Comedy is the first to age and it usually ages poorly, satire/parody most of all. A lot of Mel Brooks' gags regarding gender and sexuality have really aged poorly for example.

That said, for Media That Didn't Age Well, I really love that The Joker (a movie with the "you can't make edgy comedy anymore because everyone is so PC these days" from the Hangover series guy, with the titular character literally saying "you decide what is funny and what's not" before metaphorically shooting his critics) has lost his Oscar to Jojo Rabbit.

So yeah...you can still "make Mel Brooks movies today", it's just that what this means is different today for a society that has moved 40years forward from back then.

Edit: there's a nice Lindsay Ellis video about this, but I can't link it cause it's Patreon walled. Also Lindsay Ellis is back in case you missed it, but she's not doing public videos anymore for now

The Joker is literally just Taxi Driver + The King of Comedy. It says very little because there’s not much point in talking about the 70s these days.

It's a great movie as long as you don't go into it expecting it to be a remake of Suspiria. It had some amazing practical effects too. They hired a girl whose body could just do that for that one scene.

His specific argument was that the game failed because 'society is too woke to play a game about a gruff straight white guy'.

Which is just absurd. C'mon, man, making games about gruff straight white guys is how you win awards in the medium of video games, we're only now seeing the medium slowly wean itself off of Sad Dad Games (which, as an aside, I think will make it very easy to date a particular era of video games in the future, it's the 'cutesy animal mascot' of the last two console generations). Making a game like that and still failing says that you hosed up real bad somewhere along the line.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, we're STILL in the Sad Dad Boom. But I think we're on the tail end; there was a phase were drat near every big critically-acclaimed game was some flavor of Sad Dad Game.

By my gut, the Sad Dads will be well and truly out the moment another type of protagonist becomes popular enough to become 'the default' for developers just wanting to make a big game. There's room for something to take that spot, but no real contenders yet, and until then Sad Dad Games remain the media darlings.

Wasn't he basing it on Ghosts of Tsushima being heralded as a success while Day's Gone didn't get the sequel he wanted despite them 'moving a similar number of units'. Which they did, but Day's Gone came out a year earlier was given away for free multiple times and was perpetually in the $10 sale bin.

Yeah, the game's actual narrative and tone don't reflect the director's views at all in a kinda fascinating way. Nah, Days Gone instead deconstructs that machismo he mentions over, and over, and over. It is a story of a guy who smokes weed and wears a cut so calls himself a 1%er, got married in his hometown and then his wife died, except it takes place in the apocalypse and so she's likely out there. But he can't bring himself to search for her because leaving precious memories behind hurts too much. They don't hide any of this, the story has its heart tattooed on its skin. Deacon and Sarah are deeply in love, you watch their cute lonely biker wedding, flash forward to Deacon in the present and he's crying over the memories. And whenever they show you Sarah's half indeed there is no weird PUA stuff, their relationship is totally genuine. It utterly defies the director's intent and imo oozes passion.

Edit: just for reference the director has been acting that way since around the time the game came out. Might have a case of blaming everyone but himself for its middling reception. I think he got pretty into nft's when they were a fad so that's the type of guy he is.

It doesn't help that the first act (15 hours) is the weakest. There's little plot, your weapons suck, and most of the characters you meet are irrelevant. It takes ages for the hero to bother getting medical attention for his bro's blowtorched arm, which gets inevitably gets amputated because everyone's an idiot.

IIRC the protagonist is also ironically quite “woke” himself for a biker and says that racism is bad a couple of times.

Really should have gone with a “go woke, go broke” framing for the game’s failure if he wanted to be consistent

Yeah, the thing with Sad Dad Games isn't that they actually flooded the market, but more that they flooded the discourse; every Sad Dad Game was big enough and important enough to suck all the air out of the room, to the point where it didn't feel like other games could exist. It's similar to the current glut of superhero movies: no, they aren't the only things getting made, but it sure feels like it sometimes. Except that in this case, the superhero movies were also sweeping awards seasons.

Apparently the dude's primary example of why the game was NSFW (not safe for wokes) was a scene where Deacon admires a lady's rear end. This scene sent such huge waves across the wokeosphere that I'd never heard about it until he brought it up.

It didn't even sound like the context was creepy, it sounded like flirting between two consenting adults. So he's really telling on himself if he can't figure out where the line is. Big "you can't make a joke about ANYTHING these days" energy.

DmC was very weird overall because Capcom literally shopped out to people like that, and even refused to actually let them make it more like the original games when they started to feel like being backwards, edgy, and misanthropic was a really bad fit for DMC. All because Inafune convinced Capcom that 'everybody hates Japanese games' (maybe he talked to Phil Fish?) and that they had to go EDGY and hire western devs to do all their games for them to survive.

They weren't the only developer to make that mistake, although they were probably the loudest.

I think the best response to it was from the director of Ninja Gaiden 3, after they did try to westernize it and failed. The quote was basically 'we tried to make a western-style hamburger, and none of you wanted that, so I promise that from now on we're gonna stick to making really good sushi'.
