He's the guy who sold his Ferrari. And according to K&R's statement he's one of the people who screwed them over, but it seems he got screwed over as well immediately after.

Also, apparently he was tried and acquitted for writing child pornography because he wrote a super-edgelord-y explicit horror novella about someone abusing women and children:

https://lefteast.org/transgression-as-ends-and-mean/

quote:

Early last year the Estonian writer and controversial public figure Kaur Kender was formally charged with production of child pornography. The charges related to a novella Kender penned in the winter of 2014 entitled Untitled 12, which depicts the violent sexual abuse of women and children by an unnamed protagonist. The persecution of the novella’s author has ensured that it has achieved an infamy incommensurate with its literary worth.

Kender’s trial began in May in Tallinn. At the request of the prosecutor, Lea Pähkel, the trial has been partially closed ‘for reasons of public morality’ but Kender has made a point of publishing the court proceedings on his online portal Nihilist.fm (the same portal on which he initially published Untitled 12). The controversy was stoked further in June when the court ordered Kender to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

The prosecution of a well-known writer has provoked outrage among much of the Estonian literary scene, with prominent intellectuals rushing, if not to support Kender, then to at least oppose the state’s persecution of him. Both the trial and psychiatric evaluation have had many critics pointing to the disturbing historical parallels of the twentieth century, with which Estonia is intimately familiar.

Kender himself has been confused in his response to the charges. At times he has reveled in his provocative role and described himself as ‘the Estonian De Sade.’ At other times he has backed off from this controversy, insisting that there is nothing offensive about the work and that it is merely a social satire. He has even suggested that his prosecution is an act of vengeance by the ruling Reform Party for his role in publicizing the social epidemic of drug abuse in Estonia.

Estonians, huh.

Hello! I finally started playing this game. It's pretty great so far although I really really really hate having 20+ quests going on at the same time. One of my biggest RPG pet peeves. It's so overwhelming for me.

Anyway, I'm being very careful reading this thread because this is a game that I actually don't want spoiled. Usually I don't care as much but the fact that you start off the game knowing absolutely nothing is pretty brilliant and gives me motivation to discover things.

Ok so I have a problem. It's about 9:30pm on day one and I still can't inspect the body. I've failed 3 times and the last time I had a 92% chance. I've already added one point to endurance and now I plan on adding another one just to try again. I also finished that thought processes that gives you a boost. I feel that's 2 wasted points because that's a skill I don't care about. And it's hard to get skill points.

So did I gently caress something up or does this just happen sometimes?

it just happens, roll with it

also it's not easy to do but you don't even need to examine the body to beat the game

this is not what I wanted
I didn't get the body out of the tree until day 3. You're fine, having to come back to skill checks later on is normal, and there's (eventually) enough xp going around that you shouldn't feel bad "wasting" it on stats you normally aren't into

Sounds like you just got unlucky and rolled double 1's which is always a fail. I've never failed that check more than once but you might be able to grab another thing of ammonia from the Fritte shop if you have money. Endurance isn't a bad skill to throw points into though since you get health from that. Might be worth wandering around to see if there is another way to open that check up.

Yeah one of the ongoing themes in DE is that you are a fuckup who is meant to keep on loving up until he gets his poo poo together as he solves the case (or, alternatively, actively blow his poo poo apart and become even more of a gently caress up as he solves the case). It's expected for you to roll with your failures. Save often if you have low health or low morale builds because there's some bullshit that will kill you and end the game (one of its flaws), but it's a better experience if you don't quickload outside of a game-ending fail state. There's almost always another path, and it's specifically one that you might not have found if you'd rolled a successful check.

Ok well that's good news. However I have a bigger problem right now. I'm as far as I can get (afaik) on all of my quests and it is 21:35 on day one and I can't figure a way to progress time. I didn't buy any books because I never had to pass time before.

I have no idea what to do right now.

There are a lot of places to go and people to talk to. Something to consider is that you can talk to some people up on balconies even if you can't walk to them.

Also you should probably have found a clipboard full of stuff to read.

I would suggest running a few manual saves regardless though.

Oh I got it. I just cycled through people selling things that I didn't go all through yet. Hopefully this will get me into the next day.

Thanks everyone!

I don't have a clipboard yet. I have a ledger but I keep failing the check on it. I've gone through everything else I could in there.

The most stressful part of the game is the first day because there’s so much happening and it does initially feel like you have to get the body down right away. The moment you realize that it isn’t true (in fact there’s an achievement for never even interacting with the body once) everything falls into place

This game is insane. I had my first game ending. Despite all of my skills telling me not to, I read the letter in the ledger.

That really sucks but god drat. That was amazing.

Weird. I got the main logo on the screen with a gnarly death thing in the back and couldn't do anything but start a new game. I read something about them recently adding that because you can die early.

edit: I read the letter and the end thing was "fall over sideways." So I did. And then got that screen.

It’s possible to take morale damage when reading parts of the ledger, but there is also an intentional fade to black. If the game took you to the main screen I’m sure it was the former.

I'm always surprised at how many people don't notice that the Ancient Reptilian Brain says entirely different things after the 'Begin' button from passing out.

To clarify. If you didn't hit the main menu, or assign fresh stats it's not a new game. But I haven't done that bit in a while, especially in Final Cut, so maybe it did make you do that.

If you really care, all Game Overs (that I recall) are denoted by Newspaper article splashscreens.

That bit almost got me too.

If you only had 1 morale, it was probably a legit game over. If not, the logo screen fades to black after a bit and the rest of the game continues

interestingly the VAs used different words for f*****t - the narrator said human being, but titus said fucktard
