How is it Elon’s revolution when he had to be forced by court order to do it? Shouldn’t the judge for the lawsuit get the credit?

I don't disagree with any of this, but I think your failure scenarios are more likely if the system's expected to just coast. I'd say rolling out some new feature and loving up a database migration (possibly irreparably), deploying breaking changes in a wrong order, or not keeping the twisted requirements of some opaque piece of code invariant are far more likely failure scenarios. They've already shown they're dismantling reviews and safeguards allowing dev builds to make it into production.

Oh absolutely, that will be a hilarious shitshow. I should have clarified that I was more talking about the ”how does a service stop working over time” side, because so many people seem to be under the impression that because 25% dev strength Twitter hasn’t failed immediately, they can just keep it going indefinitely.

E: to expand on this.

Even if we somehow assume that Twitter's own code is so amazing and great that you could just do a code freeze and leave Twitter 5.78 up indefinitely and guarantee everything works perfectly (and we shouldn't; humans are imperfect, and everything we create is by definition also imperfect), it doesn't end there.

Twitter uses nodejs, which is a very popular Javascript framework. It's also known for being the Groverhaus of software development. Every nodejs package is built on a rickety chain of dependencies, and you have no way of guaranteeing that a library one of the sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-dependencies of the neat little text entry package you use is actually reliable and well made. Chances are it isn't! It's perfectly normal to do a vulnerability check on your system weekly and discover a dozen new problems, many of them critical vulnerabilities that might allow hackers to steal Twitter's user database or wipe their servers. But because nodejs is so popular and widely used, these problems get discovered very quickly, and then we hope the developers will patch them. Which they usually will.

But the thing is, those patches don't deploy on Twitter automatically, because it's always possible that the the patches will change how things work, and as a result just updating the packages you have installed on Twitter would also break Twitter. So first of all, do you have people actively doing vulnerability checks? Probably not for all your widgets and components after your boss fired 75% of your colleagues to streamline! But even if someone is somehow checking all those services, do you have people who know how to check if the new patches are safe to install, and to make the sometimes very sweeping changes and rewrites that you'd need to make your system compatible with the new versions? Again, probably not!

So while there isn't some "Keep Twitter running Y/N?" prompt a bunch of devs need to keep pressing every five minutes to keep the system running, if they leave Twitter as is, it's only a matter of time before the system becomes either critically compromised, or falls apart. And as DrPossum says, if they try to update stuff or actively develop it after losing so many key people...

Yeah it’s a department for Diversity and Inclusivity. They have a fair amount of power depending on the company and do things like adding pronouns to the company directory, moving the company away from problematic language like master/slave or white/blacklist. They also do meetups with POC at the company.

Rolling your eyes at DEI is the first sign I have that someone’s a chud. They might take some time for a second but it’s just work bro, it’s not your time, its the company’s. Who cares.

If Twitter doesn't go down sooner than later, it's gonna be insufferable hearing from people pointing and laughing at the engineers and reporting that said it only had weeks left.

It's also an example I'm hoping fails, as good lord bosses don't need to see a guy reduce his workforce by 75%+ and follow suit.

TLDR: developer served an infringement notice, took down all his packages, one of which was 11 lines of code to pad out the left side of strings, that ~EVERY nodejs installation uses. the internet stalled.

EDIT: note according to NPM stats that package still gets 2.4 million downloads/week.
