I didn't anticipate how uncomfortable the nose clip would be, I guess you'd get used to it. If you wore them, which in reality I probably wont. But for 2 bucks and change, I wanted to have them.

Don't go cheap on sunglasses. Cheap sunglasses can cause your irises to not contract while still allowing in harmful wavelengths of light.

JFC we had a post about this, in this thread, by a goon in a physics lab who tested a bunch of sunglasses with a spectrometer and showed that the cheap ones were fine.

For those that missed it -

One of the cheapest ways to make a lens with decent optical quality is to use polycarbonate. Evidenced by the basically disposable safety glasses that bolle make you can get at the hardware store for a few bucks.
Polycarbonate is naturally opaque in the UV frequencies that harm your eyes.

I'm using it with a 8bitdo pro 2 and it works great. I've tried it on Gamecube, N64, and Genesis and the buttons all mapped logically without any futzing. You need to flash the universal firmware when you get the device. I move the core between consoles and it has no issues (it remembers the controller pairing), so you really only need one core unless you want multiple for convenience.

8bitdo is on the high end for latency, but it should still only be 1 added frame of lag at the worst.

Some other fun things it does is it will emulate a multi-tap on consoles that support them, so you can pair 7 controllers through one adapter. Also it supports BT keyboard and mouse for things like the Dreamcast and PS2 and SNES mouse. The developer is very active and the feature set will likely keep expanding.

A few issues I've had: figuring out which mode to use on the 8bitdo was tricky. X-input was giving me wacky mapping on Gamecube and non-analog sticks. Switching to one of the others made it work fine. I couldn't flash the thing with Windows for some reason, but flashing via BT on my phone using the web interface worked fine, and was easier than using a PC anyway. Finally, there's been a few instances where I had to re-pair because I was getting weird inputs - once on Gamecube and once on Genesis. In both cases it was obviously messed up upon boot, so it's not like it interrupted gameplay or anything.

I'm re-doing my retro game room setup in the future and all the old controllers are going into storage. I'm planning on using this going forward for everything.

Typically, they use CR-39. Which, according to wikipedia, is a polycarbonate but shouldn’t be confused with the generic term polycarbonate.

But yeah it’s still naturally almost completely UV opaque so this whole post is just pedantry for the sake of the AliExpress thread pass-time.

Geez guys if you want to live dangerously cheap sunglasses are not the way to go.

How about a $3 menstrual cup? Pretty colours. For those not in the know, menstrual cups are usually at least 10X that price so this is suspiciously cheap.

But if you want to live dangerously with something that doesn't go inside you, how about medical equipment? A CPAP mask for $30, about 1/4 the price you'd pay from a medical professional. What's the worst that could happen? Suffocation???

Lol, your mouth opens and you breathe through that. Also lol at judging things based on how expensive they are from predatory medical supply shops; aspirin should cost $10 a pill because that's how much hospitals bill you.

I don't know if you are seriously looking for an answer on "how can these things be this cheap direct from China" or if you're just making a light-hearted post about things that go on the body and we would prefer not to be toxic/dangerous.

I think it's the latter, but just in case it's the former: The shop you'd usually get these from are paying approximately the same price as you are on Aliexpress (plus bulk discounts). Then they add on their overhead (real estate, sales salaries, marketing, management, QA, legal, 10% profit margin...) and you get that 4x to 10x increase.

The problem for you as a consumer is, you really want that QA and legal to do their work, to avoid getting malfunctioning or dangerous products, but you don't want to pay the rest of the overhead. Hence we sit here, taking chances on Aliexpress.

The worst that is likely to happen is that the fittings will be loose and you’ll get an untight seal so your god damned cpap won’t stop blowing air at my face while I try to sleep

I think that's a clone of a resmed kit, only it looks like they've cut out a few of the fitting features. If the mask seal is good (which would be my first expected point of failure) it'll probably work ok.

The CPAP masks are decent and so are the CPAP machines themselves. Here in Canada you need to get a sleep study and pay 4-10x more for a CPAP machine since it's a bit of a racket. I just ordered the machine and titrated it myself, worth every penny and have been able to sleep well for the past few years.

Yeah, they have those. Under :fivecbux: BUT maybe not depending on where you live. I bought this one before, https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33032572848.html but if I change my location to USA the page isn't visible. loving american nanny state keeping you from buying discount medical goods.

I actually did buy one, lol. I use nasal pillows, but I wanted a backup face mask for times when my nose is irritated or completely clogged. I got the BMC FM2 https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004557155866.html . BMC seems like a legit company, just not one that sells in Canada. The silicone doesn't feel quite as plush as the local ones, seems more like the masks my mom had 20 years ago.

And of course part of the discount is that this is the fitting guide. If it doesn't fit, gently caress you. Unlike a proper respiratory therapist place that will let you try out several masks without charge if the first one doesn't fit right.

I know this is the aliexpress thread, but I picked this Havit board up for $40 on amazon a week back and it's decent.
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B085ZDXGZW
I mostly got it for the rounded over spacebar and PBT keycaps but the unusual layout is alright, too. The main downsides are no lighting and soldered MX Red switches (I prefer clicky). A lot of the higher end boards have hotswap sockets now so you can pull out switches and put in different kinds, but even those are $100 or sometimes less, depending on what you're buying.

I don't know, I mostly got it for the space bar, the main four keyboards on my desk are standard TKL layout. It's not a bad compromise for the folks who insist on a numpad but they used key profiles on the numpad section that don't align with the rows on the normal board but on a numpad, so it sticks up a little on the bottom rows. I think the denser cherry 1800 style layouts are probably more sensible if you want a numpad all of the time but also need to mouse a lot and not strain your wrist.

If I was using the board regularly I'd probably be fine until I used the numpad for insert/home/end/delete or print screen which I use pretty regularly. I used one of these Northgate Omnikey Ultras in the 90s for a few years so I'm sure I'd get used to it (not my picture but I have a couple of these somewhere that need repairs):

Yeah, it's kinda arbitrary on what you can buy without proof of prescription. CPAP stuff is hard to get a hold of - even just simple velcro straps that I could probably make for $2 - but I bought an O2 regulator no problem so it kinda makes no sense.

Though come to think of it I guess those regulators are used for other tanks such as for welding gases so those aren't really medical exactly.
