Unfortunately iTunes for Windows is stuck in some weird twilight zone where it's sorta still being supported because it's the only way to do certain things, but they don't seem to want to replace it or actually put effort into it.

Yea it’s so incredibly Janky. Super slow and unresponsive, sometimes it freezes and does nothing for a while, constantly has issues. And the interface became incredibly convoluted - Apple at least recognised this when they replaced it with several apps in MacOS.

the metal side projects - the dlss equivalent and the torch training acceleration etc. are kinda depressing to me in a different universe, we'd have gaming and machine learning support competitive with PCs

I really need to upgrade the ram in my 2018 Mac Mini in the new year. I’ve done ram/ssd on my 2012 Mini before but I know the 2018 is more involved and need to take the system try out etc. I’ve skimmed the ifixit guide, but what’s it like to do in the real world… a pain in the rear end that might have me frying something or straightforward enough with time and patience?

At this point you should probably be buying an m1 mini rather than spending more money on a dead platform. Unless you absolutely need intel for something you’re doing.

The M1 machine was announced like a week after my return window was closed. I also bought a new Intel laptop around the same time. Was so mad. So alas it’s not that old and doing the needed ram upgrade is gonna be a good chunk less than switching to another new machine.

It’s not that bad. The biggest thing is keeping the screws in order and being careful to follow each step precisely. A nice well lit place to work is key too.

The M1 is great, but if his current machine is doing what he needs, and just needs more RAM, then paying $100 or so to increase it is a much better recommendation than “Sell the machine and spend several hundred for an M1 that may only be marginally faster at the specific tasks.” That recommendation mindset is why we have the e-Waste problem we do.

Until I bought the 2018 one in 2020 (which they kinda pretended was a refresh but wasn’t) I was running my 2012 one fine but was having major stability issues that turned out to be bad RAM, so I took it as an excuse to upgrade. Got the 2012 running again and it’s FireWire connectivity means it’s a nice little SD edit workstation now.

Decent quality modern monitors will have USB-C input. This is the preferred method of of connecting a laptop since one cable charges the laptop, provides both the video signal and data to any usb ports on the monitor. It also supports higher resolutions/framerates than the HDMI port. HDMI should be your last choice, not first.

Also if you use a thunderbolt hub you can plug 2 monitors over a single cable to your laptop. Using 2 monitors with a 100w thunderbolt 4 hub over a 3 meter thunderbolt cable is the most baller setup.

The ifixit guide has a video, watch it for a better idea of how it all lines up with what you feel comfortable doing. I watched the disassembly; the most delicate thing looks like the LED cable but even it didn't look super hard. I advise getting the prying tools they show in the video to help open the bottom, lever cables out of sockets, and so on. You can try to do repairs or upgrades on Apple equipment without them, but it's a lot easier with the right tools.

Okay, so hopefully this question won't start a fight this time, but does anyone have any recommendations on mac supported mechanical keyboards (brown switches preferred) or mice? Most of the functions work on the the ones I am using currently, but just little features that I am missing that make using what I previously used on windows annoying now. For example I can no longer hold down the middle scroll wheel to drag a document back to the top, I have to scroll manually now. Also the function keys on my keyboard don't work and every time I restart the OS asks me to identify my keyboard. Just looking for something that works out of the box I'm guessing.

There's an option in macOS's keyboard settings to remap ctrl/win/alt keys to ctrl/alt/cmd, so if you're not particularly picky about having Mac-specific keys on your keyboard, you can use basically any keyboard that meets your needs.

On keyboards, this recent article in Ars caught my eye: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/12/oneplus-first-mechanical-keyboard-will-have-a-mac-layout-open-source-software/ there aren’t that many Mac layout mechanical keyboards out there. I have to say though, as someone who always used mechanical keyboards when I had a PC, have you tried the Magic Keyboard? I switched to it when I bought my Mac and haven’t had any thoughts of going back, I really like it.

My Keychron K2 has been pretty good. It’s nice and clacky. There’s a little switch to go between Windows and macOS, which you have to use if you want the media keys to work in Windows. It’s got multiple Bluetooth connections and a USB port, and really it hasn’t been any trouble over the last year or so going through all the permutations of ways it can connect.
