they further banned being gay in Russia

http://www.socialpsychology.org/cli...anti-lgbtq-law/

quote:

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed expanded anti-LGBTQ+ legislation on Monday. The law was [originally introduced by the lower house of Russia's legislature in October](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/russia-anti-lgbtq-legislation-propaganda/), and banned so-called "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations" for both adults and minors, said a [statement](http://duma.gov.ru/news/55609/) by the State Duma. The original bill passed both the lower and upper chambers of Russian legislature before being signed into law by Putin.

All positive depictions of the LGBTQ+ community in literature, film, television, online, and more will now be illegal in Russia.

"The initiatives propose punishment for the promotion and justification of non-traditional sexual relations in the media, the Internet, literature and cinema," the statement from the State Duma read, describing the imposition of intimidating fines against individuals, organizations and businesses that the State deems as violating the new legislation.

The fines range from 100,000 to 4 million rubles, or roughly $1,660 to $66,000. Non-Russian citizens would face expulsion from the country should they be found in violation of the law.

The law was authored by Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin, who said in the State Duma statement, "We have traditions, a conscience, an understanding that we need to think about children, families, the country, and preserve what our parents have passed on to us," while citing data that shows increased numbers of people who identify as LGBTQ+ in Europe and the U.S.

"We must do everything to protect our children and those who want to live a normal life. Everything else is sin, sodomy, darkness, and our country is fighting this," he said.

The law has been denounced by many activists and political figures, including U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who called it a "serious blow to freedom of expression and the human rights of LGBTQI+ persons in Russia" in [Tweet](https://twitter.com/SecBlinken/stat...europe-63747732) last month after the proposed [law passed unanimously through the lower court](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/russian-duma-has-given-lgbtq-propaganda-bill-final-approval/).

> The proposed expansion of Russia’s ban on information regarding LGBTQI+ issues would be another serious blow to freedom of expression and the human rights of LGBTQI+ persons in Russia. We urge Russian lawmakers to withdraw the bill and respect the human rights and dignity of all.
>
> — Secretary Antony Blinken (@SecBlinken) [November 24, 2022](https://twitter.com/SecBlinken/status/1595582634930880512?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)

This new piece of legislation builds on [a 2013 Russian law](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/russian-anti-gay-bill-passes-protesters-detained/) that banned the so-called "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations" to children specifically. The new law now includes adults as well.

Shortly before the State Duma approved the 2013 legislation in a 436-0 vote, people protesting the bill's passing were attacked by those with anti-LGBTQ+ viewpoints before being detained by police.

Though Russia decriminalized homosexuality in 1993, amendments to the Russian Constitution in 2020 banned LGBTQ+ unions in the country — an action that was [declared a human rights violation](https://hudoc.echr.coe.int/eng#%7B%22tabview%22:%5B%22document%22%5D,%22itemid%22:%5B%22001-211016%22%5D%7D) by the European Court of Human Rights. Putin has even previously said that Russia must ["cleanse" itself](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/putin-russia-must-cleanse-itself-of-homosexuality/) of homosexuality.

Russia has also been criticized in recent years for [its treatment of LGBTQ+ people in Chechnya](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/national-coming-out-day-a-survivor-of-chechnya-anti-gay-purge-steps-out-of-the-shadows-60-minutes-2019-10-11/), whose mayor denounced homosexuality in 2017, stating "We don't have those kinds of people here." Chechen members of the LGBTQ+ community have accused police in the Russian republic of kidnapping and torture.

While the Kremlin has not yet announced Putin's signature on this latest anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, it was shown on a copy of the measure published on the State Duma website, according to the [Associated Press](https://apnews.com/article/putin-europe-business-gay-rights-3d08c68ecd95d41511d96336c4f1aa9e).

The V-22 already is the most expensive option. It is a very, very expensive thing. And comparatively large.

Meanwhile, this summer, the army simply ordered a bunch more blackhawks in what may be the last (years-long) purchase of them.

Germany arrests 25 accused of plotting coup

quote:

Twenty-five people have been arrested in raids across Germany on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government.

German reports say the group of far-right and ex-military figures planned to storm the parliament building, the Reichstag, and seize power.

A minor aristocrat described as Prince Heinrich XIII, 71, is alleged to have been central to their plans.

According to federal prosecutors, he is one of two alleged ringleaders among those arrested across 11 German states.

The plotters are said to include members of the extremist Reichsbürger [Citizens of the Reich] movement, which has long been in the sights of German police over violent attacks and racist conspiracy theories. They also refuse to recognise the modern German state.

