hope you are keeping well there

birds were fed

hole was scraped a bit

this wasp kept bumping into this window for about 10 minutes, but it's not my place to interfere

pond water level dropped slightly but that's very deceptive- all the soil around is getting very wet and muddy again

labels applied unevenly on purpose but bah gawd if it doesn't bring that project together a bit

I'm still recovering so today's prime goal was investigating if the new gate had been finished- it is now done with and so my car access is better again and I feel pretty chipper so there will be more soon

And I ripped the ground a little :)

Mushrooms are springing up everywhere.

robins are still the bravest, angriest little shitheads and I love them

Well it was split wood or get the concrete blocks dug in, and I couldn't find my planters hoe so here we are

Split, bag, take a break, split, bag, take a break, that's the union way (we also sing)

4 bags done, and if I had longer and/or less sense then I might have managed 5 or 6- another day or two's worth still needs to be done before the cutting season ideally

Checked the control panel out and I had accidentally left everything turned on and that's why the battery was a little low, lol

the green sabre labour

whatup

Brought some of the boyos in to join these two pallets back into one again (found 'em like that)- this is what's going atop the concrete blocks to hold up the big water container, and I will probably attach this to the benchshelter too

Temp wasn't too low but the wind was strong, constant and from the north, so 3 coffees, bighat and the neck scarf were the only thing keeping the camo jacket from coming out

Slapped on some green. Couldn't find a paintbrush or roller (maybe because I ran out and forgot to buy more or maybe I lost them or maybe a rat ran off with them :iiam:)so I used the brush from the dustpan and brush from the caravan

Wanted to do the guttering too but I left the clips for that in the car and rather than retrieve them from the top of the hill and push too hard on a poo poo day... I did the smart thing and tidied up and admired the office a bit while deciding what comes next before bailing

Got the brushcutter out of storage on my way home, it's getting the full service it's needed for years and either that or another farm trip where you will see more, soon!

wasn't planning on today but the chance came up for an hour or so at the last minute and it makes a change from things being hosed over for me at the last minute

it was raining a bit (not enough for a big coat) but I stained these up some anyway using cover of the benchshelter. If you are wondering how I dealt with the mess on the shelterbench, I did so by not giving a gently caress.

Pond has risen a bit, has a few sub-puddle formations

At the end I went and did some diplomacy regards access and a few other local issues (preventative stuff- pinch in time saves nine etc)

yearly service, 6 years overdue

This one's been a real champ without complaint for seven years now (apart from when I broke it), so let's give it a proper service

This bit chops the excess strimmer cord away, and recently it's been leaving split ends which is bad for some reason or other

And after a few passes from the farmers file, it's gonna do it much better again- a replacement would have been cheap but my labour is always cheaper

Strimmer head is a bit beat up and needs some love-

Inner reel is a straight swap- it still functioned fine but the plastic was fair chewed up and it wouldn't have lasted much longer

These metal tabs act as runners for the strimmer cord to stop the cord eating the plastic case

Again, a cheap replacement is available but you can also just tug em out (satisfying, they fight you a bit and you have to wiggle em like a tooth) and turn em around and see if they last another 7 years

Now the explodey end of things

Two sets of air filters cause this is a posh machine

Definitely a few years overdue

What lurks under the skid plate?

Horrors, dear reader. Horrors.

Only way to get to the fuel filter though, which didn't look too bad at all- now I'm done I kinda wish I had done the primer bulb and fuel lines too just so they were fresh

Last up was spark plug (only thing to have been replaced before) and fixing up the bodged spark plug boot with some good old JB weld- this part I would love to replace properly but they only sell the whole ignition unit not the little bit I need and it's loving how much so it will continue to be a bodge for now

With that all done, it's time for me to put on some music and take my medication just as the doctor prescribed- things have been a little busy but I'm hoping to be there tomorrow so that there will be more soon

