For what it's worth, I was also a bit ambivalent on Andor for the first few episodes. But I stuck with it and I thought it improved dramatically from an already decent start around episodes 5-6 and onward. It's not just the best SW thing in a long while, it's also a genuinely good show on its own merits without having to grade on a curve.

Same

First episode disappointed me a bit, actually. I guess I had my expectations too high. It gets better by 3 but still nothing so special, I almost gave up

From 4 on, though, it just gets better and better and by the end I was completely hooked

Well, I thought Willow dropped all at once so I guess I may finish up Andor this weekend anyways. Still need to finish the last season of The Expanse too. Maybe I should emulate Wing Commander: Privateer and just make it an entire sci-fi weekend.

I've been watching and rewatching Don't Hug Me I'm Scared, both seasons. It is so dark, ghoulish, absurd and absolutely hilarious, also layered and packed with hidden meaning.

Also canceled all my subscriptions to switch to Disney so I can hop on the SW bandwagon. Any recommendations for what to start with? I've seen every movie. I've watched the first episode or two of most of them and I can't decide.

I rewatched s01/02 of Mythic Quest, which was pretty funny throughout with some of the "standalones" being close to god tier. Then I switched on season 3 and it's......not very funny at all? I'm only halfway into the second episode but I haven't laughed a single time. Guess I need a t break

edit: 2nd half got funny just had to bitch into the ether hell ya

One episode into Three Pines, the new series starring Alfred Molina on Amazon Prime and this looks like my jam. Slow burn police procedural in a small town with quirky townsfolk, snowy landscape porn, historical injustices rising to the surface, and a hint of the surreal. This one is set somewhere in rural Quebec.

We're also finally getting into Midsomer Murders, the long (long!) running episodic detective show. We're definitely enjoying it although something about the pacing and length means it doesn't fully capture our attention for a whole episode and there's usually one of the dead bodies we can't remember whodunit. Barnaby chewing scenery with Troy is definitely the best part. We're still on the first Barnaby.

For 2-3 years my wife had Midsommer running in the background. She called it the dog babysitter. She'd tell the dog "go watch Uncle John" (Nettles, the Barnaby actor) and he'd go to the other room and get comfortable on the couch in front of tv while she left to do school stuff. I WFH so I'd hear all this in the background.

She refused to watch the seasons after Barnaby retired. Still 14 seasons I think? At 90 mins an episode.

The dog is now 15, went deaf last year. Now he sleeps in my office while I work. I don't expect him to be around much longer, and after I'll never be able to listen to that whistling theme song again, I'm sure.

On animated front Clone Wars and Rebels start ropey but get good later on. I haven't seen Andor but it's supposed to be good. Mandalorian has a good first season but then gets bogged down in endless parade of cameos from old characters who all act like complete weirdos. Boba Fett starts mediocre but watchable and then shits the bed so profoundly I will never watch another sw show unless it gets the really good word of mouth like Andor.

They go for a completely different vibe every season which is interesting and frustrating in equal measures. As I recall second season had some creative cold opens but overall plot was kind of a wet fart. I enjoyed drug induced surreal vibe of third season (and Quaid hamming it up). I only now noticed the fourth season was released, might check it out.

Seconded. I kept watching long past the point of good sense, but eventually turned it off after a character murders a teacher and no reason is given other than they were told to. Agreed that it's a very well-made show and the acting / casting is outstanding, but it's just so loving bleak.

I always thought Hannah was satirical in Girls, like she was supposed to be the awful nexus around which the other silly characters revolve. I didn't finish the series, and Lena Dunham has her negative reputation now for whatever the reasons are, so I'm not sure if it was, but I enjoyed it at the time.

I loving loved Gomorrah but it was a good thing about everyone dies. Last season wasn't as good as the previous ones, with these silly Russian dudes and their prison camp..still need to watch that movie about Ciro, but I still haven't as his character was always quite boring to me.

I'm stuck in a hotel trying a second time to get through Sparticus. First time, 6-7 years ago, I began s2 and quit. This trip i have completed s2.

Even though it's just fightin & fuckin, I'm burning out again. Some of the fights I've just wandered off because it feels like a re-tread. The graphical design, i get that it is inspired by 300 which was more recent at the time of the show, but feels very dated now. The music for S1 and most of 2 is so very bad. And sound cues: I swear I heard a sound effect that I call "jaguar_scream.wav" and there's a whipping sound effect that used to be used for every fire ignited on 90s cable tv. These are just mixed into the middle of fight scenes, no appropriate context.

Still, the actor for S1 was a legend. The replacement has about as much charisma as a bowl of cheerios. I liked S1 Asher but 2 was too cartoony. Lucy Lawless is the only lady character written with any depth at all and she was fun to watch. I hope there's a new interesting character thrown into S3 and 4 because the show needs it.

The new Spartacus actor felt a bit weird in season 2 but feels a bit more at home in season 3. Has a bit more of an older, world-weary of the battle quality which fits. They also decided not to pad it out and go for all killer no filler when they ended on 3, the opening episode has some romans discussing a series of battles and events in flashback between the seasons that could have been one on its own. The mini prequel series also owns, more Batiatus to enjoy.

Finished the first season of Riget (The Kingdom). It's loving hilarious. There's this arsehole neurosurgeon who's such an amazing liar and fraud that it becomes absolutely hilarious. e.g. a scene late in the season where he's passing at the trough with another dude, glances at the man's (implied to be far more considerable) cock and then reacts by slapping his neighbour across the face. And the saga of the man's obsession with his private parking space, and its Swedish traffic cones, is very very funny.

Also every episode ends with Lars Von Trier popping up to troll the audience with increasingly silly commentary on the episode.

Despite all this, it manages to be legitimately creepy.

Also working my way through the third season of Babylon Berlin, which contains an extremely extravagant, peak TV subplot about a serial killer stalking a film set for a Weimar era musical that is extremely my poo poo.

Finished Andor. It was really good but was starting to lose me a bit by the end.

Spoilers for the show:

Not a big fan of Luthen probably being a Jedi. That Maarva funeral speech was nearing eye-roll levels of heavy handedness and it leading to the Boston Morlana Massacre was pretty on the nose.

But those pretty minor nitpicks are basically the only issues I had and I’d say episodes 3-10 could stand up to any other major show I’ve seen in the last several years.

Color me pleasantly surprised. I figured I’d like it well enough because it’s a spy/espionage tale but it really exceeded my expectations and the character work and dialogue were way ahead of anything I’d expect from Star Wars.

Hopefully it won’t follow every other Star Wars franchise since the original and start sucking immediately with the second installment.
