I would imagine that someone would accidently get their vitamin C (or whatever it was the prevents scurvy) via drinks or accidently eating fruits/veg at some point in life. My dude, I got scurvy when I graduated straight into the post-9/11 job market and couldn't find work for two years. I got scurvy because i literally couldn't afford to pay rent and eat at the same time when scraping by on odd jobs and getting paid under the table. I could afford ramen packets. Literally just ramen packets. That was my life. No one was giving me any loving juice boxes for free. Roommates? Sure, I had 4-5 roommates (the number varied) in a 2BR apartment. And this was Seattle in 2001, not New York! And why wasn't I able to find a job? Surely I had no skills, right? loving bzzt, wrong. I originally had a FTE job offer from F5 Networks waiting for me when I graduated, working as a software engineer, after interning there as an undergrad! ...But that offer was retracted in February 2001, four months before my graduation, due to the product I worked on (EDGE-FX, a web content caching device) getting shitcanned. (The rest of the team got laid off.) The dotcom bubble bursting, followed immediately by 9/11, absolutely destroyed the job prospects of people who happened to graduate that year. My whole career suffered as a result. Kesper North fucked around with this message at 23:31 on Dec 16, 2022 |

Arrath posted:Seriously the insidious spread of online/from the phone gambling is going to ruin a lot of people. Oh for sure it’s so so bad. It’s been common in the UK for a long time and you see articles like this about how they microtarget their marketing to ruin lives: quote:Gambling killed my husband. We must stop this predatory industry claiming more lives quote:This time last year, my husband Luke and I had everything we wanted: each other, a lovely house and two wonderful children. Three months later, this life was shattered. On 22 April 2021, Luke took his own life. quote:But in 2020, Luke was furloughed because of the pandemic. He began gambling again in secret, reopening his old accounts. I remember him often commenting on how relentless the marketing emails he was getting were; he was concerned about the impact they would have on people who were already struggling with money… quote:They track their habits and patterns and vulnerabilities online to find out when best to advertise to them and what kind of emails they are most likely to open. They could, if they wanted to, use this information to help people, to block their accounts; but often they use it to drag them further into addiction. When people like my husband try not to gamble, they are targeted more aggressively. One gambler who got his data back from an online gambling company and shared it with the New York Times found that as someone who had given up gambling, he had been profiled as a customer to “win back”. https://amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/jan/18/gambling-killed-husband-predatory-industry-free-bets-marketing-banned

I have to say I don’t quite understand how people get addicted to gambling but I understand enough to know that it seems like, short of heroin addiction, it’s the quickest way to get to “so you’ve ruined your life” status.

you can get there WAY FASTER with gambling than heroin. heroin you have to build up a tolerance and habit, but gambling you can YOLO the life savings in, like, a week. you try to go big you go to the morgue with heroin. anyway both are not good, namaste

The gambling industry is one of a variety of openly predatory industries that just need to be nuked from orbit, targeting the purveyors rather than further victimizing the sad saps in their thrall. Same goes for payday loans and the plethora varieties of pseudoscience.
