Difficulty 4 is weird because there's no mechanical incentive to do it once you hit level 30 - it gives more money and xp but you largely stop needing money at 30 and you definitely stop needing xp. For whatever reason it still seems to have the highest success rate of any public missions I run because I imagine people who are playing at 4* are doing it because they find the challenge fun and not because they're biting off more than they can chew in the name of rewards. But the queues have always been a bit long for it compared to 1-3

I like playing it right now because people are aggressive, don't take too much damage, and play together. It's fun and challenging without being punishing.

I do think the whole thing needs a balance pass though. Vets are just too good. The other classes have things they can do that are good and helpful, but I'm still pretty sure an "optimal" team is like 4 vets with various ranged weapons and power swords. Maybe you'd run out of ammo, I don't know, but at least 2 good vets makes the mission go a lot smoother

I've been getting increasingly weird bugs in Darktide. Right now the game plays at 5 FPS even on medium settings, but if I alt-tab to something else it goes back up to 60 in the background. :psyduck:

At least it isn't crashing anymore? This is on a i7-10700k + RTX 3080 btw.

This is definitely a game I can see people coming back to a year later and there being more maps and weapons, a finished crafting system, and hopefully more classes and it being like night and day. The core gameplay is so solid but most of this stuff wasn't ready for launch which sucks. The support VT2 got means I'm not worried about the longevity of this game but I'm sure it'll take a while to get there just like VT2 did.

This is my plan exactly. My Vet is 29 and after I get him a nice-looking set I'll probably do Zealot to see the cool stuff with that and then call it good and come back in 6-12 months when I dunno they introduce the real story they got Dan Abnett for.

As far as VT2, they added stuff over time, then put out the not great Winds of Magic thing. I read something that said the Darktide crafting system was scrapped and they started over about halfway through development.

Eh, in VT2 the original 13 missions are all there (3 Acts of 4 missions, with the Skittergate finale).

And they were chock full of memorable moments. There's ringing the bell at Righteous Stand to summon the horde. There's the cliffside path to Halescourge with the shifting cliffs and then the fight itself. There's the finale of Fort Brachsenbrücke and the cannon (a standard 'carry the heavy thing to the place' finale mechanic but with flavour you remember), there is escorting the battering ram through the Rotblood warcamp so you can fight the warchief there. And then there's the Skittergate mission, which is all kinds of fantastic.

I can't think of a single Darktide mission 'moment' that leaps out in the memory like those do.

B4B got some content. They changed up the card system so that you start with the full deck loaded instead of picking one card every round. But most people ended up hating the randomized Hive system and you can still end up stuck in a safe room for up to 3 minutes because a pub on your team went afk the second they hit quickplay. There's some big content drop coming soon.

I made a series of bad investments. Tarantula farm. The bottom fell out of the market.

Yeah even comparing launch VT2 to launch Darktide, I think VT2 was more complete of a game. Did they advertise anything in VT2 leading up to release that wasn't in release?

I've got 69 hours in Darktide (lol) and while I've had a lot of fun, I like the game, and I don't regret spending the $40... there is a ton of valid criticism to be had. If someone doesn't care about that criticism, that's fine, but it doesn't make the criticism invalid.

POSITIVES:
+ Fun and engaging combat that does a good job of mixing up melee and ranged through a run, regardless of how you're specced
+ Enemy variety, both aesthetically and mechanically, is pretty good and on par with VT2
+ Looks and sounds very 40k, all the aesthetics are strong, good soundtrack
+ Fatshark are fuckups but they are communicative and I like them

