Which games are worth getting Proton set up for? Plenty of sources agree it makes some games run better but I can't really find any which are specific regarding which ones Is it just like, you realize a game is running bad so you try Proton with it and see if it's better?

https://www.protondb.com/ proton-db is what I check just to see what other people are doing to get things to run well. Games will default to proton if there is no linux build. If there is a linux build, sometimes it isn't very good so the proton layer will actually work better.

Played with it for a bit. Thoughts I thunk and maybe a couple of questions: 1. Quite a powerful little fan it has. Not that I am complaining; I would rather have it noticeably work than not at all, and it is not distracting. But it does make its presence known. 2. I like that the big grips locate your hands away from the source of most of the heat. The main reason I never liked cell phone gaming is that after a while the entire phone becomes a hot brick. 3. I know the RE Engine is some black magic but it is cool seeing Devil May Cry 5 work on this thing with mostly high settings. 4. Speaking of settings, should I not mess with them too much unless I need to lower something for a troublesome game? MH Rise could be higher but I am not sure if I want to take the chance. 5. Any particular MicroSDs I should get?

Has anyone else had a weird explosion of duplicate "valve created" controller templates? I've got like 3 copies of every template now, all named the same and I've no idea where they came from. Some of them don't even seem to properly bind a lot of controls that I'm sure they were before edit: i just counted and i have 12 identical-looking "Keyboard with WASD and mouse" and 8 "Gamepad" and goddamn it's a mess in there now. To be clear, these are all listed as "valve created" - i only have 1 "user created" template that I made for myself Lord Bob fucked around with this message at 09:12 on Dec 10, 2022 |

MH Rise could be higher but I am not sure if I want to take the chance. Most games should figure their settings out decently, but it depends on what target they're shooting for. Horizon Zero Dawn for example defaults to high settings which is fine for 30fps but you'll want to drop it to medium/low if you want 40fps. Likewise Dirt 3 (marked as unsupported but runs perfectly fine with no tinkering) defaults to low settings but can absolutely run at high. Also check resolution in a lot of games, sometimes they don't default to 1280x800 even when they support it.

I haven't gotten Heroic Launcher to actually... work. Like, I installed it, and used it to install Assassin's Creed Valhalla from the Epic Store, but when I launch it in Game Mode, it just sits on the spinning Steam logo and doesn't appear to be doing anything. It also doesn't close cleanly, it doesn't close when the Steam UI "close game" command is selected.

