Empty Sandwich posted:I looked up mountain lion attacks after the North America post and The vast majority of cougar/human conflicts are from 2 causes. The first is protecting young or a kill site which is the videos you see of a mountain lion escorting someone down a trail. They want you to leave so they make themselves known and make a lot of noise. Don't fight this animal as it just wants you to leave and fighting won't go your way. The second is old or sick lions who see people as easier prey or don't have any other option. The last one in my area that attacked a kid and was hunted down was old, very underweight and was missing a lot of its teeth. The child's dad saved her and fought it off.

I had an idiot moment, in front of a bunch of children, during a production of Mary Poppins. I said out loud, "What the gently caress, Mr. Banks works at the bank? What the gently caress is this, some sort of children's book?" That's the thing I can't believe I just figured out after a week of tech and half a week of shows. The children in the show won't let me live this down, and keep coming up to excitedly tell me that Mr. Banks works at the bank.

I work outside for a living. Bears, cougars, bobcats (a native cat to the West US that is somewhat larger than your average house cat), and rattlesnakes are all mentioned in the same breath at safety circle up as being so incredibly dangerous. The OSHA stats show that something like 95% of the accidents that are non-slips,trips,falls are caused by other people and dogs. In my years of being outside, I've run into bears, cougars, bobcats, and rattlesnakes and none have tried to attack me, including that one time I literally blundered into a mama bear and her three cubs less than 20 feet from me. People are by far the most dangerous thing you will ever encounter, and dogs are a distant 2nd. Stay away from all humanity namaste

Here's one that came up for me the other day. Tie-dye is called that because the item you're dying is tied into swirls and bunches etc. Realized that after seeing someone go through the process on YouTube. I think that was the first time I've actually seen it done. How does a middle-aged man realize that only now? Combination of upbringing and... Just not paying attention to tie-dye? Other than to the Grateful Dead jerseys Lithuania's basketball team wore to the 1992 Olympics: Now I'm gonna go track down one of those shirts.

No you're right, the taxonomy of both giant pandas and red pandas has been tumultuous and has shifted multiple times. They've at times been said to be most closely related to each other or to raccoons. But in relatively recent years DNA analysis has straightened it out. Giant pandas are bears and red pandas are in their own family Ailuridae but share a superfamily with mustelids, raccoons, and skunks.

I was taught that "brontosaurus" wasn't real and it was just an archaeologist accidentally putting a brachiosaurus head on the wrong end of the rest of the fossil. None of that is true. There was some confusion early on, two different partial apatosaurus fossils were identified as being different species with the one discovered later being called "brontosaurus" and there was some confusion with a different species' skull involved at one point, but today there's just a debate over whether brontosaurus is in fact distinct enough from apatosaurus to qualify as a different species. I was also taught that Columbus wanted to prove the Earth was round and that gravity exists because of centrifugal force caused by the Earth's rotation, neither of which make any sense.
