drat, the thread is talking about my two favorite vns ever, raging loop and 428 shibuya scramble. those games kind of ruined vns for me, nothing else I tried has ever equaled them, can people offer suggestions for similar games? and not the really big ones like the nonary games, I already know about them. What I really liked was the multiple timelines and bad endings, I found that really interesting.

it's really frustrating that apparently 428 has a prequel/sequel, but it was never translated.

It's neat enough, not hitting the highs of timeloopy weirdness of your Uchikoshis, but what does? The FMV presentation is cool, and it's a nice short little burst of a thing. I enjoyed the few hours it took to play through it, but I'm a sucker for FMV games.

A JP streamer I've followed for a long time recently finished his playthrough of Machi which was like 40 streams long at a leisurely pace, I didn't actively follow it (it kinda made me want to play it myself) but the style and semi-absurd vibe was definitely super recognizable as Shibuya Scramble except made in 1998.

I should get around to trying it, but time... and backlog...

I’m almost done with 428 Shibuya Scramble, but I have a few more questions before I give the game a final grade and move on. I’ve finished the Normal End, True Ending, the 22 mini stories and finished both Susune and Canaan’s longer side stories.

Spoiler-free guides tell me there is also a “Mean-Clean” ending (pretty sure this is a gimmick) and a “Conspiracy” ending (not sure about this one.)

Finally, is there any purpose to the Labyrinth besides trolling you for making a wrong choice in Minorikawa’s route?

Thanks!

NANI?

Those are joke endings you absolutely have to look up how to get because no one would ever figure them out normally.

The maze is also just a joke area though theres some funny things there if you explore it properly iirc and maybe a trophy in the PS version.

Final thoughts on 428 Shibuya Scramble: This is a very good visual novel. I can see why it is so highly regarded and I’m disappointed that a sequel is unlikely to happen at this point. I’m giving it a 9 overall.

I haven’t done this before, but for this VN I have to break my grade down further.

Editing: 10. 428 is the best edited VN I have ever played. The dialogue was snappy and a plot that becomes surprisingly complex is consistently explained in a way that makes it easy for the reader to follow along.

Story: 9. What starts out as a straight forward story about a kidnapping plausibly turns into a thriller with the fate of the entire planet potentially at risk. It does rely a bit too much on some insane coincidences to move the plot forward, but the reader is having so much fun that it doesn’t matter.

Susune’s side story: 10. I don’t hand out many 10’s but it’s appropriate here as well. Yes, the plot was predictable but was it so well done that it succeeded in having the emotional impact that was clearly intended. I was in tears at the end.

Characters: 9. Likeable and memorable without exception. Even the cold Osawa is portrayed overall as a sympathetic character who experiences growth throughout the story. Minorikawa is one of my new favorite VN characters.

Interface: 4. I’m guessing if you’re still reading, you knew this was coming. 428 has the most frustrating user interface I’ve ever seen. There are joke tips that contain one word jump points critical to moving the story forward and you better be careful trying to clear that last keep out/bad end because it’s definitely possible to erase an hour’s progress while searching for the way forward. The inability to fast forward through dialogue already seen is inexcusable. Looking back, I’m glad 428 does not have a Great Ace Attorney style story mode because the temptation to use it would have been almost irresistible at a few points.

Overall, it’s a great game and a good entry point into the genre to recommend to people who have never played a VN before.

Fight for all that is beautiful in the world

You know what else is hosed up from a UI/quality of life standpoint?

The early Ace Attorney games have no text log, or backchat at all! You cannot ever look at past dialogue again. I was thrown off guard by this when I was recently replaying the trilogy

Is the new anime any good after finishing the VN?

The anime is brutally unpleasant to watch, because it is about a bunch of gruesome murders and they hit way harder in a visual medium. That said, I saw it when I was like five or six books into Umineko, and personally I thought it did a great job tying some stuff together. That said, I'm probably one of its bigger fans here, and even I literally wouldn't bother watching it unless you've finished Higurashi and are deep enough into Umineko for you to stop and go "wait, what the gently caress?!" about some clearly Higurashi-adjacent stuff.

It's gratuitous and disturbingly violent and probably a fair bit longer than it needs to be, but it fits together with a lot of small incidental stuff well enough that it was obviously planned and implied on some level. You probably wouldn't miss it if it didn't exist, though.

Related question about Higurashi Gou/Sotsu and Higurashi 1-8: I've actually pretty much completely forgotten what happened to Hanyuu - wouldn't Rika going to St Lucia trigger L5 in a bunch of people? Or was that solved somehow?

Dr Kool-AIDS
Mar 26, 2004

I only watched Gou but IMO it was more mean-spirited than the original in addition to being more graphic, and that's true without even mentioning the very bad episode that I hate and think was gore porn and disrespectful to the characters (which may sound dumb since it's his characters to do with what he wants but it's still how I feel about it). Tbf a lot of people might think the original is hosed up for being a story about bad things happening to kids, so I get that everyone's line is different and mine's as arbitrary as anyone else's.

Yeah, this episode literally made me ill. That said, I'm pretty sure that same method of death happens in Higurashi more than once. It just hits way worse when you can see and/or hear it. I don't know what the current streaming situation is with it, but when it was airing (censored) in Japan, the version that Hulu got same-day was uncensored.

I'd really recommend trying to find the censored version if you give it a try. And when there's half an episode that's just a black screen, maybe cover your ears too, and be thankful for the warning.

My complaints are more about how it was presented than what happened, so I'm not sad that it was censored. Yeah she was disemboweled many times but it was mostly (always? I feel like I remember her asking not to be sedated so she'd remember it one time but I don't remember if the text continued through the process) "off camera" even in the text because she didn't remember it and to preserve the mystery for the reader. Otherwise I think the most gruesome things in the VN were Shion torturing Satoko to death and maybe her fight with Rika in Meakashi, which were both admittedly pretty unpleasant.

I mean also to be fair only about 85% of the screen in that scene is censored. Maybe 90%? Definitely not a pure black screen.

Paradise Killer, maybe? The setting's pretty outlandish, but in many aspects it's "what if Danganronpa but more". Not really a visual novel, though. There's also Nine Doors, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, but I never played that one all the way through so can't guarantee its overall quality.
