Chinese woman stabbed another Chinese woman 27 times in Bangkok today. Apparently there were blackmail photos involved. I wonder if she'll go with the Burzum defense of "I stabbed him eight times and then he fell through a pane of glass and that accounts for the other stabbings".

The Foxconn protests seem to be a boon for Taiwan independence given how vocal people are that it's not a Chinese company: https://twitter.com/realsteelmuslim/status/1595596038550990848 https://twitter.com/Angelo4justice3/status/1595653461076766720 https://twitter.com/aerielist/status/1595643602671226881 https://twitter.com/zhao_dashuai/status/1595738256288927744 Disheartening to see such splittism

Am I missing something? Nobody is defending Foxconn. Or at least nobody should be defending Foxconn. And remember when their response to workers committing suicide due to overwork and terrible conditions was to put in nets, so the workers would not die and could instead go back to work? Every single report about that said it was a Taiwanese Company. Nor have I seen anything anything conflating this to a protest against China or the CCP. It's all "Foxconn workers at the Foxconn factory in Zhengzhou are protesting at their treatment." And what the gently caress does any of this have to do with Taiwan gaining independence?

Living near some of their factories for years, and getting to know some neighbours who work there, the general impression of Foxconn as an employer seems to be "unusually prone to bullshit tricks, and unusually harsh when things don't work out, but they tend to pay more than nearby equivalent jobs, so people work for them." This is only one location, and the plural of anecdote is not data, but that's what I've heard. And I guess secondhand beats tenth-hand or whatever?

I read a general ranking of places to work once, I think it was in Factory Girls. Like talking about what nationality of factory you want for being treated well/paid decently/etc. Japanese was the top IIRC, maybe German. Taiwan was down near the bottom (you'll never guess what the bottom was).

Unless there is something bad associated with it. Then it suddenly becomes The Other and don't you dare confuse the two. It's amusing to see the heel turn.

Authorities need a different message to convince a fearful public that it is possible to live with the virus. and as I've observed previously - China needs to be able to mobilize neighbouring teams to overcome shortages in ER capacity: quote:Ben Cowling, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Hong Kong, said China’s healthcare system risked being overwhelmed like that of Hong Kong earlier this year if it did not follow the likes of Singapore in preparing for an exit. That would involve radically changing the zero-Covid rules so that only severe cases were hospitalised. this is stretching dynamic clearing to a faintly absurd point - the facilities are not allowed to isolate people for long enough to eliminate community transmission, but they're also not allowed to stop containing people until community transmission stops being detected

Regionalizing COVID response to manage limited emergency medical resources seems impractical given how wildly transmissible it is. Unless they do something like, “okay Hangzhou, Chengdu, and Harbin are sealed off for the next two months while COVID burns itself out there, then repeat with the next group of cities”, which I can’t imagine is going to be a very popular idea. Omicron spreads too easily to just be like “we’ll open up the whole country and respond to the hot spots”, they’ll all be hotspots. They either have to just rip the band aid off and get it done or continue the lockdown whack a mole for the rest of time.

Shouldn't step 1 in getting out of Zero Covid be to get absolutely everyone vaccinated? Seems like the CCP should be able to go "It takes the vaccine or it gets the lockdown again" on the population.

Seems like the CCP should be able to go "It takes the vaccine or it gets the lockdown again" on the population. The currently dominant strains (such as BQ and XBB) are famously the most immune evasive things we've seen, even more evasive than SARS 1. https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.09.15.507787v4 No vaccine works the way you suggest on COVID anymore, especially in terms of affecting the ability to trasmit the virus, which the vaccines were never good at even in 2021. Any strategy, here or in China, that leans exclusively on vaccinations without additional air hygeine and air isolation is bound to fail, resulting in a guaranteed national petrie dish of sickness and new strains. Most people do not know that about vaccines or their metrics, or don't want to know because it violates State promises that nothing difficult is or ever was required to avoid COVID. Generally only people who follow immunology literature know. maxwellhill fucked around with this message at 08:57 on Nov 25, 2022 |

Vaccination was always intended to buy time and there was never a plausible strategy where Covid didn't eventually enter general circulation for the foreseeable future.
