Still feels like I need to at least finish everything in the anime pre-cancellation before I can figure out everything people complain about. Stuff about a Soul Society retread, Orihime getting an uber-interesting power but never doing anything with it, an epic battle that gets interrupted with a 30 episode filler arc before it begins, "The Heart", "Zeroth Espada", Aizen being behind the taste of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, a bullshit last-moment powerup, and some guy who can retcon themselves into anyone's backstory. I tried to like Bleach so much after the first ark, but a lot of what gave it a wild charm just evaporated into the tired "gotta protect my peeps, that's my entire character" thing. Apparently those dead guys in the sealed bureacracy room were the entire problem with Soul Society, even though nothing really changed afterwards!

I mean Bleach is fun enough as a shounen series with cool powers and fights. It definitely peaks in the Soul Society arc though, after that too many characters keep getting introduced and so many ancillary fights pile up that it can stop being cool and start being annoying that you haven't seen Ichigo in like 60 chapters. But yeah there's a ton of blatantly obvious missed potential that seems to mostly come down to the fact that the shinigami were extremely popular with readership and so Kubo had to flip SS from being at best a mixed bag to a collective force for good, and continuously shoehorning them back into the story at the expense of Ichigo and his friends. Orihime, Ishida, and Chad in particular all get done absolutely dirty in the later parts of the manga. I still really enjoy it for what it is, and there some absolute banger moments well past the Soul Society arc and beyond. Eeeeh, I see this take a lot and don't really agree with it. Yeah Ichigo is predominantly interested in protecting his friends which is kind of a static motivation, but he has a fairly satisfying character arc of starting off as a brat who doesn't really understand the weight of the powers given to him to eventually really mellowing out and maturing as a person. People point to stuff like the famous five ambulances page as proof Ichigo used to have "character" that he no longer has, but his whole punk routine is explicitly stated to be an act he adopted out of necessity because morons kept trying to pick fights with him over his name/hair/both, so it makes sense he drops it once he feels like it's no longer necessary. And he caries his fantastic dynamics with characters like Renji and Rukia all the way through to the end of the manga.
