Just my impression, but the White House press corps is pissy because they were told there would be no press at the wedding but pictures from a pre-wedding photo shoot were published in Vanity Fair. Obviously this is exactly as bad as all the lies the Trump administration told, because it thwarted the desires of journalists to feel like they're actually friends with the people they're reporting on. Or to feel important. Something like that.

It's the natural consequence of a world with no upper bound on how much news there can be. You aren't trying to move a newspaper or a magazine, you are pursuing Clicks and ad impressions, and the clicks must flow. Nothing is too trivial or stupid, for everyone needs Content, and they take grave offense to being denied any kind of content (especially the poo poo that's easy to write about). Government cannot be boring and private lives cannot stay private, in this world, because they don't give a poo poo about reality or what's good for society, but rather that their source of income is running dry.

MSNBC and Fox News in 1996. For CNN the big break was the first Gulf War. Fox came out swinging against Clinton and came into their own with the impeachment. MSNBC never actually became a real player, but their big thing was being the resistance to W after the 9/11 invulnerability star faded. 9/11 just made everything temporarily 24/7 news and brought the terrible genre to it's pinnacle.
