I would post this in the Dragongate thread, but I assume everyone reading that already has the DG Network, but this month's Korakuen shown featuring the Dream Gate match between Yuki Yoshioka and Masaaki Mochizuki, will be free.

Yeah, I was going to post that here too.

If you haven't seen Big Match Yuki yet, they're positioning him as the new young ace, and Mocchy's still the GOAT, so it'll be worth watching that match alone even if you don't check out anything else.

No captions for the show but based on context I *think* Ishida's unit is just an extension of Black Generation from Mexico, and that Kaz finally joined StrongHearts.

Watching the NOAH Ariake show from last month & man, Kojima looks so motivated he's now getting a decent push. I know we laugh at NOAH's position as the old man promotion but his run this year has really shown he can still go, and he even looks in better shape, he's a bit leaner. It's cool.

I wouldn't post this here but it's an MMA show by a wrestling company & the card is loaded with at least part-time wrestlers.

Yuki Kondo is a legit name in MMA, a former King of Pancrase at Middleweight, Light Heavyweight & Openweight. He fought in Pancrase, Pride, UFC, Sengoku. But he's also 47. But it still seems like a match that Izuchi is going to lose.
Minoru Tanaka hasn't done MMA since the days of Rings, 1998, & his record was 1-6 anyway, while his opponent hasn't fought since 2018 & hasn't won since 2010. But was a much better fighter.
Hikaru Sato had an OK MMA career as a journeyman but he's on a 3 (MMA) fight losing streak with his last win being in 2017, while Taisei Sekino has a 3-5 record with a 4 fight losing streak. They actually fought last year in a Lethwei (Burmese kick boxing) & Taisei won.
Hideki Sekine is a decent MMA fighter who is 12-6 & is against Dan Tamura from All Japan. This is brutal to be honest. Dan did judo & wrestling in high school but man, he's giving up 80 pounds to Shrek & buckets of experience
Yu Iizuka actually has a 1-1 MMA record. But he's against Daisuke Nakamura who is a veteran who fought for Pride, Deep, Strikeforce among many others, dating back to 2002.
Maya Fukuda I have no idea about her background. But Minori Kikuchi is a shootboxing & kickboxing fighter who hasn't done MMA but will probably kick her butt.

They didn't even give the wrestlers cans. I mean, none of their opponents are great, most of them are on the older side & have plenty wear on the tires but man. I really do not get the point of this, but I suppose GLEAT contract wrestlers losers to outsiders is keeping up the tradition of their wrestling shows...

ASUKA not being a nomination for Joshi GP is criminal. Also lol at Iyo Sky. That's still a very silly looking name.

Anyway, my picks from what they've nominated
Kento Miyahara - This is not a surprise if you've read pretty much anything I say about him.
Suzu Suzuki - Huh. I checked my spreadsheet & she's actually overtaken ASUKA (for now) after I finally caught up with the 5 Star GP. And I've still got the Shunma match from Prominence to catch, & there's a Violento Jack match from June that just got uploaded but I haven't seen yet. Between stuff like Suzu vs Sugiura, & against Giulia, it'll be hard for ASUKA to catch her now.
MUSASHI vs Fujita "Jr." Hayato remains my #1
Kongo. It has 2 of my favourite wrestlers, it has sleazy junior Tadasuke, it's a fun group. I might also say NEXTREAM though, they were great until the unit shakeup, between the ace, the future ace, & the 2 future junior aces. A power group, no fat
Drew Parker. It's probably Ospreay but man, Parker is a must watch. He had that rarest of things, a great scaffold match with Miyamoto, he then jumped to FREEDOMS & instantly fit in with the best deathmatch guys in the world. He's sick.
Yuma Anzai just got a win in the Real World Tag League teaming with Yuji Nagata against Kento Miyahara & Takuya Nomura & against Gungnir of Anarchy. He didn't get the fall but gently caress. In 12 matches he's had singles with Yuji Nagata, Minoru Suzuki & Naoya Nomura. That's 2 former world champions. It took Atsuki Aoyagi 6 months to be on the winning side in a match that didn't have another young boy on the opposite team, & there he was tagging with Kento & his brother Yuma. The most comparable rookie to get a win like that so early into his career is Jun Akiyama, being on the winning side with Baba & Fuchi vs Dory Funk Jr, The Patriot & Johnny Smith. They've strapped the rocket to him, as much as anyone does. Although my actual answer would be Takuma Fujiwara. Technically he debuted at the end of November 2021 but man, it counts this year.

