Friend's mom just went back there even though she begged her to either stay here with her or in Poland with her brother. But she's a doctor and says she can't just abandon her patients. For my friend's sake I wish she'd stayed, but I get it.

Yeah I think he's just putting on weight in general. He got fat in the mid-00s and then slimmed down and now he's ballooning out again. Relatable!

People are continually bombarded with propaganda headlines about "Putin's Russia" and "Putin's war": you can forgive them for assuming that if Putin just goes, everything would basically be good again. The war can't be discussed in western media in terms of competing power blocs: instead, it's highly individualised as all being down to one man's baffling insane criminality.

Btw, if Putin dies, Mishustin will take power not Medvedev, Mishustin is also relatively popular and generally seen as competent. In all honesty, it would be an improvement even if Mishustin is also very much a liberal.

That or public opinion still has influence and people have made their own choices. In all honesty, the anti-war protests in Russia were pretty small and the people most opposed to it largely left with mobilization.

If you got rid of Putin, the apparatus would produce someone very much like him (a right-wing liberal). Navalny and the pro-West liberals have always had a silver of support (3-5%) and simply don't have enough to make any headway especially now. The KPRF has talked about is a hodgepodge party that isn't really unified enough to do much and besides its core of pensioners it's voting bloc seems easily capturable by either side.

Popular support doesn't really mean anything when there's no tradition of democracy, that kind of support is more easily built after taking power than as part of a process to gain public consent beforehand

What does a "tradition of democracy" mean? In the West it has always been about giving a limited set of choices with minimal differences in policy and Russia is no different.

In Russia, the choice comes down to if Moscow or Washington will be directing the affairs of the country, and while people often gripe, they still prefer Moscow.

People in the US would prefer eliminating student debt and more social support, but it is never going to happen.

The excuse of the century.

Pavel Nikolin, who opened fire on police officers with a machine gun in Novoshakhtinsk on December 6, stated in court (https://www.rbc.ru/society/09/12/2022/639305559a794702b8eeaa32?from=newsfeed) that he served in the so-called "Wagner PMC," did not know that he was not in Ukraine, and mistook the policemen for "dill":

"I didn't even know I had crossed [the border], fell behind the group," he said in court. When asked why he started shooting at the policemen, Nikolin said he "thought - dill [Ukrainian military]." "Because they were not in uniform [dressed] and didn't provide documents," the suspect added.

The Leninsky Court in Rostov-on-Don sent Nikolin into custody until February 6, 2023. Previously, he had already been tried for theft and robbery.

Well, dear subscribers, to understand and forgive? It can happen to anyone, right?

TASS, citing a law enforcement source, reported that the attacker was armed with a machine gun and could be a deserter. Telegram channel 112 reported that the attack took place near a customs post at the exit from Novoshakhtinsk, which is about 10 km from LNR territory.

The information on whether the man who opened fire on police officers in the Rostov region is a deserter from the Wagner PMC is not public and "is of a closed operational nature," said Yevgeny Prigozhin, founder of the military company.

"If indeed Nikolin was a fighter of the Wagner PMC and committed the offense, then it is necessary to separately investigate how such an incident, which should be under the "top secret", got into the hands of journalists, as well as how this man crossed the border of the Russian Federation," he said.
