I'm somewhere between 3 and 4 hours into Callisto Protocol (Currently rotating the SHU). Narratively it's early, but gameplay wise I have most of the basic combat tree unlocked. I'm really enjoying it thus far.

The first few horde combat encounters had me going "what the gently caress" and getting frustrated with the designers like the Gamespot guy, but then I got a handle on the mechanics so deaths felt more like "Yeah, I shouldn't have done that" than "That was unfair." The combat system is quite unique, and as such takes some learning, but is really fun. It's very chunky and brutal, especially with the haptics. 1 on 1 fights are no challenge, but juggling enemies takes a good amount of situational awareness. You have to think a little to manage a full group and not burn through too many resources. I'm playing on the middle difficulty

The atmosphere and setting are exactly what I hoped for, very much in the Alien vein of industrial sci-fi. The audio work is especially nice. I like that the level design feels like real locations with logical floorplans and a fair amount of side paths that are always good risk/reward gambles.

I'm only a third of the way into the fastest runtimes and a fifth into the longest, so maybe it will come apart. But if it maintains this quality then it'll be among my favorites this year.

I started the game on fidelity graphics, but it had noticeable drops so I switched to performance. It's been running smoothly since then. Aside from running at a lower (but still clean) internal resolution, the only real visual loss I can see is in volumetrics, which are clearly running at a somewhat lower resolution. It still looks really nice though, a fair trade for the smooth 60fps.

Does it have any of the accessibility features, and/or did you turn any on/off?

One thing that's kind of weird is the amount of Korean lettering in the game. Every chapter title always has 캘리스토 프로토콜 (Callisto Protocol, in English, just written with the Korean alphabet) above it. Also, some areas of the prison use Korean as the primary signage language, with English subscript. However, other areas don't use Korean in the signage at all. None of the characters are Korean and none of the themes are Korean. I know Krafton was the publisher, but other stuff they've developed didn't have superfluous Korean elements. I guess someone in Striking Distance just thought the alphabet looked cool? (I mean, fair enough. It does).

BeanpolePeckerwood posted:

There's an accessibility section of the menu that I just popped in to check. I haven't used any, but there are a few visual options for various color blindness or visual impairments, as well as some gameplay assists which include auto-aim, auto-dodge, melee-assist, button-hold assists, and QTE auto-complete. I'm not going to use them, but from the descriptions, it seems like it would virtually play the game for you if everything was fully enabled (Auto-dodge can dodge all melee attacks without any button press if you want, auto-aim can snap to weak points and track them). There are also a bunch of UI settings that let you change the size and persistence of individual UI elements and toggles for various screen effects (I think for nausea).

It's not as extensive as Naughty Dog or Santa Monica's features but it still looks fairly robust.

The game made a big point of Amicia freaking out over having to kill someone, to the point that I felt real bad putting her through it and I tried to avoid killing enemies. But in some cases you just had to and she didn't really make any more comments about it, I guess she got over it real quick.

Reading the spoilers for the 2nd game and haha jeez. Is there any setup for a 3rd game?

Outer Worlds was competently developed, it was just poorly directed. Outer Worlds 2 stands a chance at being good if they don't let Boyarski and Cain direct it.

Yeah but the marketing didn’t care about that it was wall to wall ‘Remember New Vegas?!’ but they forgot to add ‘We hope not because this isn’t anywhere near as good!’ in the next line and welp

the second game’s stinger shows macula in modern day but I’m not holding my breath

the sneering pointlessness of requiem’s story really can’t be overstated. it has barely any theme or message behind its cruelty, it’s just devising new ways to brutalize these kids every couple of hours until credits. it’s actually kind of novel - true “misery porn,” where the means and end is the depiction of misery

Parasite is easily among my top 10 favorite movies. Can't praise it enough. Probably would put it just behind Memories of Murder in Bong Joon Ho's oeuvre though.

Just got the 6th of 9 story-related achievements in Callisto. Dunno if those map out evenly enough to say I'm 2/3rds of the way through the main game. In terms of average playtime, I'd say it probably does. In terms of narrative progression... well I guess there just isn't much story to this game. Duking it out with greasy mutants is still fun though. Not sure I understand the critical scathing the game is getting (PC performance woes aside).

The visuals in Scorn are so, so good so I happily went through the early areas that barely had anything that counted as actual gameplay. Even so, I gave up and uninstalled it as soon as I reached a point where I couldn't just scoot past the enemies and actually had to engage with the literal worst first-person combat I've ever experienced

That was bound to ruffle feathers, my bad. It's an entertaining flick that I really enjoyed, but historically speaking there are so. many. good films out there. I could say the same about Goodfellas. To put it simply, I don't feel like Parasite is even the best Korean film in the last five years, let alone enough to displace so many other amazing films, Korean or otherwise. The entire ordeal is just lazy clown ranking imo, 'normal'. But anyways, you asked how I felt about it and that was my feeling, I made about 3 dozen long groans, but it was nice to see some diversity recognized on the list, Daisies, Wanda, Get Out, etc, and the ones I mentioned previously.

The very end teases a new game set in contemporary times, but zero specifics. I'm confident in saying this is the last we'll hear of the characters they've developed so far, which is another element that makes it feel bleak to me

I reached the final part of the game and it checkpointed me at this stupid part where I was functionally poisoned, so I just died 5 seconds after respawning. When I realized restarting the level would involve 45 molasses paced minutes and redoing one of the worst boss fights in recent history I just dropped it and watched the ending on Youtube.

The game is absolutely stunning, and a few of the puzzles are sort of ok, but has literally nothing else going for it. The gameplay is awful, it's an absolute chore to play, there's no story as far as I could tell, it's such an absolute slog. It's a shame the ridiculously impressive visuals were wasted on such a bad game.

Callisto seems like one of the more divisive high budget/high profile games in recent memory.

veni veni veni
Jun 5, 2005

The other thing that pissed me off about Scorn was that it doesn't seem to have the built in failsafes that most games have. So, despite it being linear, it has limited resources that can stick you in an almost unwinnable situation. There was the aforementioned part that made me quit. Which was a part where you basically have to take poison damage to progress forward. But there is only one available heath machine. The game checkpointed me when I was almost dead and the only way to move forward was taking damage so it was game breaking. Then there was another point where I ended up at a sliver of health and could not find a health pickup for almost 90 minutes, meaning that a single hit from any enemy would kill me, for hours. It was like being stuck in hard mode without any recourse.

It's basically impossible to get a good read on it. Reviews seem on the mediocre end overall which is concerning. I can't find anyone really gushing about it, but some people seem to like it a lot more than others. I don't care if it's not the second coming of survival horror, but I can't figure out if I'm gonna feel ripped off if I buy it tbh.
