OK, I hope nobody (particularly Seventh Arrow) minds, but I've just added links to each write-up they've made in here to the OP, for quick and easy access. Figured it might be handy as a quick reference, for when sale seasons hit

Ah good, I'm glad I wasn't overstepping there! Anyway, personally I've already bought enough this sale I feel, but I'll definitely be revisiting SA's list (and other recs posted in here) next month, once the end of year sales hit. There's always a need for more stealth games, in the world! (and in my Steam account)

The first three are all really good, Conviction I think is better than it gets credit for but still not all that great lol, it’s fine if you want a more action-oriented stealth game but it’s nothing like the previous games and nowhere near as good. I enjoyed Blacklist a lot too, you can play it like the old games, like Conviction, or as pure tactical action like Rainbow Six or something but it rewards you most for playing pure stealth. But it’s been like 10 years since I played that one probably so I don’t know how well it holds up Punished Chuck fucked around with this message at 20:25 on Nov 29, 2022 |

Nutmeg posted:loved that poo poo fr Yeah, that was an amazing feature. It's actually in Intravenous too, which is a recent top-down stealth game. ('meh' writing, but fun gameplay IMO) I think that's the only game since Splinter Cell that's featured the scroll wheel walk speed mechanic, which is a shame. EDIT: Chuck Buried Treasure posted:The first three are all really good, Conviction I think is better than it gets credit for but still not all that great lol, it’s fine if you want a more action-oriented stealth game but it’s nothing like the previous games and nowhere near as good. Conviction is at it's best when played coop though - the coop campaign is actually pretty good, with a fun ending sequence

