A Plague Tale: Innocence

Although "Rat Tornado" sounds like the title of a Frank Zappa song, it's actually one of the defining features of Asobo Studios' "A Plague Tale: Innocence." Set in 14th century rural France, A Plague Tale tells the story of young Amicia and her little brother Hugo, in an adventure about corruption, disease, the nature of power, and rats. Lots and lots of rats. First off, it must be noted that Amicia has named her dog "Lion." Now, as some of you who have watched Animal Planet here and there know, lions are actually cats, not dogs. So right away we know that our protagonist isn't going to be joining MENSA any time soon. Her family lives in the idyllic French countryside, yet early on we see that the mother is rather secretive, especially when it comes to Hugo. If you're thinking that this is blatant foreshadowing relevant to the aforementioned rats, then I congratulate you for your recognition of obvious signposting! The rustic atmosphere is broken however, when the Catholic inquisition busts in, murdering people left and right (no one expected it), only to be upstaged by a mysterious trembling force that overtakes them and distributes some murderin' of its own.

Amicia and Hugo are now on the run and it's up to you to travel through the country and find the source of the plague. Usually escort quests are a hassle but Hugo isn't overly obtrusive. Guards, as far as I can tell, don't really 'see' him when you're stealthing around either. I will say up front that APT:I is a good game but for our purposes, the question is whether it's a good stealth game. And the answer is that if you're looking for a good old Thief-like stealth sandbox, then no, your stealth princess is in another stealth castle. There is some promise here, but really the game is primarily about the narrative experience, it's quite a bit on-rails, and the few nice stealthy moments are tacked on between the grandiose setpieces and puzzles. Amicia has a number of tools at her disposal to deal with guards - a powder that makes them fall asleep, a sling for a fatal shot to the head, a potion to direct hordes of rats their way, and so on. However, the only hiding you can do is from cover and light and shadow don't really play a big part of it. Most of the time you'll be wanting to get guards out of the way as quickly as possible before the hordes of rats become unmanageable.

There's lots of good to be had with APT:I - it definitely has a great story experience (despite the clunky foreshadowing) and the scenery is breathtaking to behold. But as a stealth experience, it only delivers the bare minimum and this should be kept in mind for your Black Friday credit-card-thrashing spree.

Yeah that's the way I figured it too, SA - you phrase it better than I do, though! It's not very heavy on stealth, but what stealth is there is fun all the same, IMO

Yeah, there are definitely times when they sprinkle stealth setpieces about, but usually when I saw those my first thought was, "how can I get an army of angry rats to devour all these guards?" That raises the question of which game has the better rats-devouring-guards mechanic: Plague Tale or Dishonored? Plague Tale is much more epic, but the controls are way better in Dishonored, so eh

Anyways, next stop - A Plague Tale: Requiem! Will it be stealthier than the last one? Let's find out!

Yeah that's true, it shares a lot of rat-vibes with Dishonored. I think late-game APT probably edges out for the best feeling of seeing guards get wiped out, but yeah overall Dishonored would take the cake
