I've noticed the game tends to light up the path forward (overhead lights, street lights, etc).

There are also subtle and not-so-subtle yellow arrows painted into the environment to point you where you're supposed to go.

Edit: Not saying that this will prevent you from getting lost, it still happens to me too. I just thought that was a neat touch once I realized they're there.

Man, even after playing Darktide for dozens of hours, I still feel disoriented on most maps. A lot of the time I just don't know where to go next (fortunately it's usually obvious), I don't really have a mental map in my head, and I only recognize the big setpieces - whereas in Vermintide 2 I know everything like the back of my hand. Is it just me?

I looked it up and apparently they reused each map a couple of times, with the players having to follow different routes depending on the mission type/objective. That would go some way towards explaining the confusion.

Theres a couple of maps where some chunks (like the freight elevator, the long bridge, the deathtrap tower on the sand map) have to be traversed in reverse, which sometimes throws me because Im expecting a setpiece horde until I realize no, we're just passing by this time. The tower in particular, in my experience at least, is a motherfucker. Lots of spawn closets super close to where you drop down, right next to a railing off a 50ft drop, ideal for instant poxwalkers and mutants to ruin everyone's day while dogs and flamers drop in from 3 different elevations. I've had perfectly smooth games just go to poo poo in seconds around that dropdown.

There's often a lot of side paths but in general the way forward follows Video Game Rules in that its lit up more or that all the side corridors eventually merge onto it. You can also just follow the unopened yellow crates :v:.

You typically just get "stuck in" a lot more. It's why i rate the reload on F talent so highly. A lot of the time i'll be thinning out a horde and then get stuck in when they arrive, then when a special shows up i'll hit F and immediately be ready to hit them rather than having to ever reload.

Got swerved on the Crusher being for Zealots instead, but hell, it's fine. Saw a video thumbnail that showed it as a bigass combat baseball bat/Dark Souls-esque greatmace so I'm glad for more potential endgame weapons for the Zealot since the Thunder Hammer isn't doing it for me.

Absolutely not playing that modifier with more dogs though, I loving hate them. Love to fight an enemy where you're not sure if it's behaving alright or being glitchy as gently caress.

But it makes every one on FIRE and dead if they're within 25m. It does suck against the mobs that camp back and peck you with rifles. But thats what psykers/vets are for.

The flamer is easily the top weapon for sweeping an entire cluster of horde/specials. It melts everything that isn't carapace.

Yeah the intended use of the flamethrower imo is "okay I'm primarily melee and can rely on my team to rock snipers and so forth. But when a horde hits or we run into a strong patrol I can mag dump and clear it out by myself while the team does other stuff"

Oh, I'm not complaining about the game's efforts to indicate where you need to go. They're sufficient, and I rarely get lost (following the yellow arrows is indeed a good tip).

I'm just a bit disappointed with myself/the game that individual missions don't really seem to have an outspoken identity to me. They all kind of generically blur together, I have never thought to myself "I hope we get HL-16-37 Assassination next" or anything along those lines. Compare this to Vermintide 2, take Athel Yenlui for example - a very distinct map with its own visual style and aesthetics, experienced players will know exactly what to expect (I suppose this could be considered a negative as well), and it has its fans and detractors. I'm not seeing anything like that from Darktide so far, but I'm willing to give it some time. Game's only been out for two weeks, after all.

The maps and generic events feel like prefabs built for a random Chaos Wastes-style mode, except they forgot to put in the mode. So you just get same-y poo poo maps with no benefit. The single worst part about this game imo.

I feel like I've played a really worrying amount of this game at this point but I feel like I'm getting there with some of the missions. The Disruption in the desert area is the big open hangars with riflemen in every direction, followed by the long corridors, then the relatively easy eye demon infestation, followed by Wipetown (the area where you have to work your way down the shanty roofs), and finally the hack split over two floors.

I think I've got that right?

The main issue is that the names are all gibberish mush. If that map had an actual name, like Dusttown or something, it would be easier to hang a handle on it.

I tried out the Revolver for the Zealot and it's...pretty dire. You only get 5 shots before you have to reload, and reloading is really slow.

Heavy Laspistol, on the other hand, seems decent enough. It does take quite a few shots to down a special.

making the areas generic 40k hab bullshit names makes sense for a partially procedural game, but this isn't that game, so it ends up feeling like generic procgen maps despite not actually being varied

absolutely the worst of all worlds

the whole layout feels like they wanted deep rock galactic, instead we get what feels like an early access release of a VT follow-up

if it wasn't for the absolutely impeccable combat, music, and artistic presentation, the maps, number of missions, number of classes, and incredibly underbaked supporting systems would absolutely torpedo my interest

instead I'm left feeling like this game will be incredible in two years, and it's very fun to play now, it's just, you know, crappy

I actually really like the revolver as its a perfect "oh poo poo a sniper" sort of weapon that I can whip out, dome a specialist and then go back to chopping up poxwalkers with an axe. It's definitely not for everyone but I find it fits the melee centric build of a zealot really well

Huh, most of my solo games with pubs at 4* and 5* have actually been easier than a lower * levels because the players there seem to actually be more on the ball with coherency and target prioritization.

I'm sure this will change, if it hasn't already, but my personal experience has been the opposite so far.

I've got this lasgun. When the refinement system hits, should I bother to try and make this better or is this about as good as it's gonna get? I could see, for example, the ghost blessing being better than the suppression one that it has. Or maybe crit chance instead of crit damage, but that also seems like very marginal stuff.

The next crafting bit is only for the perks, and you have 2 very good perks already so I don't think you should adjust. You could try rolling the 8% specialist damage to try and get ranged crit chance. Then depending on how they deal with blessings (Can you change 1? Can you change 2? Can you change none but upgrade them to their top tiers?) you could go for changing the suppression busting blessing out for something good.