Apart from the easily hosed up ignition coil to the spark plug, yeah it really is orders of magnitude above anything else I have wrenched on, absolute joy to work with, made to last and made to be serviced

the other mechanical wonder

was hoping to get down (it's more sideways and a little bit up) to the acres today but had to attend to other matters like getting a clean pass on the MOT, not even an advisory notice, which for a luxury german car now old enough to vote is a real get the gently caress in moment

which lets me go collect poo poo like my fresh new goggles from screwfix and do shopping and stuff without having legal problems and now my bag is all packed for tomorrow morning so there will be more soon

mah punkins

Hi

Not many flowers to be found right now, this raspberry is trying though, goddamnit

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qd5--Qv20M

So there was a bit of rain before I got down there but then it started to rain rain. Thought a little on bailing out, instead I put on my poncho and got some motherfuckin' work done with the thinking that farmer should be a title that's earnt and not bought

Let's sort this loving base out once and for all

I hate leveling stuff but I guess if you hate something and keep at it anyway eventually it gets easier cause this took awhile but not as long as I feared

Need a dry day or two so I can use some construction adhesive to make a nice mating surface but otherwise the base is about ready

About the time I laid the fifth block I started to feel pretty loving run down, so I immediately downed tools and sorted my poo poo out with a ration of beans and some coffee- no room to gently caress around and find out when the weather is a little rough

Oh yeah those pumpkins?

Oh yeah those pumpkins :biglips:

Well they were cheap and I figured I would stick em in front of the trailcam and watch the carnage- had to give em a good start so I hacked em up with the mora a bit

Reckon a magpie will be the first in on that? I will let you know, because there will be more, soon!

hit and run, not poo poo and fun

so some shithead drove into my beloved shitheap of a car and while I don't really give a gently caress about the dent and scrape etc my driver's side window also stopped working, possibly/probably finished off by the jolt

If you go back a little over 4 years in this thread you will find me swapping out the exact same part, would be tempting to ignore like so many other bits but I can't function without my window especially when the aircon is still hosed

Take apart the door in the cold while the wind keeps slamming it on your leg

Find the old regulator broken and not even attached to the door, bolt missing, sigh, repair, installation was not reverse of installation but close enough, no leftover parts

next up should be installing a gutter and drainpipe on the shelter which was meant to be today but lol, poo poo happens, more soon

getting it done

Hi. Some parts were misty, others foggy.

Pond specialist told me it was fairly wet

rajah brand seasonings kick arse, especially the curry powder mixes, strong recommendation

Which is good, cause these fellas like it hot and fruity

Can't lift this with water in, so we tipped it out into the pond and scraped out all the greenery too- bit sad I can't keep it in the container but it may survive the outside world

If you are wondering whether it's the bench, the roof or the gutter that's wonky, the answer is they all are very wonky but water flows in the right direction and the tap is high enough off the ground to fill buckets/watering cans easily- the downpipe connections are a bit leaky and it needs a better filter than some stacked plant pots but that can be sorted another time

The mist stayed all morning

I didn't, cause it's a really lovely day for me so I bailed the gently caress out and I'm gonna sit under a blanket and get toasted and toasty but you wonderful motherfuckers know that there will be more, soon

hi

pond now happening beyond recent excavation efforts

robins, angry, bold.

pallets, legally, dubious.

rain, constant, chilly.

we put some woodwork in, didn't get many pictures of this but we worked on a future cupboard and many other small bits

fixed up the gutter some more, found out the connection works perfectly when not installed upside down, next stage is leaf protection and a better filter setup

Cat(s) been busy making themselves at home

thought this was vomit, turns out it's a slime mold or something fungal

the crows are getting pretty used to me throwing out seeds/nuts when I come in/leave, they chased the magpies off the drop and watched us with great interest. More. Soon.

cutting the mustard

hi

Maybe next time it will be all over the base and will progress from puddle to pond

You know that idea where there's only one electron in the whole universe and it's just really busy? Watching my angry friends has me thinking there's just one robin, everywhere.

At least 100 litres so far- equivalent to more than three of the green kegs I used to bring in

Our good friend returns, and as always I check the bar oil and chain tensioner

tried this method before and all the logs wanted to buck on me, thought on it and tried it with a bunch more logs to weigh things down/pack things out and it worked a lot better

Moved out the old logs to the other side so I could keep it all the same vintage

Packed it out fast, maybe three barrows worth?

