All of Steam's dumb gamification and social media features should piss off forever. Curators and badges and account levels and little boxes that show you that this dev is streaming. All of it is stupid irritating bloat and it sucks.

I even resent having a friends list but I realize I'm an outlier for that and I can at least turn the loving thing off.

the curators system is a perfectly reasonable idea, but it needed oversight to keep it from descending into mass fraud, and valve are categorically unwilling to make that kind of effort

they expect features to just work without human oversight, or they defer the human work to the community through crowdsourcing, such as the tags on steam games being assigned by users (which of course gets abused)

I like both reviews and curators. If one subscribes to meme curators, well, they get what they were looking for, and demonstrate that there's a market for it...

But then what work will be left to do for the Steam employees that used to make games? How will they make their bonuses??!

Except the meme curators and reviews are the only ones surfaced. Like, short of blocking all of them manually I am going to see nothing but garbage since I don't go to dedicated curator pages to see what they say.

I actually hit my block limit by blocking curators that are nothing but just "THIS IS MY FAVORITE GAME ON THE STATION" or "nep nep nep" or ":D" or "shoves woke SJW politics by groomers down your throat because there's a bit in a cutscene where two men walking by on a busy street are holding hands." And there's still so, so many more of them I want to hurl into the digital abyss, and the "don't show me these curators" list shares a limit with "don't show me these studios," so I can't block publishers I will never buy from. And there's still no "if a game has Denuvo don't waste my loving time with it" option.

Honestly I gave up on using anything but word of mouth and reviews from dedicated sites to buy steam games ages ago, anyway. This thread has made me even more aware of the sheer number of lovely games that get added to steam every day, and how many of them end up with decent scores because people will upvote anything. I just don't even bother with them.

Kinda hope they get reported for that because I believe paid positive reviews is against the TOS or something? I swear I just saw an article in which Valve murdered a fuckton of curators for doing poo poo like this.
Don't forget to look at what curator is asking to be paid to review the game.

Oh no I definitely saw that too. It's just further proof the system is garbage and needs to be thrown away.

I kinda feel I live in a parallel universe tbh. I can take any game I have some mild interest in and almost instantly find a dozen reviews that tell me something interesting about it. I generally use the filters to read both positive/negative ones, and that usually gives me a good idea of whether or not the game will be my jam or not. As for curators, I have a few subscribed which are thematically focused, such as turn-based tactics or shmups. They work well as a quick curated list of games in the genre during sales.

But obviously, if every single review/curator is meme stuff for you, I get where you're coming from.

Dark_Swordmaster

I also don't follow any curators so what I get is what Steam serves up by default which is very likely lol upvote poo poo. I'm sure if you're willing to take way more time than you should have to in order to dig in and engage with it curators can be a surprisingly rewarding system to interact with. But on the surface level with what it defaults to, holy loving poo poo.

Just how many mistakes have you suffered on the way here?

An uncountable number, to be sure.
I don't follow any curators, but I also never even look at them so I have no idea how bad they are (or not). Seems to me they aren't being shoved in my face so I don't particularly care.

Fun Shoe
I follow a handful of curators from when it first started. The trick I used was to stick with curators that specialized in a specific genre.

Reviews are useful, too. I just scroll past anything that looks stupid and try to get a quick bullet point list of pros and cons from a quick scan of the rest.

I also leave reviews for smaller games, too, if I think they're something that needs more attention or that's too lovely to be worth playing. Every bit helps.

The tears of time
Steam reviews are helpful for figuring out whether DLC's worth buying for more obscure games. You can usually tell just from the most helpful review whether people are mad because something is broken or doesn't integrate with the rest of the game or if it's just "game has too much DLC" or Denuvo or whatever. Never liked the idea of curators though. Feels like a promotional gimmick, but I also can't imagine it's that rewarding for commercial game sites or streamers who try to use it.

Fun Shoe
The idea of curators makes sense - if you think user reviews are largely useless and bandwagony, you can instead follow curators whose tastes match your own and see what they have to say instead. But it ends up suffering from the same discoverability problem it's trying to solve because there's not really stopping anyone from setting up tons of bullshit spammy curators that exist mostly to harvest promotional keys from developers, which ends up with a similar signal:noise ratio to user reviews.
