It's not the same thing as Verdun, though. German troops were under standing orders to counter-assault immediately after losing trenches, resulting in a bloody mess since often those trenches were well-mapped by both sides, since they were changing hands so often. And while the artillery of WWI was a lot less accurate, the weight of fire available to both sides at Verdun was orders of magnitude higher then here, plus the individual soldiers back then barely had any protection. No body armor, for example. 1916 was also the time where both sides had finally managed to get through the shell crisis of the early war, when everyone ran out of ammunition. In this case though, well Russia's situation is so bad they had to beg North Korea for supplies... Making counter-attacks when it makes sense is just what you do, mindlessly throwing men into a meat grinder isn't a counter-attack though, what von Falkenhayn did was basically murdering his own soldiers.

There's at least a couple other things in the OP that probably could apply. This thread is a high risk posting zone. Speaking of which, I'd better add some content. To all the discussion about how it'll be up to Russia to decide when they have had enough and decide to end the war (by leaving Ukraine), Putin basically responds with "no, you". Immediate counterattacks are conducted because the attacking force is usually tired, depleted, and low on ammunition - making them relatively easy to shove out of their positions. That's a major reason its important for both defenders and attackers to maintain sizable reserves, both to conduct such counterattacks and to quickly respond to them. It's not the early war anymore where artillery duels were entirely in Russia's favor. I feel the only upside to Russia with the Bakhmut obsession is that AA systems are gonna be so dense that drones can't get through at all.

Putin apparently now thinks Germany was part of a plan to lure Russia into a trap, really weird. I think he may have thought Merkel was actually his friend. Sorry buddy, only Schröder likes you. In further dumb poo poo news, the US has graciously allowed Germany to send Patriots and Leo-2s, but since Scholze's standpoint has been "we will send Panzer when someone else does first", so this does absolutely jack and poo poo, as the obvious Scholz-answer will be "OK" and then still no Leo-2s. Scholz still wants to continue talking with Putin, re-assuring everyone that there is no screaming when they politely tell each other that they think they're shitheads, so there's a real chance that yes, there are screaming matches between the two. Ukraine has ordered more AA-systems from German companies, but our industry is so slow that those 20 new systems will be delivered around 2024. Welp, at least the THW (Technisches Hilfswerk) has send tons of help, like mobile generators, to keep Ukrainians warm. Luckily we can still produce non-weapons, at least!

I imagine thats a Gulf War-style strategy and doesn't really fit anything Russia has performed. So much of the initial strategy seems to have been based around Putin being high on his own supply and truly believing that many Ukrainians would either welcome Russia intervening to remove their dictatorial western puppet leader, or at least being ambivalent to it. So a lot of infrastructure wasn't disrupted as it would be needed when Russia took over and they could aim for as smooth a transition as possible.