Which means the only room left was with other old wood so some is gonna be mixed vintage but whatever I'm outta options otherwise so two and a bit barrows went on this pile cause I didn't make more storage yet

Spiced meatballs with rice and three cups of coffee took my mind off the cold and wind a bit

Spread the sawdust over some of the mud

This close to solstice, it gets dark, quick. Went from alright while I packed, to nearly requiring a torch on the hike out

That's all the excess log from the last cutting season processed into roughly 8" lengths and stowed- about ready for the next cutting season. I'm opening up a new makita product as I type this and I have poo poo to tell you about but you are just gonna have to be patient dear reader and wait for more, soon.

Yeah I had been warned before- I think a reasonable filter pack should help, will have to see how it goes

delved too deep

Hi

It does indeed now fill out the bottom nicely

Nearly another 100 litres

New tool

Old poser

Made short work of this pathway that was getting overgrown

Tried out this other new tool as well, cuts very well but it's not a direct replacement for my laplander one- just not rugged enough and a little too large for a pocket

Canned chicken and mushroom became chicken and mushroom curry and it was better than it looks (not really hard)

Really does work great on bramble

It was a struggle to get there today and I got there and then pushed too hard having fun with powertools, had to bail and I'm headed deep into a flare-up while feeling stupid for pushing myself which sucks but what doesn't suck is that there will be more, soon.

on my way in, cuteness ensued

-3°C. Or 270°K if you want to use sensible measurements. First proper frost this year.

birds really appreciated my efforts

danny five acres? more like danny five layers- thermals, vest, long T, fleece, ripstop shirt but it worked great, comfy at all times, think I need a new hat tho

took the new clippers to the patch I had hoped to clear out for the cabin- still plenty to be done but some progress made, and next time I can bring the big tape measure and figure out dimensions

The firewood cube tarps have been bad awhile, leaving the wood underneath to the elements

Not gonna get the veg patch up this winter so used the boards to try and prevent the tarp caving in with water

This can now hopefully finish drying out for splitting next year sometime

been a little while since I saw it like this, really enjoyed a second mug of coffee and a wander before I packed up

Fatigue and other circumstances keep stealing useful days from me but there's a bunch of stuff approaching fruition that I'm hoping is really going to take things to the next level so we can do more, soon

back in the gutter where I belong

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVNRSr7XxZk

It's fuckin' chilly out there, dear reader

Pond froze

Lock froze

Balls froze

Bullied by robins, I made sure a good winter mix was available for all

First I cleared out as much of the frozen leaves as I could and cleared out the downpipe

Then I installed some protective hardware- initially I was looking at generic cheap mesh and clips, but the manufacturer of the gutter did their own and it was cheaper. I was gonna look at the filter system too, but didn't want to gently caress with the plastic plant pots while so cold as I already accidentally hosed up a bucket today with it being so brittle

I started boiling the kettle when I got there, it still hadn't boiled 40 mins later when I finished the job- the butane was coming out more like slush, and it could barely keep a flame going. Friendship with butane perilous at this point, giving some serious side eye to propane and propane accessories.

Think the cold snap might finally take the leaves off the more stubborn oaks

Chilly out but I stayed warm and got a few bits done- another more informative writeup about the current situation is about half written and I hope to speak with you again tomorrow, so there will be more, soon

state of this loving post I swear

lets fix up this drill, it was my first makita product- given to me secondhand in lieu of some cash on a job- and it really needs a fresh chuck and new motor, fortunately parts availability is amazing even though this is old and out of production I could literally build an entire new one from scratch

et voila, shame I didn't get many process photos, my finest work yet etc.....

Yeah I didn't do that- cost of parts would have been £45, found this going for £40 on offer, and yeah I ran around with both of them pretending I was doing that bit from hot fuzz pew pew motherfuckers. Will keep the old one on till its actually broken then fix it anyway because I'm attached to it

So after that bait and switch where are we at?