A Plague Tale: Requiem "There are many joys in life, but one of the greatest is seeing a man devoured alive by an army of angry rats" - Mahatma Gandhi Ok, so Gandhi didn't really say that but I'm willing to bet he would have if he had played A Plague Tale: Requiem! And let me just say, if you love the sound of high-pitched squeaking, do I have the game for you! In it, you once again follow the adventures of Amicia and Hugo De Rune as they embark on the worst vacation ever. I don't really want to go into specific story beats but one thing in this game that you can set your watch to is that if you encounter a place that has laughter, sunlight, and happy people frolicking hither and yon, then it's a sure sign that it will soon be replaced with darkness, disease, and rats eating people hither and yon. I found both Amicia and Hugo to be utterly insufferable human beings and although there's a story explanation to it (sort of), one has to marvel at the protagonist - the one you're supposed to sympathize with - murdering people with no-brakes, balls-out, sith-lords-are-afraid-of-me levels of aggression. Hugo also whines incessantly about going to an island that he sees in his dreams, and also whines when he gets there whenever the island paradise doesn't live up to his dream. Now I'm going to get into the stealth in a moment but I think it's important to note that APT:R is a narrative game first and foremost. It prizes the story above else, and the gameplay will be whatever it needs to be in order for the story vehicle to get to the garage. At my recollection, you have: stealth sections, exploration, puzzles, chases, interminable cutscenes, combat, rat combat, and long sections of dialog while walking/running. You have to know going into this game that there's a lot of shell to crack before you get to the stealthy center. So how is the stealth? Well there is a lot more of it than in Innocence, but what is there is quite straightjacketed. Although Amicia has a lot more tools at her disposal for dealing with guards, there are more than a few sections where you're expressly forbidden from using them. For example, there's a section where you (and Hugo, and a new character named Sofia) have to sneak into a temple. You can become de facto invisible when hiding in tall grasses, and have to resort to distractions in order to go from grass patch to grass patch. Even when you have sections where you have all your tools at your disposal, the guards seem to be keenly aware whenever one of them is dispatched. Even if you take out someone perched out high on a watchtower with a sling, a number of guards will be immediately alerted to this fact and will start making a beeline in your direction. Maybe that makes it more challenging, but a core concept in stealth gaming is being able to silently whittle down guards one by one until their numbers are critically narrowed. I think most of the time, whenever possible, players are going to get through stealth sections by just finding ways to get guards eaten by rats. Like Innocence, there are levels where zillions of rats have decided to move in. The rats are afraid of light, but are otherwise utterly voracious. So this will lead to situations where a guard will be walking through the area with a torch to keep the rodents at bay. However, you can use your sling to douse his torch and watch his immediate surprise as the chittering vermin overwhelm him and devour him whole. There are also (strictly regulated) sections where Hugo can control the rats and direct them to the guards as long as there are no nearby fires or other sources of light. So what I'm saying is that for the most part, you're probably going to whittle the guards down via ratpocalypse as much as possible and then sneak via conventional methods for the rest. There are some notable improvements since APT:I, the controls have been tightened up, at least on PC. Now Amicia can use every alchemical component with her sling, and they've added a new element, tar, which can help intensify fires - you can also stick the tar to enemies and light them on fire, leading to horrible screams that will either unnerve or delight you, depending on your psychological makeup. A crossbow has been added - this can take out most armored guards, but they're rather stingy with bolts. Ledges are marked with white frosting, which I guess is now action-adventure game signposting for "you are permitted to jump here." As with Innocence, you have companions with you for much of the game and this can be a real annoyance. When it's just Lucas it's not so bad, but there's an extended section where it's you, Hugo and Sofia and it really drags the proceedings down. Having to hold Hugo's hand all the time slows you down and Sofia gets in your way constantly. It's like having a 5'4" housecat. This also impacts stealth because, although the guards don't 'see' your companions, every time you want to get up on a ledge, they do an animation where Amicia has to lift Hugo up and then lift herself up - and in sections where timing is tight, this is just enough to get spotted. I noticed that if a guard's lantern gets smashed while they're walking in tall grass, the grass will catch fire, which I thought was a neat touch. Finally, because you spend so much time crouched in tall grass trying to avoid guards there's a lot of whispered dialog, which might drive you insane. If I didn't know better, I'd say that the publisher is planning to release a playlist of Requiem ASMR. All in all, I'd say that the stealth has improved from APT:I but you have to go through a lot to get to it. The story is a lot better, but the game wants to be a lot of different things to tell it. If you're ok with that, then Requiem merits a cautious recommendation - maybe wait a while for the bugs to iron out and maybe see if it goes on sale. **ADDENDUM** - just a note that in the first half of the game there's a quest to save a herbalist. It even gives you the objective of saving him. However, doing so is quite difficult and even if you do, he bugs out and will not speak to you and the door to the next area will not open. So yes, you're supposed to let him die even though you have an objective to save him. Is it a bug? Is it the developers trolling you? Who knows! Hopefully this will save you a bunch of searching. i gotta say i really hate that ledges and stuff are all outlined now lol. especially in a modern game. if im not supposed to be able to jump or climb there, then make it so I can't, don't invisible wall me lol. it's gotten so bad they had to start doing the outlining because otherwise nobody would know where to go, since they're not about to design a level that looks like it's linear the same way an old 2001 game would do it.

Going back to play Human Revolution because I never finished it. The stealth is just okay. Not enough variety, enemy intelligence or environment interaction to make it that interesting. It also distracts me every time how loud and brutal the nonlethal takedowns are despite not permanently hurting the enemies or making any detectable noise. Not really related to stealth, but it has the best gamification of persuasion I can think of. It's actually based on your knowledge of the character and how well you understand the dialogue. But I did just get off Oblivion so that makes it seem better in comparison lol

The animations are overlong and absurd. Better leave this guy alive with every limb irreparably shattered. However I liked that they never failed. I feel like in every other stealth game with context takedowns you’ll inevitably have flubs deep into an encounter where your guy punches someone in the back of the head instead of doing the takedown you expected. I also liked how the cover stealth system worked a lot. Though when i realised vents just go around 90% of tough stealth or fighting sections that fell off a bit for me. I still have a lot of fondness for the game because I did the no alarms or kills run in it as basically my first stealth game experience ever. And that’s what made me realise I love stealth games.
