Let's not overlook that both the Biden and the Trump team had direct lines to the mods and got things removed. Only one of those teams was actually government at the time so I'll leave that one to the 1st amendment warriors currently screaming for impeachment because a dad, running for president, wanted his son's dick pics to be removed if possible. Taibbi clearly states this too in his bombshell thread, that nobody is gonna read because gently caress Twitter threads, and then glosses over it himself. This is genuinely so sad but they committed to being outraged so they can't back down anymore and all have to pretend it's a huge scandal

god please help me posted:Srsly wtf did puin tell musk in that one phone call months ago? literally everything about this stinks of some kind of Russia. Musk, the guy who tried to buy a decommed Dnepr and started SpaceX when he wasn't allowed to buy a decommed Russian ICBM through weapons dealers, then 20 years later interfered in the Ukraine war by loving with Starlink access after calling Putin not two months ago; Taibbi, a journalist who very famously lived in Russia for 10 years; internal Twitter emails regarding a fake scandal generated by the GOP throwing around a compromised iCloud hack that almost assuredly was obtained through Russian sources. Biden family heavily involved in Ukrainian business and constantly under attack for it by the GOP for years running now. Even if it's all coincidental, it's pretty loving coincidental. Was trying to make some sense out of this, so discussed with my GF that works in advertising and it all makes sense now. Right now is the most important time of the year for advertisers: between Black Friday and Christmas. They will be particularly looking out for the best return for each $ in whatever metric they care about (impressions, conversions, etc). Week-ends are also some of the days where most of the budget is allocated: that's when people shop for the holidays, either in stores or online. Also, the way the "news" was released: specific time, where people would go on the website and refresh a bunch of time. Then a second specific time after the "fact check". Whole bunch of people generating impressions waiting for it to release. Then the way the thing was released: slow trickle of tweets at an inconsistent timing: more people refreshing pages, generating more impressions. Basically what she thinks is going on is pretty simple: this time of the year is hyper critical for advertisers, this is where they make the most money in the year, by far. They look on the daily for the return on each of their ad buys and will adjust spending on the fly to maximize return. All of this Hunter Biden bullshit is going to give a big boost to these stats and make Twitter appear as a better investment for advertisers. It's probably a desperation move, because yeah, advertisers are scared of Twitter right now. So all the rest doesn't really matter to him: whether or not the story is important, whether this was an efficient way to deliver the story, whether releasing it on a friday makes any sense about making sure the actual story has reach. It's all about inciting advertising spending, nothing less, nothing more.

I was wondering about that too and from what I understand. there is a disconnect between the people making decisions about avoiding a platform/vendor and the people doing the actual ad buying. And the people doing the buying, more often than not regular employees at an agency, are the ones who just look at the return for every given $ in ad spend. They don't really care where the ad actually lands generally, if there's to be something about avoiding a platform or whatever, it would mostly be up to their customer.

They don't really care where the ad actually lands generally, if there's to be something about avoiding a platform or whatever, it would mostly be up to their customer. Wouldn't the behaviour you're noting above decrease ad return though? It would increase ad spend through more impressions / ad shows, but wouldn't it decrease the click-through rate (& consequent return metrics)? Sure, repeat exposure might lead to some people clicking through on the 3rd or 4th ad show... But I can't imagine it works well when people are refreshing a page on short notice - for them it's functionally the same advert! Re-targeting, etc. is shown to be efficient when it triggers a recall. I mean, if the number of impressions is all that matters, who is keeping twitter honest? Why wouldn't Elon just spin up a million bots that refreshe a page with a thousand ads every 20 milliseconds? Or just say "totes trust me, ad impressions are up 20% this week!"

It’s almost like “conservative voices” got moderated more because they lie more, spread more misinformation, make more threats, and incite more violence. Now I’m no nth level genius or nothing, but I think a more pressing issue might be why conservative ideology has become so tightly entwined with the above and how to rectify that, but introspection is for pussies and we’re here for dicks.

TulliusCicero posted:Un-loving believable It's just true that high profile conservative influencers and politicians post more disinformation and violative content on social media. There's been several studies run that show that they post more inciting content, more false claims, and more content that is likely to be aggressively moderated. And at the same time, they're also engagement hounds who take advantage of algorithmic amplification to spread this poo poo everywhere. The claim that there's left wing censorship just doesn't hold out. It's also laughable to claim that the Brazilian right is suppressed on social media when its largely successful today because of unfettered platforms. Sometimes a campaign's goal is brand awareness, so impression is more important. Sometimes they want to get a customer to their website or just even get someone to go through with a potential purchase already in their carts, in which case conversions would be more important. Even in that case, you rely on impressions to convert, which are at their more expensive around the holidays. Sorry if some of it is explained badly, just trying to relay my understanding of it
