But bro-code!

Ethan's not a good guy. He's constantly condescending to his wife and forcing her to do all the communication. Just two equally hosed up relationships forming an oroboros of infidelity and distrust.

I kind of agree with the idea Lucia and Mia are this season's main characters. I'm enjoying them more each week. I thought the role reversal between them this episode was fun although the 'i've created a monster' line was a bit over the line, I know it was supposed to be funny but it was teetering on dumb for me. Really curious what Lucia's intentions are with Albie, though. She doesn't seem to be approaching him as a prostitute, or maybe that's still to come, so does she actually like him? Or is she just trying to gently caress with his dad for cutting them off? That wouldn't really fit with her sudden case of religious shame this week, but that's why it's interesting. Wonder what she's up to, or if she even knows.

Tanya's treatment of Portia has tipped her over to fully unlikable for me, got zero sympathy and don't give a poo poo what happens to her.

The english guy was kind of interesting because his patter was pretty terrible to me but he just got away with all of it. He is the kind of guy Portia was saying she wanted at the start, but she'll probably be bored/turned off by him once the sexual tension is gone.

Is Valentina gay, then? She was so gushy and bare in her attempts to get close to the receptionist (name?) this week that it seems like the obvious thing but I think it would be more interesting if she isn't, and she's just so bad at making friends that getting such an effusive compliment has blown her mind. Her terrible customer service is still giving me the most laughs each episode. How the hell did she even get the job?

Ethiser posted:

Pretty disappointed in this whole plot, really. It's such a tired writing cliche to have people just refuse to discuss something. Maybe some people are actually like this like, but I can't imagine honestly thinking my spouse had just cheated on me and playing coy about it all - maybe give them a chance first, but I'm not just silently fuming in bed all night about it, and Ethan just going along with this brocode bullshit when it is 100% clear that his wife thinks that he is the one who cheated on her and not telling her will absolutely destroy his marriage. It'd take about 10 seconds to follow the logic of that.

Add to that the sort of predictable turn of the whole Cameron is a cheater plot and this is the low point of the show for me just now when two episodes ago I was enjoying all four.

It will probably move on and be entertaining again but poo poo I just wish they could've skipped this whole middle part. Not really a strong episode compared to the first few.

Are we even 100% sure he didn’t gently caress anyone? Is he even 100% sure? Like, afaik bro code guy didn’t even go into Ethan’s room until the morning so I’m not even sure where that condom wrapper came from.

multiple times, really? because i didn't pick up on that at all before this episode. yeah she was pretty brutal to that guy who came onto her in the coffee shop but i took that as just exasperation because she deals with it every day and, (i don't know if this actually true but it's been present in the show), a reaction to italian men in particular being really aggressive with the come ons.

but i guess it's a done deal, and now that i think about it her coming on to the receptionist so hard fits in with the general theme of sexual dynamics better than her just not knowing how to have a friend.

they were all in ethan's room in the scene where cameron was having sex with lucia on the couch, which is where the condom was found. it's from that. i just went back and checked because i thought you might be right.

Valentina is def gay and if they wanna do a season 1 throwback she’ll be rimming Isabella in the cash office within a few episodes.

I’m thinking the new ripped British boy toy is himself a sex worker who hangs around with the rich older men (a lower class kid who’s been on vacation with his “uncle” for two months?) and something weird is going on with the whole set of Tanya’s new friends anyway.

This is definitely true. Pretty much every friend I have had that has been to Italy states the same thing. Strangely I didn't even find the men staring at Audrey Plaza scene from last episode that creepy, simply because it so closely matched experiences I had related to me that it was normalized in my mind.

And if you want some really fun reading I would suggest looking at the history of rape laws in Italy. Or the current ones.

I thought Cameron was being somewhat flirty with Ethan in last week's episode but it was still kind of ambiguous, so I laughed when he just straight up said "I want to be inside you" to Ethan. That clearly wasn't the first time he'd said that either.

In the opening scene, I don’t think they said anyone was specifically killed, just that there were multiple dead bodies floating around. Maybe Tanya and the gay guys partied too hard on their boat and fell off and drowned.

My main complaint of this season is probably that Sicily doesn’t feel as important to the story as Hawaii did in the first season. When your story is partially about colonization the place is obviously going to matter more, but I can’t see any of the characters finding some semblance of peace from their surroundings like the son last season found in Hawaiian culture. The closest thing I could see happening is maybe Albie or someone in his family finds some connection to their families history in Italy, but I think we’re pretty late in the season to see that develop.

If Dom's estranged wife shows up after all, she will be incensed that Dom added Mia and Lucia's names to his and Bert's rooms, and that they have been running up huge bills. She was already furious on the phone, and I believe her voice was Laura Dern, so she could actually appear and bring all kinds of rage and chaos with her.

At first I was worried Albie could become a toxic "Nice Guy" when he was rejected, but he seems more like a for-real nice guy with limited game. I definitely relate to that! But I think it will destroy him when he finds out Lucia was not only a prostitute, but a prostitute his father already hired and had his way with (and may need to pay off on Albie's behalf).

I wouldn't put it past a distraught and rosé-fueled Tanya to preemptively kill her husband when he returns, rather than voicing her suspicions to him (mirroring Harper's dilemma).

I was actually thinking if she sees a bikini on his room charge he actually has an excuse now. It’s his son’s gf’s suit! That excuse will only last half an ep before it explodes, but it will buy time.

I didn't consider the wife actually showing up, huh.

I don't think Lucia is gonna ask for blowjob money from Albie; I think she did that because she wanted to, not as a a, uh, "transaction". The question is, was it out of pity? Genuine attraction? Or gold-digger reasons (rich dork boyfriend = clothing store)?

Valentina strikes me as more of a Nice Guy than anyone else in this setting tbh.

Agreed that the "nephew" from Essex is probably some sort of a sex worker; the class disparity, the accent... I have difficulty believing he's related to Tom Hollander's character.

Will Sharpe (Ethan) is probably new to most people ITT but it's been weird for me to see him in this because I've been following him for a bit. He wrote and starred in a British dramedy show (Flowers) that was really good but which nobody watched, and was also really good in Giri/Haji, which nobody watched also. He also wrote and directed a movie with Benedict Cumberbatch that came out last year which I haven't seen yet. I didn't expect him to show up in this show opposite Aubrey Plaza looking hench as gently caress, but good for him
For those who haven't watched Giri/Haji it is indeed distracting me trying not to see Will Sharpe as this dude:

I'm liking the show, but I'm frustrated and not quite as immediately drawn in as in Season 1. I love Aubrey Plaza and at this point am completely on board with her character; she's extremely unpleasant and is absolutely a factor in her own sex life being bad, but I love how hosed up she is by realizing that her husband is dipping his toes into Cameron's awful lifestyle. I'm assuming 100% that Ethan didn't actually have any sex or do anything more than what we were shown, but choosing to follow Cameron's "bro code" is basically a test drive on how it would feel to have cheated and then lie to his wife. He's just coming off as insanely pathetic. Even before, when Harper explains that Cameron got inappropriately nude around her, he shrugs it off for no good reason while she's obviously trying to broach a difficult subject.

The Albie and Portia stuff isn't working so much for me yet but idk. It just feels a bit like a generic summer camp adventure or something where awkward young people experience completely normal feelings and it's weird but fun.
