I think Nael’s entry in Encyclopedia Eorzea 1 suggested the social expectation for highborn Garlean women is for them to become medics instead of the more front-facing combat jobs, and the entry there explaining the ranks says that women cannot inherit the imperial throne. So there are some societal ideas about gender roles going on, even if it seems like there aren’t necessarily legal barriers that would prevent women from ending up in the military.

there is a complicated two-step involved in wanting to make your empire a commentary on fascism, but also not wanting to be too fascist about it. though come to think of it, there's surprisingly good representation for men in the "only has this job because of a superior's direct intercession" slot. dear departed Gryn, it's called out that Regulus van Hydra has his job specifically because Emperor Varis likes him, Rhitayn and Nero have their positions courtesy of earning Gaius' favor... the only Garleans we've met who have their jobs thanks to something other than their immediate superiors' whims are Gaius, who went rogue to reforge the 14th in his image, Zenos, who got there through his parentage, and the Emperor himself, who got there by winning a civil war.

turning our eyes over to Eorzea, we see General Raubahn, granted generalship and syndicate membership by virtue of the Sultana deciding she liked this particular gladiator, and Knight-Commander Aymeric de Finitelynotthepope'skid, who wishes to reassure both you and himself at all times that there's no way Daddy's name cleared any obstacles out of his way. there's a lot less pretense to meritocracy in FF14 than there is in other fantasy settings!

Just to clarify, is "Nael died and his sister took up his identity" present in the Japanese version of the game or is it exclusively an English retcon?

I can't remember where exactly this came from, but I recall reading before that it wasn't the plan originally in the Japanese version of the game, it was just something the English script made up to justify the pronoun confusion, but the team overall liked the idea enough to adopt it universally afterwards.

Yeah; he was Nanamo's champion and later bodyguard/friend, and that probably helped some enemies back off (and others pay attention), but he earned his standing.

It's more like he won enough money on the bloodsands to buy the arena and then used that money to get on the Syndicate. No way anyone who actually works for a living gets that rich, even Godbrand owns a casino.

But, wasn't Godbert already rich when the opened the Gold Saucer? I thought he very explicitly became rich purely through supernatural Goldsmithery (and in the ARR Hildy questline, it's also explicitly pointed out that his seat on the Syndicate is still very new)

I mean, yes, you don't open casinos by not being rich.

But there's 'rich' and then there's 'one of the 6 richest people in a city-state whose culture is primarily based on capitalism'.

There is another casino in Ul'dah, called the Platinum Mirage, which is where the Pugilists' Guild is located. It is property of the Mirage Trust, a banking/moneylending organization headed by...the late Teledji Adeledji...

i choose to believe Godbert made a regular people fortune out of his mining concerns, goldsmithing concerns, and being unreasonably good at goldsmithing himself, but it was only once he went illegitimate (via the Saucer) that he became Syndicate rich. presumably thanks to some prior Syndicate member betting it all on the wrong chocobo one too many times.

Godbert has been rich enough to have a seat for a looooong time. But he didn't buy his seat.

Instead, he told them that he was taking a seat, and anyone who disagreed had to face Julyan in single combat.

Meaning it’s now majority State/Sultana-owned. Since the throne seized all of Teledji’s assets.

Nah, the casinos can win entirely fairly as long as they prevent YOU from cheating, just due to how the games are mathematically guaranteed to make the player lose.
(that's why roulette has zeros).

Yeah, you don't need much of a margin to win in the long run. Of course for slots and some other games the margins are so massive that "in the long run" isn't a factor.

Good casinos love a Big Winner.

Statistically, the amount of money the BW takes away is a drop in the bucket for them, and it's great publicity that attracts a few hundred more suckers hopeful winners to try their hand.

Yeah, casinos are notorious for being extremely scrupulous. The game already favors the house, so cheating provides marginal gains (remember, you can't ALWAYS cheat or people will stop playing if they never win) and risks your gaming license, aka a license to basically print money.

I don't even want to see what happens if you gain CHIM outside of a pre-coded system.

It's basically a matter of whether you count a game set up for the house to get a statistical 51+% advantage "cheating" or not
