At work, there was a ticket about updating the addresses you can stream video to using one of our products, since apparently the stream URLs have changed out from under us. Anyway, apparently Twitter has live streaming? But, also, it was nice to be able to say "ha, no, don't even waste time to see what the new ones are". Also, I think it's interesting that, in this particular situation, Musky's bullying and general tin-pot-dictator attitude towards his staff falls down. I can see how it would work at SpaceX, because hordes of engineers would just jump at the chance to get to make space rockets, and I can imagine something similar for people who want to make electric cars. That would make it easy for him to threaten people, if they're easily replaceable. But software engineers? Lmao, we're very much in demand, in absolutely all industries apart from videogames, which has been a nightmare factory for over thirty years with no end in sight. Anyway, my point is, I feel like this is the first time Musky has been in charge of people who aren't easily replaceable and therefore easily bullied. Nobody is absolutely dying to work on a social media site and has devoted their entire career trajectory towards skills that apply there and nowhere else. The job market has stayed excellent for software folks for decades, and on top of that I feel like anyone who helped run one of the biggest sites on the internet could practically name their price. The specific skills they would have gained experience in are incredibly transferable to other jobs! Threatening to fire people only works if they actually need you and your job, and couldn't easily get a decent job within a month or so. Hyperlynx has a new favorite as of 11:17 on Nov 18, 2022 |
