On the planet of Sheliak a the football season is disrupted by war. Soon it becomes clear only one person - nay - one team can hope to save the planet from an outerworld invader. Can the comissioner Jimmy "Straight Jim" Lorne unite a team of misfit superstars to play for the ultimate price? *cue training montage*

I think Decision at Thunder Rift or other early story done in a retro sci-fi "raygun gothic" style would at least be an interesting experiment. Before BattleTech settled on its current style, I feel like it borrowed a lot from more fantastical sci-fi art and style and a return to that would contrast against the current trend of gritty realistic stuff. Otherwise, I think that inviting comparisons like "The Expanse but with giant robots" would be something tough to live up to.

I know exactly how I'd do the trailer to hook in normies to sell the sense of scale. A large-scale sci-fi firefight between entrenched forces. Massed infantry, a couple tanks. ne side is starting to get overrun. THEN you start to hear the STOMP STOMP STOMP and the puddles of blood-tinged rainwater start to get disturbed ala the iconic Jurassic park scene before we see 'em. Then a powers of ten shot zooming out and the ground pounders we were following get lost in the chaos of a couple lances mixing it up.

The best thing Peter Jackson did with the Lord of the Rings is opening Fellowship with the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. You're making a promise to the audience that this is a world where cool as poo poo battles happen and if you're patient, you'll get more of this after we establish the conflict and stakes.

You open with a montage of humanity traveling to space, exploration of the stars, and the formation of the Star League leading to mankind's golden age. Then the narrator says that good things never last and war is the natural state of mankind. Cut to a Terminator style shot of a giant mech foot crushing a pile of skulls and bones before it exchanges fire with another mech and then it zooms out even further and you see that this is just one exchange among hundreds happening in a massive mech melee. Fade to whole cities burning before doing a hard cut to someone in a mechbay tinkering on what might be one of the mechs we just saw, but in a state of complete disrepair. Caption: 400 years later (or whatever). Then you go into whatever narrative you're going to do. I like cribbing from "The Mandalorian" in that you have a lone mech pilot traveling from place to place with his bucket of bolts, earning just enough to keep it operational and slowly collecting allies. It gives you a good way to learn about the universe and learn about each faction on its own terms.

Frankly, you could do a hell of a lot worse than using the plot for MechWarrior 1 as the season long arc going on in the background of most episodes. The pilot is trying to reclaim his birthright before he runs out of time and he needs a hell of a team of mercs at his side to reclaim his ancestral home. Set it in 3025~ and then season 2, either the protagonist now has to deal with a conflict that is revealed to be the start of the Clan Invasion, or he's an old hat and passes the torch to the next protag who has to do the same.

Yeah but no one wants a TV show where most of the action is blowing up stationary towers, walking into a mech ambush, save scumming because now you know where the mechs are, and repeat.

I wasn’t suggesting that the show mimic the game, just saying that that approach to introducing a world and hooking viewers into it was done well for the game almost just as you described.

That last one even has its own techspecs, and has a Null Signiture System so you can be Urbanmech Batman.

As much as it pains me to say it, a TV series about a company of mercs in 3025, just going from contract to contract, while the universe gets gradually unveiled would be the most successful approach. Plenty of opportunity for character conflict and growth, you could juxtapose between big events and small ones (Depending on the contract), easily could introduce major fiction characters the mercs get to meet.

For a movie, I like the idea of that lone merc with the ancient mech in the Periphery. Better, and much more compact for a movie than the above idea.

New Shrapnel seems to be out. Usually when a new issue comes out the Shrapnel submission moves a bit, but so far nothing. Wonder how many years it will take to get a submission reviewed at this rate.

Also, another Clan Jade Falcon story. Geez Loiuse, it was one thing when the Falcons were still a major faction in-universe, but now they've been reduced to what, 3-4 clusters max? Sill getting more page time than other actually larger factions like the Clan Protectorate, House Marik, or Feds Suns. Is Clan Jade Falcon really that popular to justify all these pages?

2. Back home there is a new threat! Pirates/rebels/mercs harass our hero's homeland.
3. Hero can't bring themselves to fight again, or the local militia arrogantly refuse their help.
4. Second battle. Militia sally forth but are outmatched and suffer a serious defeat.
5. Can our hero overcome their reluctance and trauma to win the day? Yes.
6. Final battle ends in triumph, or bittersweet victory, or whatever.

Clan Jade Falcon gets top billing because they're the Designated Enemy to the other Spotlight Stealing Clan, Clan Wolf.

No seriously, that's what it's mainly about. CJF is the Big Name Heel to Wolf's Face, so any time Wolf gets shown prominently (which is a LOT), the writers feel the need to give CJF screen time as well, even though by 3151 it has largely ceased to exist except as a glorified bodyguard unit and a hand full of remnants trying desperately to hold on to what little is left.

What's especially dumb about the constant CJF stuff in the wake of the ilClan trial is that its unnecessary now, as they set up Hell's Horses to be Wolf's foil now after their Khan told Alaric to go sit on an inferno round and spin.

The modern (3151+) Falcons are no longer the foil to the Wolves at all, they're an exploration of what happens when a Clan loses in a way that effectively destroys their existing purpose, and the people left behind have to figure out how to fill that void.

The Falcon Remant loving rules because it's about 50 Jade Falcon Warriors sitting on Sudeten turning out 50+ Mechs a month and having to figure out how to keep existing when suddenly their most precious and limited resource is the lives of their pilots. :allears:

So my too clever for her own good daughter upon getting the rundown in preparation for a game over winter break observed essentially that with the basic game being mech on mech you don't get a real sense of the scale and I don't super disagree. Is there a good simple scenario to incorporate a squad or two of infantry maybe a light vehicle to give her that stomp factor? Around the turn of the century I got into the clicky game, and for all its flaws, one of the things I liked was how it with relative simplicity did a combined arms thing where 1-2 battlemechs were supporting several vehicles and infantry squads and doing things they simply could not do, better to give you that sense.

There must be a hundred HBS missions escort Marines to the thing but just getting back in and introducing her I want to make sure it's snappy and gives her that scale she seems to want to experience.

Just play clickytech if you've got the stuff for it. Simpler rules for kids and way quicker. And yeah, the combined arms portion of it was always cool.

With very few exceptions Infantry are low HP, low-damage tar pits in Alpha Strike. Without transports they've also usually got very low MV.

I find they're best reserved for missions where you need to capture something or stop an enemy from capturing something.

Yeah, that's probably their best use. Speed them to an objective and drop them off somewhere that it's a right pain in the rear end to dig out, so the enemy can't capture it. They'll either be forced to waste valuable turns and firepower dealing with your groundpounders, or leave the objective contested in favor of more substanial targets.
