Related to phone chat, I've bought about a dozen different replacement screens for mobiles from Ali. I'd say about 70% of them seem to have been genuine parts with the rest still being totally functional. Fun little thing to be able to offer to fix someone's phone for half or less then they'd pay at a repair place though it varies pretty heavily by phone as to whether it's worth it.

On the phone repair chat, I took out my screen separator over the weekend and follow the youtube videos step by step and did battery swap of the iPad mini 4. It took about 1+ hours but most of the time was spent on carefully cutting around the glue since this was my first time working on a glued gadget. There are 2 different layer of glues, one glue the screen to the shell, another layer inside glue the battery to the shell. This loving glue is totally a way to gently caress up self repair. There is no loving reason to use so much glue to nail the battery to the back case. Anyway after working on it, I can see if you are experienced, you don't really need a flat screen separator, you can do it with a cheaper heat gun or the weird edge heating thing the iFixit people use. However its super satisfying to replace the dead battery and bring a gadget back to life. It's worth the money I spent on the part and tools. I don't care if I may spend slightly more on them than having somebody fix it in a mall. ---- After I fixed the iPad mini, I tried to replace the Xiaomi mix 2s screen next. But the tear down video show it's so much more complicated. You have to remove all the stuff a tablet doesn't have, fingerprint sensor, earpiece speaker, motherboard..you have to take apart the whole thing. I decided to order a new battery and replace both at the same time. It's definitely like 3x longer operation.

It really is rewarding to save electronics from the scrap heap. I bought a Samsung Tab at a garage sale for $20. It was like new in the box except the previous owner had set it up with a Google Account and enabled Factory Reset Protection so you can't reset it unless you know the password for the original account. So I spent about 2-3 hours looking up how to download and use Samsung internal software tools to flash the ROM and eventually got it up and running. Maybe not the best use of my time but I had fun learning things.

I have one of those tablets at home in a similar predicament but I was never able to bypass the Knox. I did however manage to defeat it on a few phones at work that people turned in with passwords still on them. My old Nokia 1020 (with the giant rear end camera) had a lovely design where you just needed to remove two screws at the top and the entire display assembly just slid out, which was great when I broke the drat screen. They could definitely make phones more repair friendly if they really wanted to, and I almost dont get why they dont with repairs mostly done by third parties rather than the OEM I'd estimate. I guess better off still raking in what they do rather than spite the mall kiosk folks.

I'm guessing they use the pull tab type tape for the battery right? Protip is to pull as straight as possible and if they break, get a small brush, dip it in rubbing alcohol and try to dab it so that it seeps behind the battery. Then use a flat soft plastic spatula to break the seal. There is a specific tool that looks like a plastic butter knife that is great for doing that. And regarding the other phone, it might be possible to get a screen assembly instead of just the screen part, where it includes the other pieces that are fixed to the display.

Ok as for actual repair, a new screen for the S22 Ultra is like $175-$300 direct from Ali jesus christ. I wonder what an actual repair job costs. I might need to survive on 1/3rd of the screen until it gets written off lol.

Yeah I won't be buying any new/used phone with fingerprint sensor on the screen. Ridiculous expensive to replace. And it's not actually better than fingerprint sensor on the power button or on the back.

Anyway last time when ordering the thermal camera I missed out on quite a lot of savings by using normal Ali coupons. With the $6 and store coupons I can get that phone for $60. Maybe these would be useful for someone making a larger purchase: Christmas December coupons valid until 10.12.2022: $6 off your $50+ purchase – BRADNC5 $12 off your $100+ purchase – BRANDC12 $18 off your $150+ purchase – BRANDC18 $24 off your $200+ purchase – BRANDC24 $36 off your $300+ purchase – BRANDC36 December coupons valid 1.1.2023/XNUMX/XNUMX: $5 off your $10+ purchase – CHOICE - The coupon is valid for CHOISE products $3 off your $25+ purchase – 12UP3 – The coupon is valid for these products $6 off your $50+ purchase – 12DEC6 $9 off your $80+ purchase – 12DEC9 $14 off your $140+ purchase – 12DEC14 $24 off your $200+ purchase – 12DEC24

I got two beautiful turquoise bracelets from this store that came really exquisitely packaged for gift-giving. If you're looking for a nice semi-precious piece of jewelry, I can heartily recommend them on the strength of their packaging alone. (And it was wasted on me, since I bought both bracelets for myself.)