An estimated 50 men and women are alleged to have been part of the group, said to have plotted to overthrow the republic and replace it with a new state modelled on the Germany of 1871 - an empire called the Second Reich.

...

Three thousand officers took part in 130 raids across much of the country, with two people arrested in Austria and Italy. Those detained were due to be questioned later in the day.

...

The federal prosecutor's office said the group had been plotting a violent coup since November 2021 and members of its central "Rat" (council) had since held regular meetings.

They had already established plans to rule Germany with departments covering health, justice and foreign affairs, the prosecutor said. Members understood they could only realise their goals by "military means and violence against state representatives" which included carrying out killings.

Investigators are thought to have got wind of the group when they uncovered a kidnap plot last April involving a gang who called themselves United Patriots.

They too were part of the Reichsbürger scene and had allegedly planned to abduct Health Minister Karl Lauterbach while also creating "civil war conditions" to bring about an end to Germany's democracy.

The latest plot is also said to have involved a former far-right AfD member of the lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, who was lined up to be installed as the group's justice minister, with Prince Heinrich as leader.

Heinrich XIII comes from an old noble family known as the House of Reuss, which ruled over parts of the modern eastern state of Thuringia until 1918. All the male members of the family were given the name Heinrich as well as a number.

As well as a shadow government, the plotters allegedly had plans for a military arm, with active and former members of the military a significant part of the coup plot, according to reports. They included ex-elite soldiers from special units. The aim of military arm was to eliminate democratic bodies at local level, prosecutors said.

One of those under investigation is a member of the Special Commando Forces, and police searched his home and his room at the Graf-Zeppelin military base in Calw, south-west of Stuttgart.

Kinda. IIRC they basically hold that the Treaty of Versailles illegitimately disbanded the imperial German government and so everything from Weimar onwards can be ignored.

They also really want to establish a successor state to the 2nd Reich. A third variation, if you will.

Also also, German special forces just keep turning out to be nazis. It's really odd. Also Australian. Also American.

I think since the whole double genocide thing is intended to excuse a very specific genocide it's fair to take that one for comparison. It's not like they are trying to make the case that Stalin was as bad as Churchill.

the most obvious counter-example is that the Holocaust only ended because someone stopped the Germans

a more nuanced story is that the Congo Free State was ended by international pressure as exerted by the Casement Report and the Congo Reform Association. The British Parliament and other European powers found King Leopold II in violation of the Berlin Act of 1885 and forced Belgium to annex Congo Free State into a less abusive, paternalistic colony

quote:

Elder Dempster had a shipping contract with the Congo Free State for the connection between Antwerp and Boma. Due to his knowledge of French, Morel was often sent to Belgium, where he was able to view the internal accounts of the Congo Free State held by Elder Dempster. The knowledge that the ships leaving Belgium for the Congo carried only guns, chains, ordnance and explosives, but no commercial goods, while ships arriving from the colony came back full of valuable products such as raw rubber and ivory, led him to the conclusion that Belgian King Leopold II's policy was exploitative and a type of slavery.[9] According to author Adam Hochschild, Morel's conclusions were correct—the value of the goods coming from the Congo Free State was five times that of the goods coming from Europe, and the difference was being extracted from the Congolese population through force and mass atrocities.[10]

E. D. Morel is considered by some to be the father of parapolitics, for essentially developing a conspiratorial theory about what went on in the Congo, following the money, and then being proven entirely correct

quote:

In collaboration with Roger Casement, Morel led a campaign against slavery in the Congo Free State, founded the Congo Reform Association and published the West African Mail. With the help of celebrities such as Arthur Conan Doyle and Mark Twain, the movement successfully pressured the Belgian King Leopold II to sell the Congo Free State to the Belgian government, ending some of the human rights abuses perpetrated under his rule.

That the same thing is happening to the Scots-Irish of Newfoundland - in terms of culture being eradicated, and the province emptying out as young men move to Alberta - it just shows that Victorian capitalism was selective along racial lines but as the rate of profit fell, well, hard decisions had to be made what a pity.

Not that it excuses any of it, but it’s like how Scots-Irish drove native people out of Appalachia, and now they’ve been made redundant too, it just took two hundred years to wring the surplus out of the region.

The usual version is that the Weimar constitution was never formally abolished and is thus still in effect, therefore the current German state/goverment is illegitimate. Also, the allies are still illegally occupying the country and the goverment is actually the board of directors of a "Germany corporation" (???).
