I really thought Trump calling for the US Constitution to be torn up pursuant to him being reinstalled as president would have been a bigger topic of discussion.

It really is a shame that the Democrats abusively used their control of executive power to strong arm twitter into destroying democracy. It's just too bad there wasn't a big strong President known for being the best in power at the time.

As we all know, not having Hunter Biden's dick picks shoved into all of our feeds is what truly stole the election from the national belt holder, and hall of famer, Donald J. Trump.

Re: Georgia voting

The main change is that Georgia moved to electronic ballots a few cycles ago, which get printed in one machine and counted in another (this is “normal”) and not particularly egregious.

The cumbersome part is what’s called “crediting the voter” which is where their registration status get checked (are they inactive, did they move county, is their citizenship pending, etc.). Only after all of that is checked by a human can you actually allow them to vote (which is where they get the green card that person mentions).

Up until the mid-terms, all the voter had to was scan their ID and for 99.9% of the people their info popped up on screen and the poll worker just credited them and sent them on their way.

For the general, the state decided for some reason that we couldn’t scan IDs anymore, every voter has to fill out a manual form with their info (name, address, DOB) and sign. A poll worker has to verify the the info, find the voter in the system, manually fill in that information into the form EVEN THOUGH ITS ALREADY IN THE SYSTEM. Only after all that can they credit the voter.

Voters are slow to write poo poo down. Poll workers, who in many cases are retirees, are slow to find and enter information into the computer system.

The green cards you use to vote are generated by an iPad with an NFC reader, and generating the card takes 20-40 seconds per voter.

All that poo poo adds up, and that many manual steps leaves a lot room for fuckups. So as soon as you hit a certain number of voters, wait time starts compounding. That’s without even taking into account people who had outstanding ballots, or who don’t show up in the voter rolls, or whatever, who need special handling.

To mitigate the delays, Georgia expanded voting hours from 7am to 7pm. That’s 12 hour shifts but actually 13 because poll workers had to arrive 30 minutes early to set up and 30 mins late to leave.

They were also super short staffed in many areas so they had people traveling an hour or more to their assigned locations.

So people were working or traveling to work for more than half a day, 6 days a week, with a lunch break and two 15 minute breaks. People would just quit in the middle of they day without a word or just not turn up.

And of course people leave voting to the last second and so you had entire days with maybe 50 people coming in, and then a 500 person rush on Friday.

All because someone at SoS didn’t trust the ID scanners or whatever.

Edit: lol that was longer than I thought but gently caress I never want to be a poll worker in GA again.

Jesus Christ.

In Colorado they mail me a ballot a month ahead of time, I google everything to make an informed vote over a pot of coffee at my kitchen table, fill it out, walk it to the 24/7 ballot drop at literally any time until polls close.

Then they text you when the ballot is received and again when it’s counted.

Twincityhacker
Feb 18, 2011

When we went to vote early in Wisconsin, we had to have our names verified by the poll worker, fill out the ballot, put it in an envelope, and then write our names on the sealed envelope on front of a different poll worker.

Presumably day of voters just needed to visually compare IDs to voter roll.

It's always all about which neighborhood you're voting in. Down here in America's Wang absentee, early voting, and day of voting is among the easiest and most efficient in the entire country. Unless you're in certain areas of St. Petersburg, Miami, Orlando, or Tampa. For those precincts, and only those precincts(bar hurricanes), every cycle ends up with a court battle to extend voting hours because for some strange reason only these places have long lines and people still waiting to vote at poll closure.

I've literally never stood in line at a polling location, the worst I've had to do is show up to one to ask where the drop box is. I've never worn pants while filling out a ballot, just on the sheer principle that that's a thing I can do.

In MD I took my mother down to our board of elections (closest location to my house) parked, walked in, stated my name and address to one of the 6 people sitting down, got my ballot 30 seconds later, filled it out, put it into the scanning machine, then waited 20 minutes for my mother to fill hers out. all told 30 minutes to vote and most of that was waiting for my mother to finish her ballot.

It's simple to rationalize. "Democrats broke the Constitution first with their election-stealing conspiracies, so we can't let the Constitution get in the way of protecting the Constitution by defeating them and their anti-constitutional rule at all costs".

It's pretty easy to for people to compromise whatever principles they claimed to have if they believe that the other side is an existential threat to those principles. It's not unique to fascists, either - we see it happening all up and down the political spectrum.

I've been having a hard time keeping up with all the news regarding the railway contract situation but is it certain that this congressional passage is actually going to avert a wildcat strike? Could a strike still happen?

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2022/12/01/reso-d01.html

Came across this statement from the Railroad Workers Rank and File Committee but I'm not actually certain what the mood is amongst the actual railroad employees affected by this, see plenty of editorials trying to downplay workers rights in favor of "the economy" but I'm struggling to get a proper read on how conductors, engineers, etc. actually feel about this and whether or not they're going to full-on accept this contract forced through at a point that they probably have the most leverage and attention in their hands in forever.

From a couple of interviews I've heard with workers/union members it unfortunately doesn't sound like there's much appetite for a wildcat strike. There are a lot of workers feeling very worn down and demotivated; even months ago before they voted on the deal it sounds like a pretty common sentiment was "Why even bother to vote, Congress will just screw us over anyway if we reject it".

That said, most of those interviews were from the day or two after Biden's announcement so hopefully the recent actions and/or the level of support they've been seeing from people who are like "Wait, they can't call in sick in 2022?" might have galvanized some of them.

BTW, I just want to emphasize again that by the rail carriers' own estimates, it would cost literally less than 2% of the profits they'd taken in through September of this year to give into the workers' demands around sick leave - likely right around 1% by the time we get the numbers through December. Just utterly disgusting unbridled corporate greed that our ostensibly pro-union party/president have enabled by undercutting labor at the moment when it had maximum leverage.

Gonna steal that bolded part up there.

And these responses remind me again of exactly how much of the MAGA GOP mindset is projection. Like, if you are a thief or an adulterer, you view everyone else and your partner as a stealer and a cheater. They are painting their political opponents as trying to destroy democracy - when that is, in fact what they are doing or attempting to do. Their dear leader is clearly stating here that the constitution they worship is invalid now. Some of the republicans who don't buy it still do the projection thing because it's an old and effective tactic perfected by Karl Rove.

And Dr. VooDoo is spot on. When democracy and voters don't do what I want them to do, then it is democracy that is wrong and certain people must not be allowed to vote anymore so we'll invent the concept of mass voter fraud and then pass laws designed to prevent this non existent problem because "hey, whattaya' got against free and fair elections, lib?"

Same thing with capitalism, actually. When the free market makes decisions that they dislike, then it's censorship and cancel culture run amok all over their free speech. When private insurance socks them with a massive healthcare bill, well then poo poo, something really needs to be done since this is outrageous. I know, let's limit tort laws!
