I played the demo for a bit and my impressions are pretty positive. The UI is kind of awkward, and the demo took me about 2hrs, which I think is like 1/4 of locations in the game. Writing is ok, not amazing but sufficient. I would like to have some more characterization, couldn't care much about the different NPC, but maybe there's more in the full game.

I imagine one playthrough would be under 10 hours. But the amount of flexibility I saw looks pretty neat. When you load up a game and see the main menu screen with a bunch of stars on it, each of those stars represents one big thing or choice you can make that affects your path, and there are a lot of those. As far as builds/archetypes go, you can of course be a fightymans and just punch your way through obstacles, you can convince and/or recruit other people to do things for you, or you can be a sneaky lockpickingmans and collect keycards and quest items avoiding combat and finding hidden passages. Hacking/repairing and crafting stuff also seems to be it's own big thing that I haven't tried much.

I think it's a pretty good deal for the price and an interesting cool little game, especially now with the launch discount.

You may already be familiar with the tile set mod packs from Michał “Mayday” Madej and Jacob "Ironhand" Bowman. Together, their efforts are creating an all-new tileset featuring brand new pixel art by artists Carolyn Jong and Neoriceisgood. quote:

IXION combines city building, survival elements and exploration, into a thrilling space opera as you explore the stars. Propelled onwards through a perilous journey, you are the Administrator of the Tiqqun space station, charged with finding a new home for humanity.

Keeping the station sound and flying will require a deft hand and strategic thinking, as you are constantly pulled between maintaining hull integrity, bringing in new resources and managing power consumption.

What choices will you make when confronted with impending disaster? What will you discover out there in the dark?

This was a big surprise for me, I only found out it existed a few days before release and ended up grabbing it... only around 4~ hours in so far but I love it. It ticks all my boxes, but I'm sure it's probably going to have some sort of balance related issues to sort out or whatever. Technical performance is great so far, looks great, sounds even better. I really like the music and overall sound design. I was honestly kind of shocked on how polished it feels, it's a full package. I'm so used to this genre of games being in a pre-alpha state at launch that it feels weird getting a complete game.

It feels kinda like a mix of elements of Frostpunk and Startopia, but is quite a bit different atmosphere-wise. Similar to Mechanicus, it just feels like a really tightly designed, pretty and atmospheric game. Gonna wait till I get a bit further before making any larger judgements, but this has actually taken me away from Dwarf Fortress for a bit.

Not sure how badly the release timing is going to affect it getting buried by the algorithm, hopefully it does well!

Edit: TBH this kind of reminds me of like... Reunion or Imperium Galactica in the structure. Like a narrative based space strategy survival game that pushes you along with a mix of scripted events and basic resource management. I remember loving those games and something about this brought them to mind, even though IXION is radically different in the minute-to-minute gameplay.

Uh so basically in the prologue so there's a corny Tech Idealist Billionaire Guy who gives a really over the top speech and has a supremely dumb hairstyle, that's in the trailer and almost put me off the game... but I think it's intended to seem corny and bad? Immediately after it plays, their entire plan goes tits up so spectacularly that you can't really consider the guy or anything his project did "good" really unless they are able to dramatically swerve the plot later. It's more like "whoops we really hosed up super bad" and trying to pick up the pieces of what went wrong.

Also seems like some of the hints they give with the other characters are making me think there's more shady poo poo going on then the game flat out tells you up front. Seems very sketchy. The writing in Mechanicus was solid enough that I'm hoping they do something interesting with this by the end, but who knows. Maybe it ends up that there's a different Space Musk that saves the day with the power of the free market and cryptocurrencies? Who knows.

That the game punishes you so heavily for scheduling your workers too many hours makes me feel like it has already diverted pretty heavily from the typical Musk mentality, though!

Not sure how much of this was in trailers and whatnot so being intentionally vague in case this would be spoilers I guess.

That being said it wouldn't register my controller so I just played a few matches on keyboard and returned because that's way too annoying to have a game not recognize probably the most common PC controller in the world (xbox series x style pc controller). Too bad

It's mixed now - seems the consensus is that there are some real glaring technical issues and streamlining some of the mechanics, from the original, made the game less enjoyable. It seems that people don't seem to understand what made a lot of the old games fun - a lot of remakes I have looked forward to over the years have been horrible: Master of Orion (1/2), anything related to Star Control, and now this.

If you want to see a good modern-ish remake, look at Ur-Quan Masters - basically the original game but just improved in every way (including VA from the 3DO version). Or maybe am I now old and view these games coloured with too much nostalgia.

If Rick and Morty improv humour is something you enjoy, this game is really enjoyable. The gunplay seems very okay but it seems to open up once you get more weapons. Just be warned though - the humour is very specific and there are some really dark scenes, some stuff that will make you question the sanity of the writers and some real zingers.

To expand on this, the game makes you sit through multiple VERY long sitcom scenes in your house that are unskippable. It's being intentionally maddening.

I've been really surprised by the movement mechanics and how much it lets you sequence break. There are a handful of spots that if you get to early the suit robot will comment on how you cheated. Of course, there are also a bunch of sequence breaks it didn't account for and you're just stuck unless you reload :v:
