Also more generally, businesses can stop doing business with you for literally no reason (as long as they're not explicit about being racist/sexist/etc). Your local hardware store can stop using their nail supplier because their delivery guy sucks at parking. You sure as poo poo can stop doing business because the CEO is praising Hitler, and in fact this should be considered good business practice.

But that's the whole point of the Icarus story, that flying too close to the sun is suicide, the comic couldn't mean anything else.

Well assuming he understands the story of course, which is a risky assumption in political cartoons

Completely mangling metaphors and meanings is the political cartoonist's bread and butter.
We have hundreds of examples of "Robin Hood/Batman/Superman is the villain in my cartoon" and to a lesser extent, ones where the villain is portrayed as the good guy in whatever botched point they're trying to make.

Yeah, but those were actually a metaphor. See, they look like something that could provide food to those in need, but they are only for show and do nothing of value, despite being a large investment.

As you and the rest of the thread have said, no cartoonist deserves the benefit of the doubt when it comes to actually understanding the stories and metaphors they reference, but especially not Ishida. Also it's pretty clear from the way he drew bird-Ye that the depiction is a positive one. For someone who draws his opponents as hideous, brainless zombies falling apart with blown-out pupils, giving Ye a stoic face and determined dialog is a pretty obvious endorsement in the visual language of cartooning.