There's some poo poo next week. A lot of the New Japan tag league tour, the conclusion of both All Japan & Stardom's own tag league competitions, Dragongate in Sapporo before coming to Tokyo for the penultimate Korakuen Hall show of the year (& this one is FREE TO WATCH and features a Dream Gate Title match, so if you aren't watching DG then this is a great show to check in on (there's also the official debut of Yoshiki Kato, who in his last exhibition outing actually beat veteran Punch Tominaga, which suggest another DG talent to be excited for), DDT have the finals of D-Ou as well as the weirdness of Jun Akiyama vs Joey Janela. Match of the week though? Sendai Girls in Osaka on Sunday morning/Saturday night. Big Hash vs ASUKA/Veny; the best women's wrestler of 2022 in the opinion of me against the figurehead of Sendai Girls now that Meiko Satomura is gone to learn to work the hard cam. That will be a must watch match & potential match of the year candidate if all goes well.

Most of my DG Youtube content is geared toward onboarding new fans, so if you folks want to get in on this, I have a whole playlist of primer stuff, with more being released in the next few days leading up to this show. The only ep that won't be released until after the Korakuen show is the one about DG Future rookies, because I won't have Kato's official profile picture until after he debuts. End of year DG is always a good time.

Would you be my new best friends?

Hey forkboy, incredibly minor thing but it looks like you have two of the World Tag League shows listed as Night 10?

Plus of course, thanks as always for compiling these!

Thanks for pointing that out, spot where I copy & pasted! Good to have it pointed out that because then the entire numbering gets out of whack and super annoys me

My too watch list is still 42, but some haven't aired and I haven't added today's shows to it. I might actually get it to under 5 by year end, excluding things that won't air in 2022, which I didn't expect. Finally accepting I don't have to watch every single undercard match and can just skip to the tasty stuff has been really useful.

Yeah at this point i've decided ignorance is bliss and haven't looked through vk for the last couple of weeks, otherwise there'd no doubt be some more random shows with one or two matches I want to check out and stick them in the tab group

Zack Sabre Jr. invited Jake Lee to be in next year's G1. The NJPW roster have to be loving with this dude lmao. He made a huge fool of himself by not being able to keep the G1 out of his mouth this year.

pretty fucking embarrassing to watch

The interesting thing here is that Judgement is in Korakuen again which is them downsizing the thing - not unprecedented as it was a Korakuen in 2019 when the two Sumo Hall shows were Peter Pan and Ultimate Party; but still notable considering it was the one Sumo Hall show this year. Its an interesting thing where DDT are the one bigger Japanese promotion to downsize their venue ambitions over the pandemic - NJPW ran the million Dome shows and Budokan for Anniversary show and whetever; and while a lot of that has moved on them doing Yokohama Arena again is an example of this: Stardom went from 1,200 in Korakuen being big news to running monthly arena PPVs (admittedly they have the backing of a megacorp; but so do DDT); NOAH went from Sumo Hall once a year in 2018+19 (and before that topping out in the Yokohama Bunka) to several Budokans a year and other big arena shows: DG have held fairly even; DDT have gone from Sumo Hall twice a year and sometimes bigger (Budokan once; Saitama Super Arena twice) to doing Peter Pan in Ota Ward. Their business hasn't exactly been hot (I think they were the second biggest faller in pandemic attendance - with the biggest being AJPW who used the opportunity to cut their house show loops right down because the profit margins were marginal; and who this year ran the Budokan and Ota Ward twice). There are interesting parallels with DG in that they were the big booming promotions of the 2000s; they are or have lost a lot of their initial gen wrestlers and the challenge is getting fans to buy into the next gen which DG seem to be doing a better job of: DDT losing their ace for much of the year doesn't exactly help them. Them being very comedy focused might be a factor: especially since they've had the same booker for many years so the next generation might just not relate to the sort of humour they do (the existing fans do though; Pheremones are over to them). People never seemed to really buy into the new generation to the same level as the older guys (a big pattern of the top drawing 2017-19 shows is that they have HARASHIMA, Ishikawa or Dieno in there from the older generations and the shows that focused on the Takeshita/Endo group didn't draw as much; plus UP 2019 had Omega on it) and now Takeshita isn't a regular and he's the guy they pushed the hardest; and people aren't exactly flocking to Korakuen to see the current group; it'll be interesting to keep an eye on.