Since people liked keyboard chat last time, I found a set of keycaps that actually had the right stuff for my old Logitech keyboard. Gave it a bit of a cleaning and tossed these on. Keycaps - Ghost Judges Apollo Got them for 34 as part of the Black Friday stuff. Really tough finding keycaps with the 1U Win/menu keys and the 6.5U spacebar. Might be useful if someone has an old Corsair K70 or something. Echophonic fucked around with this message at 01:47 on Dec 14, 2022 |

Just got a highly rated Apple Pencil copy/imitator in. It’s going with an iPad for my Youngest so I won’t get to test it out until Christmas. $10 and shipped fairly fast about 10-11 days

I don't have any brands in mind if that's what you are asking but if you are asking about tip shapes then a medium and a small of bevel tip and chisel tip are all I have ever needed if that helps. Those integrated tips work great it's just a shame that you can't buy a big variety pack to see what you like without having to fork out a couple of hundred bucks.

It came in a pretty big box with a pouch and USB-C cable, and the macro lens was in a separate box. A plate of rotelle with cold sauce from the fridge Building on the other side of the street, maybe 30m away Same street, below The lens is fixed focus with hyperfocal distance maybe 50cm (guessing, didn't measure), so anything much closer gets uselessly blurry. Here's a PCB of a cheapo electronic load: Same with the macro lens (the big mosfet from the first shot is in the top right corner), you can clearly see the really tiny SMD components and even traces, something is clearly too hot here: https://i.imgur.com/i7AZaQu.mp4 (Check out the person and dog at the beginning, the recently parked cars, and the apartment on the opposite side that has an open window and is venting a ton of heat into the atmosphere) The app is a bit wonky and sometimes won't immediately recognize the camera, or won't rotate the image (like that video for example). You can lock the scale to keep the colors consistent, but actually manually entering the range doesn't seem to work. There are a bunch of different color schemes you can choose. Mostly it's fine though imo. There's a basic mode which shows you the center point and min/max spots. In "pro" mode you can choose your own points to measure or even draw lines or rectangles where it will calculate separate min/max/avg values for each. It lets you adjust the emissivity, ambient temperature and distance to the object, all of which affect measured temperatures. You can also just use it with your PC, it's recognized as a camera, but you'd need some software to actually do any measurements. I'm pretty happy. The resolution is easily good enough that I never was like "uhh I wish it was higher", though obviously more is better. You also don't need the visible-spectrum camera like the FlirOne has since there's enough definition to tell what's what. The macro lens works perfectly. There's an extended range mode that goes to like 500C in case you're on fire. If you want to spend a bit more then the T2S is supposedly better as it uses a bigger sensor and has an adjustable focus lens: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003686685913.html Trimson Grondag 3 posted:I'd be keen on a review at some point, we are fixing up an old house and this would be handy. quote:... mobby_6kl fucked around with this message at 23:21 on Dec 14, 2022 |

What is the resolution? Does it have the 9Hz limit imposed by the US export laws (I could swear I saw you mention this but can't see it now)? I have a Flir E4 hacked into an E8 (that entire line used the same physical hardware and just changed the resolution in software, so all of them could be changed to 320x240 by swapping out a DLL and changing some registry entries). Still only 9Hz though, and it can't record video (but in the engineering menu you can change it from USB mass storage to USB video webcam and save video with an external host that way). I do like that the E4 is standalone (e.g. won't become useless like that FLIR iPhone one I had originally) but I'd buy one if it had amazing specs.

But it does do 24fps, which is pretty smooth. Obviously can record video too, and it's recognized as a USB camera so I think it's pretty safe in the long term since that'll work with anything. I'm too lazy to make my own video review but you can see it in action here as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMQeXq1ujn0 There's also a stand-alone version of the same sensor, if you prefer that, I'm not 100% sure now but I think it's the 260B: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002996798759.html I can see it being more convenient as something you can just grab and it always works but for my purposes I'm happy with a tiny accessory I can just hook up to a phone or computer.
