Last I saw, she was doing voice work for this cool lefty video game. It would be pretty epic if they get her for the sequel too! *monkey paw curls*

oh god oh gently caress posted:Yeah I'm not a brain expert but imo on it's base level it's just a dislike of what's unfamiliar. You didn't grow up with it the way you grow up with other races and (at least my school) learning some very basic anti racist messaging. We were an easy punching bag until fairly recently and lots of people really don't want to adjust their core beliefs around ingroups and outgroups when confronted by it. My parents are both researchers in the field and I grew up with it. Like it was the dinner conversation and trans folk were at our house regularly and it formed a nucleus for their social connection. The thing I can recall is how old and weird many of them seemed to me. Many of the people I grew to know were people who had lived as men for the majority of of their lives and were comfortably upper middle class. Having security to let go of societal expectations is incredibly freeing. But you're not going to pass after going through 60 years of life as a man. The weird part though... maybe there's a Venn overlap of autism and transsexuality, but some of these social get togethers at my parents' house as a kid were like goonmeets. They did blaze the trail however to make it more socially acceptable for younger people to be out and for that I am incredibly proud of them. The younger one can be out and transition, the easier it is to pass and the easier it is to lead in a subculture.

You can't easily identify the people you hate and think are freaks anymore!

It definitely didn’t go straight from medical term to horrific slur, or at least it hasn’t been treated that way for very long in all places. Maybe it was just where I grew up. but I distinctly remember being a sophomore or junior in high school when I first heard the term “r-word,” and thinking it was the corniest thing imaginable. It was certainly meaner than calling something stupid, but I’m positive you could say it in class without a trip to the principal’s office. I don’t think you’d even get a reprimand from the teacher.

I wouldn't say passing is a huge motivator for transphobes. For lovely parents imo it's more that parents build up an image of what their kids are and what they're going to be and they'd much rather have their kid be miserable or dead than violate that. I have a lot of friends whose parents said they were "grieving the death of their child" when they came out. Among the right wing more politically I think it just helps to have a scapegoat to whip up voters and trans kids is the wedge you use to whip up hysteria against trans and queer people more broadly.

Just want to remind people of the facebook groups that post pictures of celebs and say they’re trans by looking at their facial structure. One of these groups had an admin that defended a celeb as not trans so the whole group started analyzing her pictures and decided she was trans. I think that’s my best definition of brain worms, too.

Oh, same here. I guess he does genuinely hate the liberal establishment, as per the MSNBC/DCCC/Village environment, and while that is laudable in many ways, if it delivers you in the Musk/Thiel/antivax/Tucker swamps, you hosed up big time and deserve no sympathy.

No I meant it literally, Taibbi sounded so much like a resistance lib in that book that I couldn't even finish it. I guess he was still feeling out what direction he wanted to take his career, and so took the most lucrative option.

And then there are the hateful moronic chuds, but that's a separate group I think. There is probably some overlap. Since the end of the Obama-era, it does seem that a lot of the queer movement has been seamlessly integrated into the commanding heights of the liberal political establishment, both in the USA, as well as in the broader western sphere. I can see this feeding into a persecution complex. There's a lot of scoffing when rightoids talk about the liberal elite's gender-ideology, but it does seem that certain sections of the ruling class have adopted this weird lukewarm lgbtqia+ bodies and spaces-talk as a kind of civic religion.