State of The Acres Winter 2022 Addendum

First up, the tree donations I haven't mentioned much for a year or so-

Combination of me not wanting a busy planting season next spring and the whole collapse of civilisation had me not really mentioning the kofi tree planting donations page much, but we still had about £30 in donations, so I'm doubling it to £60 and will put in an order of tree soon- if theres a genus you wanna see, yell about it

Second order of business, what's happening?-

A whole lot of decision paralysis to be honest- I had a lot of plans for a lot of time that were never going to go anywhere because of a lack of cash, everything was on a very limited budget, that's now changing and its a weird loving feeling. Anyway, rough general goals for the next 6 months or so-

1: build the other shelterbench
2: start building work on first cabin
3: buy a fuckin' awesome pickup truck/4x4
4: have no plants left in the nursery
5: smokevape weed everyday

had to hike it all in the long way (but not the long long way or the super long way)

pond expert was fairly impressed

up over 300 litres and with the side bulging that's good for a few extra litres there too

no idea what brought this little one out of hibernation

got two pairs of new work trousers recently, today's pair were nowhere near as good on the ol' bramble resistance, and goddamn just look at that cluster of spite there, ow

was walking the northernmost path and found this- something as yet unknown dug up this pile of soil, quite sandy compared with other places I dug here, stones are smaller and more rounded looking too

this nest is the tits, and why this pathway is gonna have to lean out sideways for the foreseeable future- the residents make the decisions around here. Luckily most of the other places I want/need/desire/aspire/crave to work on are free of such obstructions when I checked today, getting hyped up for chainsaw season.

weren't really due to be working physically much today but with a child labourer clearing the ditch only took a few minutes

Plans for the shelterbench are pretty much as set as they can be, cabin plans are still being decided (can't pick a roof type, rest is looking good). Next month or two will be spent largely chopping while I try and find a pickup/4x4 locally, then a brief planting season then when the access road is more accessible again I can bring in supplies to build.

That's the next six months or so hopefully, more, soon!

Ooo! Look at me! NO DON'T LOOK AT ME!

Happy new year's Dan! I always liked the concept of monument trees. There were some centuries old planted oaks around where I grew up, it gave perspective for young me. Trees grow large.

Where's my cow?

Is that my cow?

No it isn't, but it still tramples my bloody lavender.

happy new year :)

the oldest maps I can find of the acres have it marked as farmland, but there's a little copse at the corner where I come in that's always been a copse, going back to the 1860s or so and some of the oaks there are too big to wrap my arms around

And I tried

Cause I hug trees sometimes

reet wimdy

hi

had to feed the burbs

pond got bigger

this went over a lot lower on the first pass, think it's an a400m

water up a bit on the markers, and a lot more in the bulge, guess this is why they get kept in metal cages

today was meant to be chainsaw time but if the winds hadn't been too high, my energy levels definitely were not up to it, but the birds needed a feed and I needed to get out the house. More. Soon.

danger on the wind

wimdy am calt, but no reet calt

pond keeps filling, and the sides of the water container are widening like my waistline after I hit 25

always lube up and check your chain tensioner

see that clump of three trees in the middle there?

gottem. wasn't anything personal, mind

They were awkward cuts for a scrub like me, all grown together- a sudden strong gust pushed the tree into my cut hard and the chainsaw went right through what little was left of the hinge in an instant, nearly dragging the saw out of my arms as a hundred kilos+ of tree grabbed hold and decided which way to go, within a hairs whisp of crushing/snapping the bar. It was too windy to fell today- and I'm lucky my reminder was fairly lenient.

After a few minutes to gather myself I proceeded to start dealing with the felled trees, piling the branches for hedgerow creation and saving the better bits of wood, but ran out of battery power before I could finish up- should have brought more with me

On my way out carrying everything a chunk of mud slid out from under me and I fell down a steep slope- no serious injuries but some bruises and scratches and I managed to wrench my shoulder and hip a bit making sure I didn't fold a leg underneath myself, even worse, my rucksack got hosed up a bit more. With hopefully a little better luck there will be more, soon

I'm gonna put in some work on steps for that bit of the ditch I fell down and my allowable maximum wind for felling is being cut back as well, two close calls in a day has to be a wake-up call for safety
