The issue with that is that the tight view of the top down game is *why* it's possible to run the war like it does. Otherwise building infrastructure would be impossible once someone got a good rifle and a vantage point unless you made some honest to God 30 mile deep WW1 style trench networks.

Hell Let Loose is not Foxhole, but it has some semblances of infrastructure management and lots of emergent mechanics around setting your own spawn points and hunting down enemy spawn points, while still being primarily a first-person shooter with 50v50 games on large maps. I'm having a lot of fun with it at least.

God, you vindictive bitch, why can't I ever have any "me" time

If there is still another human being on Earth that played or still plays Mabinogi, the grand "oh god please come back" update that landed today just straight axed literally 98.7% of the "use a skill to get better" grind, which was one of the only enjoyable, somewhat zen parts of the game. Now you can be a grandmaster anything inside of an hour and probably a grandmaster everything inside a few days so you can get right back to the janky combat in the lovely longwinded dungeons against perpetually imbalanced enemies to grind for rare drops that might evaporate in a puff of failure on attempted use.

It's like if Warframe just gave you almost every frame for free on login, no wait timers for construction, all equipment automatically hits max level after 1 mission, mods only take 1 infusion to fully upgrade, and all the open-world stuff is locked behind getting all the way through the galaxy map (but you still have to go through the relic crap to get forma). Desperately fast-tracking the fun part so you can get to the lovely part as soon and regularly as possible.

https://massivelyop.com/2022/04/27/rumor-leakers-claim-elder-scrolls-onlines-zos-is-working-on-a-star-wars-mandalorian-mmo/

Zenimax is apparently making a new Star Wars MMO that will be Mandalorian themed. How they started working on this 4 years ago when the show only came out in 2019 is beyond me.

It will be Star Wars Galaxies 2, but you can only play as a Bounty Hunter. The entire game is an escort quest to bring baby Yoda to our favorite Star Wars locales.

I think a lot of game companies start out making a more generic thing and then, later on, pivot to a thing they think is better. I could imagine them making a sci-fi MMO and then pivoting to make it Star Wars/Mandalorian.

It got updated. Unfortunately the updates were basically the opposite of what anyone ever wanted for the game, predictably people got mad, and Wollay disappeared again never to be heard from.

I never played Cube world, but stories of it seem like the developer was someone who had a potential new minecraft mega hit on their hands but they couldn't avoid letting negative comments about their game affect them then they absolutely despised everyone who played it and left, then came back for a spite-update because people were still playing it.

How far off am I?

I think it's more that they lost faith in their project and pivoted. I recall them mentioning mental health or stress or something like that affecting them because of the unexpected popularity and they went offline for a long time to cope.

MonkeyforaHead

It definitely seemed like a misguided pivot in direction wrought of mental health and confidence issues and spending multiple years developing the update entirely in a bubble, as opposed to some bizarre passive-aggressive decision to deliberately spite the community. I'd even say there's a non-zero chance he'll show up again several years down the line with another surprise update but that's a very close to zero chance.

I am honestly of the opinion people like this need to build their passion project with minimal feedback or only a trusted small set of people who share the same vision. Like in the old days people would honestly say "The vision of my game is X" and bam your not getting feature X. Now a days you get an insane amount of feedback and most people only post if its negative or so cutting edge its a gamble and a risk to add said feature.

Babe Magnet
Jun 2, 2008

"take no feedback and stay true to his vision" is basically what he did, though. it just seems that his vision kinda sucked?

the update added a bunch of insane poo poo I can't imagine anyone was asking for, like the world now being a bunch of tiny biomes/zones but all of your gear, items, and stats except for tiny 0.1% permanent upgrades you have to grind for is tied to the biome/zone and you have to redo everything every time you step into the forest 20 feet away (which led to things like immediately losing your new boat in the middle of the ocean or glider while coming down from a mountain, because it's an item and therefor tied to the previous biome). And at the same time, a bunch of stuff was removed, like levels and skill trees and XP altogether, those cool fortress dungeons, the ability to even fight something a couple levels higher than you (level gap too big = invincible enemy), etc. It was a step down in basically every way. It even looked worse.

Like yeah taking on too much feedback is a danger, but I don't know if that's what happened here lol. The rumors of the beta being so drastically different and worse from the alpha because of spite are, of course, nonsense, but you can kind of see where someone dumb could get the idea.

I feel for him though, if he was the kind of person who hated being the center of attention, the blowup from your passion project would have been a nightmare. Whoever advised him to sell the alpha did not do him any favors, either. It's much harder to tell people to kick rocks when you're taking their money.

Yeah, GW2 is very good, just demands too much time so I had to stop. SoT is amazing, yae, but I have PTSD from losing a rare shark and I quit. Deep rock Galactic I purchased at halloween sale.

I'll give it a proper try soon come the holidays :)

Deep Rock Galactic is great, but you really need at least one other person to play. It really sings when you have a core group of 3 other players you can play with consistently, but I haven't had good luck with pickup groups.

I'm actually surprised by this because by and large DRG's community tends to be pretty good, or at least competent and willing to work together. If you run off on your own and don't ping/listen to pings then people can get bitchy but by and large it tends to be shockingly non toxic for the kind of game it is.

I run almost entirely pugs because I can't wear headphones often and I very very rarely have an issue even on more difficult missions.

It's not an MMO but I've found Barotrauma to be a game where strangers actually talk and coordinate and the game allows for some very interesting and unique (if janky) coop interactions, so I prefer it to the modern MMO. Playing a medic can scratch that healer itch too, also there's a mod called neurotrauma which adds an insane amount of medical depth regarding organs, body parts, surgeries, and different drugs and conditions, which I haven't gotten my head around yet.

You can log out at almost any point while unlocking the gryphon and login again months or years later.

(I also didn't finish the gryphon unlock because I'm lazy and mostly do raids/strikes/fractals/wvw where you can't use it, but it takes 3-5 hours total or something)

It is the gold total required which is the timewall for me.

To gather the gold I'd have to do dailies and poo poo so aye, I logged off for the foreseeable future and will resume the game when I feel I've more time to pour into it.

But it is -the good mmo-. People who like mmos should play it, period.
