https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/religious-landscape-study/state/south-carolina/party-affiliation/

Aside from having an open primary, 50% of South Carolina Democrats self-describe as moderate or conservative, 15% higher than in other states. I tried spending some time compiling statistics on its Dems' beliefs compared to other states by issue, but there's another graph that breaks it down the opposite way -- what percentage with certain beliefs are Dems -- and got confused. Anyway, you can see for abortion and same-sex marriage, 53% of Dems think it should be legal, lower than almost any other state except Alabama, e.g. 69% in Minnesota, I'd say 16% gap is about right, feels like I should be referencing a national average for that. For "is helping the poor good?", it's better than others: 77% vs. 78% in Minnesota, 70% in Michigan, 68% in Georgia, 67% in Nevada, 71% in California, 74% in Alabama. For environmental regulation, same states as before, 67% vs. 80%, 69%, 72%, 69%, 74%, 61%.

edit: It feels like this should all be on a map or something, I don't know why it's not on an interactive map. Also, this is 2014 data, so at least there's that. Also, I would've liked to have known South Carolina Democrat positions on issues like policing and racial discrimination issues compared to other states

edit2: Michigan is 66% and 71% on same-sex marriage and abortion. Georgia is 56% and 62% on same-sex marriage and abortion. Nevada is 67% and 77% on same-sex marriage and abortion. California is 74% and 69% on abortion. Alabama is 50% and 52% on same-sex marriage and abortion. Tennessee is 47% on same-sex marriage and 56% on abortion.

I don’t have any hard data to add or anything but I spent nearly a decade in SC off and on during my teens and twenties and this tracks. The Democratic Party there is very much populated by a coalition of upper class old money types, very religious black churches, and the educated urban elites (in so far as you can call Charleston or Columbia urban)

They have all of the priorities and goals you’d expect from a coalition built from these communities and that’s a big part of why you’re finding SC Dems are weaker on abortion and higher on “helping the poor” but also why despite that high “help the poor” Bernie struggled to find purchase (because “helping the poor” is understood in the parochial sense that’s deeply intertwined with Christian religion)

The Green Party is like 75 bored old middle class people. If even a small percentage of Bernie Sanders supporters switched, they could easily take control of the party. They would benefit of a preexisting party structure but without the bosses or powerbases that destroy lefty Dems.

It's a hell of a lot better plan than getting really emotionally invested in Democrat primaries only to be shocked, shocked I say, when the Democrat you helped get into office suddenly starts acting like a Democrat in office.

It's an equally bad plan. There is no Green Party infrastructure, or it's minimal.

There's also many institutional challenges for third parties, that basically make it impossible to win in all but a few anomalous local districts. Primaries, at least, theoretically can win.

However, I will say there are blueprints for third party or independent success in some places. The Philly City Council, nonpartisan municipality races, people with strong local name recognition, etc.

It's extremely challenging, and corralling leftists to do just about anything is a massive undertaking. The reward of the Green Party name and structure is not likely worth the effort. All that said, I would be interested in fielding a viable third party challenge in winnable areas.

Nichael
Mar 30, 2011

honestly, if any of you live in challengeable local districts, and wanna run independent or third party, now is the time to do it. two years of solid work with a small electorate is the only path to doing this. but it always comes back to the "do work" thing and being prepared to do a ton of tedious and emotionally taxing stuff (like making a life list and calling through it for cash).

if you try to do entryism in the Green Party you will have to change its constitution and loudly be let it known that it’s a socialist party, not some social democratic thing that is perfect to be co-opted. or you could just start the red party, it will be easier.
