish to harness

a fetish as a literary device seems okay, but constantly inserting the author's fetish is weird imo
