On top of the general hideousness of that it's also painfully unfunny. Does anyone actually like him as a comedian? Most people aware of him these days just seem to know him for that football song and his recent nonsense.

actual children, saw it in the shops. Don't know what sort of weirdo wants to buy their children a book by a washed up 90's comedian but maybe there's a bunch of sad dads out there

In the 90s I really liked him as a comedian. Newman and Baddiel: Live and in Pieces was my favourite comedy show for a long time but some of it has aged so terribly.

David Baddiel had a successful career as a comedian in the 90s because Rob Newman was funny.

The Mary Whitehouse experience was The Thing for my generation of students - Punt and Dennis,. Newman and Baddiel. Catchphrase heavy, and the other three where actually funny.

The part that sticks out most about old clips of Baddiel is that they demonstrate just how poor of a stand up his is. Had he not had material that kicked down he'd have nothing.

Even Frank Skinner's material has aged, but he could and can write a joke.

Doesn't surprise me that Baddiel is a fan of the old "if you want to look thin, surround yourself with fat people" ideology.

He must have seemed more witty and charming than usual that night.

I remember reading Frank Skinner's biography for some reason many years ago, and he seemed genuinely hosed up by a schoolyard incident where he bullied some other loser kid by making jokes at his expense, and recognised that it was a bad trait that he brought into his professional career. I'm not sure if he changed dramatically after that revelation, but it at least demonstrated some modicum of self-reflection that I doubt the Bad Eel is capable of.

I will probably watch his documentary to see if his apology to Jason Lee has any element of sincerity to it. My expectations are not high, I won't be surprised if he tries to turn it around - "antisemites use this to attack me, when they are in fact the real racists" stylee. But who knows, maybe he'll turn up to a right wing rally decked out in fascist gear and ask the camera, "Are we the Baddiels?"

Yeah one guy at work went on about Taskmaster for years but I always thought it looked poo poo, but then I gave it a go and it genuinely is great. Of course there's a lot of British comedians and 'slebs on there so that means there's quite a few people who are massive melts or worse (Baddiel, Richard Osman, Katherine Ryan all spring to mind) but also people who are great like Mel Giedroyc.

And yes, Alex Horne is a legend and despite being cast in the show as the "put upon/mistreated assistant" it's his show concept and he comes up with the challenges.

It can be a bit hit or miss and some of the series have people on who aren't actually that entertaining but when it's good it's really, properly hilarious.

Season 4 with Hugh Dennis, Mel Giedroc, Joe Lycett, Noel Fielding and Lolly Adefope is fantastic. Bob Mortimer and Sally Phillips are also particularly good.

I haven't watched S11 onwards yet, though.

I like Taskmaster, I think one of my favourite contestants was Romesh Ranganathan because he both tried the show as the absurd thing it is but also gave the challenges his all.

I also just like the guy.

If you like Alex Horne you should also watch No More Jockeys, a silly game he invented with Mark Watson and Tim Key a dozen or so years ago (when they were filming We Need Answers) and they have been playing on YouTube since the pandemic. Half hour episodes on Friday mornings, perfect for easing yourself into the last day of work/first day of weekend haze.

I think this make the rich pay NHS Scotland story is getting blown up to associate Scotland with privatising the NHS in general and put people off the idea of independence in a background radiation kind of way. Seems like Nicola Sturgeon was pretty direct in saying that it's not going to happen, it was just something brought up in a meeting. For all I know it's brought up in many meetings by some bozo and never goes anywhere, but it was front page news there and I think it's for that reason.

Court decision on whether Scotland can hold a referendum is coming this week so maybe that is motivating the framing.

I see that the Tories and their stooges at MI5 are still claiming that Shamima Begum is a threat to the UK and using that to justify Sajid Javeed's strongman act when he stripped her of her UK citizenship.

Even if you take everything she's ever said and done at face value and extrapolate that out for the 40-50 years more she might live*, she's still only a fraction of the threat to the UK that other UK citizens (like Rees-Mogg or Farage) are.

* - she probably won't live that long in a Syrian refugee camp.

Fair enough but I thought his schtick had worn a bit thin by the end of the series. I think his fallback for when he can't think of anything funny to say is just to say nothing and look like he's seething.

His standup can be quite funny I just don't think he's that good at being funny when put on the spot.