Also might be a situation where following the NOAH purchase they assessed their wrestling properties and felt that prioritising NOAH (more traditional, closer to NJPW, bigger brand name amongst older fans) and TJPW (idol women's promotion; growing quickly) over DDT was the better idea: TJPW have a higher average attendance than DDT this year and while that's DDT running more shows outside Tokyo where they've never drawn its also a new thing. Even see it looking at where shows air: NOAH is a regular thing on Abema; I believe a couple TJPW Korakuens get on there; DDT get nothing anymore; its all Samurai shows for them and that wasn't the case before 2020 where Abema tried a weekly DDT TV show. Perhaps its all the power of Keiji Mutoh and he was the answer all along!

There's a lot of strong talent in DDT but there's a bunch of dead wood in the mid-card especially. I'm talking about Sasaki in particular who keeps getting primo spots despite the crowd reaction being lukewarm at best.

Takagi pushing the GCW guys didn't work as well as the talent brought in by Chris Brooke and Takeshita's connections. Cara Noir was an instant fan favourite compared to Janella's very up and down run in terms of crowd reactions.

Also incredibly the Sauna Boys have felt under pushed over the past few months, just at the moment when you want them to come out from under Takeshita's shadow.

It doesn't help that this year has felt like a bit of a downyear for DDT. Pheromones is a bad act & pushed me to just start skipping big chunks of shows, but even the headline stuff that I still dig: last year DDT was my #2 promotion based on MOTYC nominations with 26 from 36 shows. This year I have watched more than half of the D-Ou & have 25 MOTYCs from 43 shows seen. Obviously it's going to beat last year's raw total, but for example New Japan is up from 43 last year to 59 this year, All Japan is up to 35 this year from 18 last year, Stardom is up from 18 to 42, NOAH stand at 29 from 24 last year. Dragongate are the comparison point to me, in that last year I had 20, this year I have 19 (also Ice Ribbon has gone from 12 to 7 & SEAdLINNNG have gone from 17 to 10 but Ice Ribbon lost most of the top of the card between the end of last year & the middle of this year & SEAdLINNNG have a tiny core roster that has been blighted by injury & the loss of Nanae)

Like, there's been some really fun stuff in DDT (ditto DG), they've got a really promising crop of young boys (ditto DG, albeit I think Dragongate's crop of guys like ISHIN, Mochizuki Jr, Fujiwara, Minorita & Nagano are much better). There really should've been more crossover with NOAH & DDT outside of the Festival. They are under the same banner but for some reason NOAH are working with ZERO1 & Dragongate than anyone else. Weird from a business perspective.

Hey, at least DDT is doing better than Big Japan drawing 270 for their most recent Korakuen shot. (Actually, let's look at their 2022 in Korakuen: 645, 296, 212, 323 (for the Ikkitousen final AND Okami vs Astronauts), 252, 313, 237, 223, 230, 374, 381, 426, 289, 410, 325, 359, 270. Man, BJW struggle to break 250 fans if there's not a bigger deathmatch. Except for the first one of the year when they prematurely ended Nomura's Strong Title run. Hmmmmm)

Something I've been hearing a lot about lately is how most of the majors in Japan are huge in the Tokyo region, but don't draw as big nationally, while DG draws big gates all over Japan because they've been relentlessly touring national markets for years. I would say it's likely that Cyberfight is trying to focus on raising their national profile by having their biggest inside brand work with the biggest outside brand they can - and it doesn't hurt that Mochizuki, Eita, and Kondo appear on nearly every NOAH show I've seen this year.

To your point about young boys, one thing DG also does that a lot of others don't is throw their young boys into the deep end immediately out of the dojo. We get sporadic 5 minute exhibition dark matches, but as soon as they debut on the main roster, they all have distinct gear, characters, and styles. Like I already have a handle on what Yoshiki Kato's whole deal is, and he doesn't even officially debut until tonight.

Something fun popped up on VK today that I'd long since forgotten about, the NPH Legacy show (which is the Puro Hall of Fame people) from 10th October

https://vk.com/wall-4499945_23722

quote:

1. Isami Kodaka, Ken Ohka & TAMURA vs. LEONA, Oji Shiiba & Ryo Inoue
2. Koji Kanemoto & Tatsuhito Takaiwa vs. The Great Sasuke & Ultimo Dragon
3. Hikaru Sato vs. Naoya Nomura
4. Mitsuya Nagai, Shigehiro Irie & Soma Watanabe vs. Masayuki Kono, TAKA Michinoku & Yoshiaki Fujiwara
5. Kengo Mashimo vs. Jake Lee
6. Kento Miyahara, Kota Minoura & Shiro Koshinaka vs. Hideki Suzuki, Madoka Kikuta & Yuma Aoyagi

A fun card on paper at least, I'm definitely going to check out at least 3 matches (Mashimo vs Lee if they have their working puts on should be great)
