I met Wahl a number of years ago in Seattle before a CCL game, we chatted for a bit at a bar and he seemed pretty cool.

Al-Saqr posted:why would they assasinate the guy? Because he's been extremely critical of the lead up to and totality of the tournament and they don't like that? I'm with everyone that's said it: I don't think it was an assassination, but the fact that it plausibly could be shows how hosed up everything is.

With the World Cup winding down feels like we should all take a step back and recognize how successful Qatar has been in achieving its goal of making sure not a single person in the world would choose to go there.

The death threats are obviously quite disturbing given the timing of his ultimately passing away, but I would associate death threats more with some lunatic walking up to him in the street and stabbing him, not a sophisticated poisoning designed by a government to silence a vocal critic and not draw any suspicion. But I can well understand where the family is if Grant told them that he was receiving death threats and thought he was in danger and then he dies a week later.

Also, I suspect death threats are less phone calls in the middle of the night or Neil Lennon getting bullets posted to his house, and more random Nigerian twitter accounts posting "I keel all u bumboys, long live our lord and saviour mason greenwood" at you, and those dudes probably aren't putting out hits on people.

State agencies sending anonymous death threats to civil rights activists, their friends, and their families has been modus operandi since 1968. The entire point is to create an environment of stress and paranoia, where even if the activist's will is stubborn, the body never leaves fight or flight response. Their concern for their fellow man is weaponized against them. Furthermore, a benign and functioning country would place emergency defib machines in the hallway outside the press suite of a world-class stadium, in the same way fire extinguishers are inside glass cases on walls in high-traffic areas a where a helpful passerby can take the life saving equipment to the scene to be administered by a trained professional. Wahl's family can wait for the autopsy before creating a civil suit, but this is a workplace death. The state of Qatar is culpable even if it was not an assassination. This is exactly what we were told in the lead up to the tournament during the construction of these ghostly mausoleums: The state of Qatar does not believe a worker's life is worth a $2000 settlement, or a $1000 defibrillator.

I’m sure more will come out in the following days. The Mexican reporter’s tweet posted earlier in the thread suggested that there was a delay in getting medical help to Grant (but also seemed to suggest that he was non responsive from the beginning). The Washington Post’s article indicates that paramedics arrived promptly (even saying “immediately”). Anyways, here’s his desk at Saturday’s event. Looks like they held a minute of silence for him prior to kick-off. https://twitter.com/jadelreda/status/1601639983705907200?s=46&t=yUEEWaJca-Fcc2pT3TU06g

Yeah, nothing short of there being an OR at the stadium would've saved him unfortunately. Pretty much a death sentence...unless you're a member of Judas Priest. And in trying to find any updates regarding Al-Misslam I found that an ITV director died during the group stage