How To Avoid Sending Your Steam Deck For RMA, by Flint_Paper Hello folks. I've already had to return my Steam Deck once because of a dead pixel, so when I got it back and the left trigger felt a bit spongy, I was loath to send it back again and be without my cool new toy for another couple of weeks. I thought I'd run through the steps I took to fix it, just in case any of you were in a similar situation, and wanted to know how to avoid sending it back for RMA. Step 1: Do a bit of research. I'd already taken the back off the Deck, and noticed that the button worked fine without the back in place. I couldn't see anything wrong with the button/spring itself, so concluded that it must have been an issue with the case pressing slightly against the trigger and inhibiting travel. A cursory google suggested that this was the case, pun not intended, and it should be an easy fix. Step 2: It's midnight, convince yourself that you don't need to fix it Right Now, and it can in fact wait until tomorrow. Step 3: Consider your options. Given that there is only the tiniest bit of plastic touching the trigger, you have two choices. You can either use sandpaper (or the Aldi knock-off Dremel you bought a few years ago that continues to frighten you) to take away a bit of the case, or use your heatgun to apply a tiny bit of heat and bend away the offending area. Decide to use the heat gun, because you don't want to damage the case should you need to send it for RMA. Remember this step. You will dwell on it later. Step 4: It's the morning! Let's make some choices! Take the back off your Deck and carry it all upstairs. Decide to work in the front room because you don't have a garage, and the shed in the garden is falling to pieces. Open the window to let out any fumes, and make sure the cats aren't in here with you. As the heat gun hasn't been touched for years, the rubber casing has become weirdly sticky. This feels horrible to your hands, for reasons that likely won't become clear for another 36 months, which is when you have your autism assesment booked in. In the mean time, wrap a bit of plastic around the heat gun so you can bear to touch it. Mark out the bit of the case that you wish to bend. Apply heat to the offending area making sweeping movements, to ensure that no one place gets heated for too long. Very gently push this part out, then wave the back of the case in the cold air of the open window, to allow the plastic to cool. Click the back of the case onto the body of the deck. Step 5: Test your repair. At this point, the back of the deck is in place and the left trigger is moving freely. If you stop now, you will have successfully fixed the problem. Step 6: Notice that the bit that you pushed out is slightly bulging the other way. It's a minor cosmetic blemish, and doesn't affect how the Deck handles or how the buttons work. Step 7: Decide that this isn't good enough, and that you can push it back slightly the other way. Remove the back of the Stream Deck and apply the heat gun once again, focussing on the area that you want to fix. Do not notice that another part of the case is also taking heat, and has bent slightly. Cool the back of the deck once again, and attempt to refit the back of the case. Step 8: Realise that the back of the case no longer fits. Huh. That's strange. The back of the case no longer fits. Better get the heat gun back on it to sort that out. Step 9: Repeat this process for half an hour until you have to stop what you're doing and attend a work meeting with a difficult colleague. Fizz with anxiety, both because of the looming meeting, and ther fact that every passing second seems to make things worse. Step 10: Finish the meeting, return to the heatgun. You've now got an hour before your next meeting, which is with your boss and which you're stressed about. Spend this time heating the back of the case and gradually making things worse. Step 11: Finish the meeting, return to the heatgun. At this point you've absoutely hosed it beyond repair. The plastic is warped to buggery, and the best you can hope for is getting most of the case to click into place. This takes several hours, it looks like poo poo, and the case won't properly close on the left hand side. Also L4 and L5 now barely work, because apparently you hosed that as well somehow. Dwell on the decisions made in Steps 3 and 6. Step 12: Check IFixIt They sell replacement backs! For twenty five quid! They're out of stock! Step 13: Raise a support ticket with Valve, asking if they will send you a replacement back rather than having to send your Deck away. Nope. Also because you hosed it, the repair will be out of warranty. That'll be £120 to repair at a minimum. Step 14: Say gently caress that, and order a silicone case so you can hold your deck without feeling queasy. Keep refreshing to see if IFixIt have the backs in stock. Resign yourself to eventually paying the £25 as a "you're a loving idiot" fee. Step 15: Reflect on Steps 3 and 6 for several days. Feel a bit sick. Post about it. oh god And that is how to avoid sending your expensive piece of consumer electronics away for a second RMA. I hope this helps someone else in a similar position!

I'm noticing much better performance bumping the VRAM to 4GB. 12GB of general RAM seems like plenty for most of the games that people would run on this thing. Not sure what Valve was thinking making it only 1GB. Since it's an APU you can just bump it up in the UEFI, it's pish easy Errata: RDR2 really doesn't seem to like this, but some games perform better with it. I'll retract my "I would recommend it without a second thought" and just say ymmv. ottergauze fucked around with this message at 15:18 on Dec 12, 2022 |

The deck will absolutely grab more RAM for video if it needs it - the 1gb is just the minimum allocated, but I think it grabs up to...6? 4? if it wants. Changing the minimum means there's less switching when it suddenly needs more, but it can also gently caress with games for some reason - Red Dead 2 runs like dogshit when there's rain, water, or fog on screen with the VRAM minimum bumped up, and it completely goes away when set back to 1gb. Can't explain it.

I’ve noticed improvements in Firewatch, Subnautica and ETS2, none of them particularly demanding (except maybe Firewatch in the context of a handheld). I haven’t actually noticed any performance issues on my end in RDR2 like you mentioned, but i will change back and see, i usually play on a capped 30 and it runs about as stable as I’d expect it to.

I seem to recall some games like older ones not being able to grab more ram for whatever reason. Either way it’s a simple easy change that I’ve left enabled with no issues I can tell so far.

That actually makes sense then, because the performance impact is it dropping down to 30fps with no way of getting it to run better. I run it at 45 locked, myself, which is why I noticed. By the way, the REAL performance improvement for ETS2: Set it to use Proton Experimental in the Compatibility Preferences. The linux native client runs really badly by comparison, but you can get 60fps at near maximum settings with Proton emulating the windows version instead. All you have to do is use the Compatibility menu to tell it to use ANY proton, and it'll do that instead.

I was already on Proton after some pretty nasty visuals glitches popped up in the native version. First only when connected to my TV through the official dock, and then out of nowhere it started happening regardless. I’ll give experimental a shot, thanks for the pointer! Unmaintained or untested “official” linux ports suck vs what proton can do, I’ve had a similar situation with Borderlands 2 (which has an outdated linux version, you need to run through Proton to play with people on Windows). For the sake of prosperity, if anyone's finding this while trying to get Borderlands 2 to work under Proton you need these launch options: code:
