It has multiple factors, but tech has been completely inundated in investment dollars in the last 10 years and there are simply not enough experienced SWEs around to keep up with the sector's growth, by a fairly large margin. When you see that Google reported 35% pure profit last year, it's not a surprise rich people want to shovel money at the tech sector, and some of it trickles down to the workers of the sector. Even then it's somewhat artificially low as the sector has historically been colluding to suppress wages. Edit : I mean if you want to redress the imbalance, those are public sector, you could just you know, make Google actually pay taxes. But that would make Number go down. Twitter wasn't run by complete morons - there were genuine business cases for a lot of that technical staff and Musk just burned it all down before he could have possibly taken the time to understand underlying justifications.