NEGATIVES:
- Feature-incomplete (promotional material showed guns that aren't in the game, crafting is like 25% available, etc)
- Horrifically buggy and crash-happy for an enormous amount of users, way more than is usual for a new release. Objectively unacceptable for a product you are charging money for
- While the voice work is good, the dialogue itself is generic as a consequence of there being ~12 different personalities or whatever. In VT2 your party had conversations - in Darktide it is more the norm that three people say things that are clearly written so as to be generic enough to be used regardless of party composition. Would be less of a big deal if VT2 hadn't really knocked it out of the park in this area, it feels like a step backwards
- Drop rate for new gear is bad compared to VT2 which would let you open a chest every run for the first few dozen hours of the game. A store rotating every hour to give you FOMO if you aren't checking is a HUGE step backwards both mechanically and in terms of respecting your players
- Only four classes. VT2 had, what, 15 at release? I don't understand why there are so few. 6 talent tiers, some passive bonuses, and a unique ult. I understand coding is a lot of work but this seems like it would have been a good place to spend some energy
- Cash shop with scummy mobile pricing structure and currently no way to earn the paid currency in-game (which was promised). This made it into the game while a host of more important things went unfixed. Weird, I wonder why
- Very little variety in map environments, objectives, set pieces, and boss fights
- Weapons with multiple versions that are difficult to distinguish from one another, even when looking at their stats screen (how about a couple lines about how this is the gun with a few more shots in the mag, this one has a bit bigger range, this one has better sights, etc. dont make me guess). This is compounded by some weapons, and sometimes entire weapon types, being straight dogshit compared to others

In summary - game is fun. Game is also unacceptably broken, imbalanced, and unfinished. Both of these things are true. I know they will pull up eventually like they did with VT2 but it's crazy how they found a way to start at an even LOWER point than VT2 and people will still defend this product.

Christ, don't even compare this game to B4B. I wanted to like B4B a lot but talk about a game that felt like it was designed by people who had nothing but contempt for their players, drat...

And that's saying a lot, considering how some special spawns can feel like in a Fatshark game!

There's numerous issues with weapons, special enemy design, itemization etc but I'm honestly finding things much less broken than expected. The gameplay actually works for the most part, whereas VT2 was broken as poo poo when it launched. I have not seen things like this in my darktide matches.

I think the key to Psyker, and what I've found to carry the baddie rando's, is getting a deflection force blade and the kinetic feat to block bullets, with enough block cost reduction on curio's or the sword you be better at picking up downed teammates than a ogyn.

Also block reduction might be the trait to pick up on everyone just for how useful it is for picking up people.

I feel like even without my level 30 talent the sheer destructive power that is chaincasting half charged voidstrikes has made most of my psyker runs easier than my vet ones. You can fire them point blank and clear hordes better than melee weapons can until theres enough free room to headpop anything thats tough enough to survive that. You can throw them at your teamates to catch enemies near them in the splash and then finish them off. You can dodge backwards and kite lines of chasing enemies together into big clumps to destroy them easier. You can spam them into large mixed groups of heavy armor enemies to keep them stunned. Very jack of all trades tool.

Psyker with peril block and force sword is actually quite tanky in a pinch and can deal with a sudden pack of gunners or whatever. The biggest problem is snipers will still shoot you through it

I think the big issue with Psyker is that they're kind of a force multiplier. A lot of their abilities are not crucial but do make runs much easier - things like tying up big mobs with fire or lightning, breaking up clusters of ranged enemies with fireball, popping heads too far for other players to reach. They aren't self sufficient. And in a weird way, they're kind of like support in that they mostly make it slightly easier for other classes to do their jobs. I know as a Zealot I appreciate have half the mob I'm working on electrified because that means I'm not going to get hit in the back. I appreciate having the gunner or reaper I didn't see have their head popped. I can deal with those threats but having Psyker Middle Manager there to help direct the flow of combat is very helpful.

Part of this is the fact that the system is designed so that you can take multiple copies of the same character on missions. VT2 has stronger characterization, but that came at the cost of limiting you to one Kruber, one Elf, etc.

IMO this is a net plus, because I can play ogryn every time I want to play ogryn and never end up having to choose between playing something else or playing with bots.
