No, he's banned some prominent folks who disagreed with him. So far it's not going his way, although it's close.

Yeah he's definitely tilted the site more towards himself but it's still like ...

speaking as an artist who only has a career because of networking and marketing opportunities I got via Twitter, there are a LOT of people who are going to stick around until this thing hits the ocean floor, to get as much value out of it as we can. Banning a number of high profile critics =/= banning everybody who hates him and wants the site back.

He loses the poll, has another meltdown and perma's every person who voted Yes in a fit of rage because put his future at the company he paid $44 billion dollars for up to an online poll and the poll corncobbed him.

He pairs this with the world cup finale to claim the highest engagement day in Twitter history.

After he takes off (likely already having agreed to do so with Tesla stakeholders), he uses the day as a benchmark to declare the next few CEOs utter failures. Given the glass cliff tradition, odds are *spins wheel* Condoleezza Rice or Laura Loomer will be the next chief executive

About 2 million people have voted. I was shocked to discover that there are around 300 million twitter accounts that have been active once in the last month. Even with bots, I’d have guessed it would be more like 10% of that figure.

Yeah, it would be sad if he installs some boring competent guy who keeps the company chugging and just retires to shitpost and lose a little money every year. He has accomplished what he set out to do, which was ban anyone making fun of him and let trump come back. He should have to sweat it out and gently caress up until the site dies.

Is it possible for Elon to just shut Twitter down forever as part of some kind of tax thing like how streaming services take down shows and make them impossible to get through any kind of marketplace?

I hope that photo came about because Kushner invited Elon up to his private box, waited in the dark for Musk to walk in, and then had someone shut and lock the door behind him and turn the lights on to reveal the entire Saudi Royal Family sitting there waiting for him going :toughguy: and Musk instantly turned into a puddle of piss.

I don't see how. He can shut down Twitter whenever he wants, but there's no way he'd recoup the billions of dollars he spent on it. At most, he could sell it to someone else, but nobody's going to pay the same amount he did. And even if they did, that wouldn't restore Tesla's stock price (which is where the bulk of his wealth is).

evilweasel
Aug 24, 2002

shutting down twitter instantly bankrupts it and is probably some sort of fiduciary duty violation entitling the bondholders to sue him, as well as the minority investors

also just remember that elon spent $44b on twitter because he's addicted to it and ever since he bought it all of twitter has been relentlessly trolling him

its like if your favorite toy took all your money and then spent all its time following you around yelling about how it hosed your mother

FlamingLiberal

At best he'll sell it at some kind of loss, but yeah I don't think that there's a good exit from this

Remember that he attempted to sue to get out of having to buy the company and was clearly going to lose, so he ended up essentially buying it under protest

I want to say that to someone like Musk, $44 billion is pittance because he still has multiple hundreds of billions of dollar, but buying Twitter and the unending Just Post Through It shitstorm he's been at the center of for a solid month have caused him to fall back behind Jeff Bezos to only being the second richest man on the planet, and that fact alone will stick in his brain like a splinter for the rest of his life, because it's not about the money, it's about Elon's feelings and those are fragiler than a sheet of glass 1 nanometer thick.
