Hmm. We knew the 4 collected companies. But these other foils are also a bit... sus. The pathway is basically the only card that is not collected company or a hit from collected company. Half of these foils are sideboard cards too, important ones.

That is the upkeep collected company. It didn't make sense. It also hit two of those foil cards previously shown. Hmm, i guess it makes more sense if you had a good idea about the top card?

The reports are coming in from other players that his cards were marked in other ways and that he is using the Secret Lair thing as a cover when he was just blatantly cheating, so I'm gonna let this one play out a bit before I believe any claims that he had "bad foils".

Aphrodite

Plus if it’s just about curved foils what does Secret Lair have to do with any of it? They’re not foiled any differently.

The first one I ever saw, the first I ever knew about them existing, was me opening a foil thieving magpie.

I was super confused. Why have they gone to all this effort for this one card? I mean, it makes sense, with the flavour and all, but, why?

There's no such rule. It's a good idea for an individual, sure. But even then, it's not foolproof: DFCs don't curl because they're foiled on both sides, FTVs curl even more aggressively...

I remember a similar thing happening to someone who had a bunch of altered art cards from Feline Longmore. They basically got DQed because of how the alter affected how the cards looked and felt in sleeve. The moral of the story is just don't play foils/altered art stuff in anything except EDH.

Edit: As much. They weren't fully immune to it either but it wasn't anything like today's.

It was still a problem back then because they were thicker too. Remember playing with someone in a tournament who had an entirely foil Affinity deck in standard, otherwise you almost never saw foils at big tournaments.

I used beta and APAC lands for bling for that reason

original mtg foils definitely didn't curl nearly as badly, the cardstock was much sturdier. I pulled out my remnants from my original collection from over 20 years ago and my urza's legacy/destiny/masques foils were still almost entirely flat, meanwhile I'm sure thread regs remember when I posted my commander legends collector pack results, which were so pringled they literally could not stack on top of each other

Apparently Pokemon promo foils curl badly, but not regular ones.

Different card stock for promos? Or different foiling process?

The only issue with old foils is the cloudy issues with them. You are right in that the current state of magic cards and foils is due to cooperate greed and using the shittiest paper they can.

I forget his name and exact circumstance but on stream once an SCG grinder shuffled away his only basic island from the top of his deck, got his opponent to shuffle and cut, and then drew it on his next draw step and revealed it to his opponent and stream for a laugh. Then like a month later he got me tooed.

Players doping noopic drugs for a perceived edge. People sneaking in tech to be able to read miniscule material variations in even the freshest sleeves/cardbacks. Hooligan violence after fav lost to mana flooding. Scratchers sold at gas stations but you scratch to reveal what card is hidden under, hoping to get a dual land or some other rare lotto chase card. special version of the game with no-gambling because of gambling laws. Foils aren't damaged by default. One sunday a year everyone gets drunk and eats garbage food while watching the Ultra Pro Championship. Instead of players manipulating shuffles and marking cards n poo poo we get more elaborate make-a-movie-about-it schemes and hijinks for trying to corrupt, plant, or manipulate a licensed Magic Dealer or particular Magic Casino.

Having a dealer might even open up new design space. Wonder if they'd change the language of drawing cards?

Has there ever been a movie based around or even nominally involving Magic or another TCG? I can think of some anime but not any live action films or shows. Or even just a one off episode, like some shows have a DnD-esque episode in some fashion. ill even take a family guy reference bit. maybe big bang theory mentioned it once, anything?

Bob's Burgers had an episode centered around a not-Pokemon card fad, although it focused more on the trading/collecting than an active game
