In my experience, those formations are two very different playstyles. I tend to see mounted squads as a reactive force, since ten models is fine but might not be enough to be on the front line, while the Big Beautiful Blobs are more of a 'gently caress you, I'm doing this thing' kind of force. Both are psychologically distracting in different ways - the Rhinos keep their riders out of sight and out of mind at the cost of turning focus to your really expensive poo poo, while the Blobs are visually arresting and can start to short-circuit the enemy's target priority (especially if you're running Dark Brethren and there's a point of Favor or two coming down the pike).

For what it's worth, the XVIIth is excellent at the Big Beautiful Blobs strategy. Dark Channeling keeps them from breaking, and a single point of Favor or boost from Eater of Wisdom turns those Despoilers or Assaults into some absolute murderers.

And you mentioned special characters - he's expensive as gently caress, but Zardu Layak is excellent at buffing BBBs and can still take a Command Squad due to some rules chicanery.

Thank you kindly for the response. I think i'm going to go the blob route for sure.

I am, for the first time in what feels like a very long time, so pumped to start getting this army put together. I have the Chaos marine box coming tonight and my 3d printer will be setup tomorrow. I found a Patreon who had EXACTLY what I wanted, Rune etched Chaos armour stuff, to really make this army my own.

And yeah. I can't recall the last time I felt just gently caress YEAH!!! To painting and modding models. I've always loved playing the games but after working for GW for a number of years I kinda hated painting after that so I only wanted small specialist games. But now?
Between the models, the new paints that have come out, a great new rule set.....Yeah. I am stoked. I'll post pics in the next couple days as I get models assembled and what not.

If it is, it'll probably show up in a supplemental PDF like most everything else.

Looking good and drat scary too!!

Quick question about the LVO. Do I need to avoid tossing too many 3rd party shouldler pads on my Word Bearers or anything like that? I am printing up some signficantlly better looking rune etched chaos shoulder pads I was going to mix through the army on top of Chaos Space Marine box or 2.

If you're doing the ZM event, we don't really care about that. We don't run the other 30k event so I can't really comment on how sensitive they might be, but I think it's "just narrative" anyway so I imagine they'd be pretty chill.

It's less exaggerated with the Mk II ones. I have some for my Veterans and Havocs.

Updated verdict now that I'm actually working on these havocs: this loving sucks, man, I hate the new heavy weapons kits. Whose idea was it to mold the left hand on the guns in new kits anyway? The Tortuga bodies naturally don't have the alignment pegs, so my one test model so far looks like he has two broken wrists from the only angle that got both arms to even connect to the torso. It's like this with a MkIV torso, too, so it's not just the Tortuga proportions! If I didn't already have the whole kit, I'd just buy the resin upgrades instead; as is, time for the incredibly annoying process of figuring out how to make all this fit together. Hell, I've had hosed alignments from MkVI using the alignment pegs perfectly correctly, so it's not even an issue of "not the intended kit" that fucks these up.

Both Mark IV and Mark VI torsos are 11mm across, so theoretically arms that work on one should work on the other if you can just get the angle right. How wide are the tortuga torsos?

(Best thought I have would be use a spare MkVI body to glue the arms together at the wrist using the posing studs, and once they're set, very carefully pull them off the MkVI torso as a horseshoe shape and then put them on other torsos. This should work if the torso widths match up.)

Posing marines can be weird. I use little balls of greenstuff at the joints with super glue. Gives you about an hour of working time and it dries super hard

It's grogs.txt, but I don't particularly like it when the Legion helmet isn't identifiable as the Mark it's supposed to be. Especially when the Beaky beak is supposed to be where the sensors are - and that's half the benefit of MK6, roight?

Ofc, nobody cares about that nerd stuff, so I'll ask a different question: do you mix Legion and regular helmets in a unit?

I do, but the vast majority of my models have DG pickel helmets. Maybe a quarter are just Mk3 marines.

We played 30k tonight!

His Titan (grey) shot my Titan (red) and made it explode, with a blast radius sufficient to catch his own Titan and made it explode, taking out the half his army he had left.

Ah, good times.

For the past few days, I have been beset by the idea that I shouldn't do my beakies and prets as DG, but I have barely managed to develop it further. Considering that they're assembled as mostly Tacs and Tac supports, where else can I go for KT purposes? IH, UM, BA, EC? Argh.

There's oldschool artwork of Death Guard beakies from Istvaan so they've canonically had them for ages. Also, beakies look fantastic in Death Guard colours and the DG MKVI kits are some of the best they've done.
