There is no way you can add a layer of those blocks and suddenly achieve a 0.3 U value. If you look at the brochures, they achieve that kind of U-value in combination with cavity fill insulation. They are just a normal aerated block. I would say then the option is to use non rockwool/glaswool insulation that can handle moisture. As much as is feasible on the inside. I have a hard time seeing you can add more than 50mm though without reducing the size of the interior too much unless it's a big place. And somone said to watch the ceiling, insulation there does a lot, more than walls. Though I dunno if that applies with stone walls.

Until we reach 1st December we can't be certain which definition the thread uses!

Threads use the meteorological calendar, where winter starts December 1st and ends February last. Solstice Equinox Solstice Equinox is the astronomical calendar, which I think is what they're using to calculate the bills

Following on from insulation/efficiency chat… Our house has double glazing with plastic frames (in brown colour, ugh). It’s probably 20+ years old and a few of the panes have condensation in the middle, but they’re generally in good nick. Im finding it really hard to find any information about whether 2022 double glazing is significantly better and more efficient than the older stuff. We have been visited by a couple of salespeople and they claim that new stuff will be more efficient (of course they will) but is that really the case? Unless of course we go for the super expensive triple glazed or the vacuum sealed stuff. We were originally planning on replacing them all but figured if we can paint the frames and replace a couple of panes, is it worth it?

Pantsmaster Bill posted:Following on from insulation/efficiency chat… It's not. Studies in done in Sweden showed that refitting late 1800s windows (single pane with an interior frame you put up for winter) with modern 3 glaze windows wasn't economically justifiable. They're better ofc, but not really as much as you think. And this is comparing technologies from different centuries. It''s one massive huge leap forward to go from single glaze to a storm window, but from there on it's massively diminshed returns. It's more a question of if the windows are tight, if you think the old ones look like crap.

Pantsmaster Bill posted:Following on from insulation/efficiency chat… Current double glazing would be more efficient than 20+ DG down to improvements in frame design, materials and glazing. Especially if some of your current windows are damaged or allowing moisture in. Don't go near triple glazing, it is crazy expensive for new builds and even worse for retrofits. You are better off looking at your wall insulation, attic insulation and heating system as windows can alway have curtains drawn on them to retain heat. Also discuss with an expert instead of a salesman, they can run the tests on your existing to see where the main issues are in your house. Even replacing panes can be a pain, especially if your house is a protected structure. Councils can and will force you to replace existing uPVC windows with historically accurate / appropriate looking windows.

Yeah if you have condensation between the panes it has completely failed and is only marginally better than single glazing The difference when we replaced all the ancient single-glazing with DG after moving in was insane in terms of comfort, allowed us to push back Thermal Winter by a few months

At least comparatively. Which means you might not get as much benefit, and pay more for it.
